I am a 25 year old man in good health. Since last month my urinary frequency started to increase. Before, I was urinating every 5 hours but know every 2 hours. Also, I noticed a tender, irritated feeling in my urethra. I should probably visit my doctor, but before that I would like to know more about the causes of irritation?

Yes, you are right; you should visit your doctor. Irritation or inflammation of urethra is called urethritis. Urethra is the tube that empties urine from the bladder and in man it extends the full length of a penis. Very often, irritated urethra or urethritis is a result of sexually transmitted diseases. Chlamydia and gonorrhea are the two most common cuases of urethritis among STD’s. At times, urethritis can be an irritation caused by rubbing or pressure on the groin area. Tight clothing can also cause urethritis, and it can also be caused from different irritants like soap, powder or spermicides. If symptoms are caused by the infection, they should stop within a few days of your antibiotic therapy.
