My daughter just had her 2nd reaction to Dextromethorphan today. The first time was when given Mucinex DM, and then today when given Generic Dayquil. After today's reaction and trip to urgent care, we figured out the common ingrediant was Dextromethorphan. Her symptoms were uncontrollable teeth chattering, unable to open her jaw wide, extreme uneaze, skin crawling, heach ache, nausia, hot/cold, and basically freaking out from not knowing what was happening to her. In urgent care, they gave her a dose of Benadryl (just regular over the counter) and it helped with in 5 min to stop her teeth chattering and help her calm down. She felt not great the rest of the day, but the scary part was over for her.

Used it for the last time this week. I get very dizzy, mental fog, can't sleep and anxiety. Nasty stuff.

Have had a ver similar reaction to other on here. Really frightening and what's worse is it is taking ages to go. The worse reaction lasted 4-5 hours but I felt very anxious and shakey with racing pulse and pupil dilation for 48 hours afterwards. Nearly 72 hours later and I can still feel the effects of it in my system.
Has anyone else had a similar experience and if so how long did it take to subside completely?
Thanks

yeah i have had an allergic reaction as well to NyQuil twice and it resulted in my eyes and my face puffing up and just recently i have been getting cotton mouth. Then i would take an antihistamine and it still take me 3 days for my face to go back to normal.
I dont understand about why my body is reacting this way because i took it a lot of growing up and i am not supposed to be allergic to anything, so idk why my body is reacting this way

I have had a reaction to most cold reledies that is very extreme. Last was with NeoCitran Total.
My hands start to tingle and it feel as though I have a rash then the skin dies and my hands peal like an onion and I have a hard red skin for several weeks which cracks when ever I try to bend my fingers. Very painful.

It happened to me also. I have always take Nyquil all the time but recently i took it and about 20 mins later i my palms started to itch and get red and my face started to get red. I took Benadryl and that helped. I thought i got bitten by something but then after about 3 weeks i took it again because i felt a cold coming and after 30 mins it started again. So i guess im now allergic to it but not sure what ingredient is that makes me like that. Everyone tells me its because im getting older and my body is changing. Now i keep Benadryl around.

Came down with a doozy cold with chest and sinus congestion. Thought I would try a trusted brand of OTC bottled medicine. Took it at 10pm, was still highly alert by 3:30 am. It was not one of the non-drowzy formulations. Reaction to the decongestion part has warned me off trying that again!! Heart rate was extremely elevated, needed to make many trips to the loo, all signs of it's affect on me.

Yes I have very horrible reactions to dextromethorphan and to chlorpheniramine maleate, which are both very common in OTC cough syrups. I nearly died twice because of my bad reactions: first to the chlorpheniramine then to the dex. What happens to me is that I start feeling drowsy till I feel dizzy. After that, I have double-vision, then my muscles jerk and twitch like I'm being electrocuted, and I lose complete control of my body till I am just like a vegetable. I am able to think but I can't talk or move and I am barely breathing. The two times this has happened, it takes place over 8-10 hours. Then, I start coming back and for days afterwards, I am weak. The first time it happened, my mom called the doctor and a nurse told her to let the drug run its course through my body. I did not overdose, I actually took much less than the prescribed amount, both times. Because I cannot run the risk of having a third reaction, I usually get the flu vaccine. When I get a cold, I either let it run its course or I take homeopathic medicines, which happen to work quite well for me.

I know this post is somewhat dated, but I am still compelled to reply. I have just recently figured out that I am highly allergic to DM. When I take it (usually accidently), I get a severe rash on my hands. The rash is so intensely hot that it burns my skin and causes the skin to blister. The same on my lips, and the roof of my mouth. It is a horrible experience. I also used to get the rash in my eyes and it would blind me for 2-3 days. I have recently figured out that when I feel an episode coming on, if I can get on steroids within a couple of hours (Methlyprednisolone) I can get ahead of the rash in the eyes, but will still get it on my hands. I wish there was more warnings and research on this medicine. I think it effects more people than anyone realizes.

My wife has this same issue and has had about four reactions exactly as you have described. Have you come up with an effective treatment for hay fever, congestion etc?

I am allergic to DXM also because I take Azilect for Parkinson's and I get some wicked coughs and I do not know how to get them to stop. The Dr. gives me a little pill it doesn't work. So as of late I know not what I must do except deal with it. DXM is on my list so I do not even dare try it already tried 2 things on my list. Don't ask how it worked for me it didn't, my blood pressure blew off the charts due to the tyramine allergy that goes with the pill I take.

My first allergic reaction was when I was six years old, and I still have found nothing to take when I get sick. When I was four I had Pneumonia and almost died, leaving me with severe scarring to my lungs. I have the flu at the moment :( and within a few days it will develop into bronchitis (everything turns into bronchitis). I took a prescription medication about 5 years ago for bronchitis witch had Dextromethorphan and Guiefinisin in EXTREMELY high doses (I didn't bother reading the ingredients because my allergies were on file) which resulted in severe hives all over my body and swelling of my tongue and throat. My doctors have given up and just started giving me codeine and it makes me so dizzy I can barely function.
