Hello, folks. My brother in law was diagnosed with furunculosa otitis externa. I have read somewhere that this condition often happens to diabetics. I wonder whether this is true or not. I would like to know something more, so I hope someone here could help me with this. Thanks in advance.

Hello. Furunculosis in general represents a deeper infection of hair follicle. It is mostly caused by Staphylococcus aureus. Multiple furuncles are known as carbuncles. One of the reasons can be diabetes mellitus. It is valid also for furunculosa otitis externa. In another words, this is furunculosis in the outer ear. There are other reasons for furunculosis as well, so your brother in law should examine this more thoroughly, especially if this appears frequently with him. I hope everything will be all right. Good luck to him!
