This same reaction happens to me. The body rash will turn to blisters and fever. Very painful. The skin specialist calls it eurthyma multiform.

Yes! I had the same problem. It took a while to figure out what it was- even my dermatologist had no idea why I was getting hives even after they took a skin biopsy. I figured it out after I took a dose of alka seltzer cold and immediately broke out with hives all over my legs, arms, neck and face.

I would agree. I have more of a sensitivity too, it makes me feel nuts and wiggly and crawly and wired. It SUCKS! I wish there were cold medications without it in Canada, but I can't find any...

I recently came down with a cough so I took the 12 hour relief Delsym... Less than and hour later I could barely stand up without getting the feeling that I was going to pass out... I was at school at the time and I couldn't even think. It was very scary... I was constantly texting my mom about it and we looked up the symptoms of DM allergies and I related to each one... Definitely a very scary day for me!!!

I didn't even know people take this to get high. I took it once in mucinex, and it worked really well so when i was dealing with a nasty cold, i tried it again. BIG MISTAKE! Within minutes i felt like someone drugged me, i couldn't think and had to stop at a friend's house on my way home because i could no longer see clearly to drive. By this time i needed help out of the car to walk and could only try to look through one eye to try and see clearly, if i opened both, everything was spinning! For the next 8 hours or so until it worked it's way out of my system, i had heart palpitations that felt like a fish flopping around in my chest, facial swelling, the spins like i wouldn't wish on anyone, and misc other symptoms. Should've gone to the hospital, but waited it out with someone else's help. Horrible experience!
Unfortunately it's in all the cold flu- cough and cold items, so i have to tell the pharmacist my symptoms and allergy and they tell me what combination of things to get instead.

I have the same problem as some of the other posters and will break out in hives, but with the last episode I also started having some breathing problems which was a scary experience.... In any event, I found buckley's has a cough/cold/flue syrup which is DM free, and I can't tell you how great it's been to be able to take cough medicine again.

Yes, I am also allergic to dextromethorphan. It makes my lips and throat swell. Luckily it did not get bad enough that I had to go to the hospital. Unfortunately, I can't find any cough medicine that doesn't contain that, so I'm not sure what to do when I get a bad cough.

Yes, my reaction was delayed though. I took it and went to bed, woke up a few hours later with very fast beating heart and simultaneous violent vomiting and diarrhoea (sorry). It felt like my body was just like "get this stuff out!" Never have been tested and never taken it again, but am pretty sure it was this.

I believe I had a reaction to a cough syrup with Dextromethoraphan. 10 or 15 minutes after I took it I noticed I wasn't coughing anymore which was the affect I was after, but the uncomfortable side effect was my lungs felt like they couldn't expand. I thought possibly it was my imagination so the next day I took half a dose and the same thing happened. Does anyone know of a cough syrup with DM?

I'm sooo glad to know you are the only one who I've found to offer an alternative vs. a reaction to the question I had. I will try the buckley's and since it appears to be more natural I feel optimistic in taking this product.
Thanks alot!

I am the same! When i take this medication i feel like i am drunk or just tripping out. Don't know if i am just hypersensitive to it, but i my pupis dilate (HUGE), hard time focusing vision (kind of fuzzy), fast heart beat, and just feel loopy- which leads to me giggling and feeling like I am on drugs. This happens even with a half dosage, but i have found this is one of the only medications that gets rid of my bad coughs- so i only take it when absolutely needed, because i do not feel like those side effects are normal.

I am as well. I had, unbeknownst to me, the beginning of glandular fever when I took it for the accompanying sore throat. I experienced instantaneous swelling. Someone mentioned opiates in another comment and I can't take codeine or morphine related drugs. Not swelling with those but dizziness accompanied by nausea on very tiny doses. Can't take pseudoephedrine, as it seems to affect my kidneys; my hands looked like balloons. Two of the more recent over the counter antihistamines cause extreme despair in a couple of days at child doses, Benedryl affects my vision, and other antihistamines tend to ramp me up and disturb my sleep. Allergic to aspirin and can't take Tylenol or ibuprofen.

I don't take any OTC drugs save for cough expectorants that only have quaifensin.

I don't take any over the counter meds (I'm sensitive to or allergic to all I've tried) save expectorants that only have quaifensin. Mucinex tablets are supposed to be quaifensin, but they make me feel really strange. (I bought them thinking I could bypass the sweetners and the like in the liquid expectorants.)
