I am a 26 yr old woman, recently diagnosed w/ADD, and I have been taking Adderall XR for almost 8 months now. Adderall, while helpful w/concentration, organization, and other areas of focus, has taken a tremendous toll on my body otherwise. In response to previous entries inquiring about the weight-loss effect of Adderall, yes, it has caused me to lose weight, which almost any girl would welcome -- but by significantly reducing my appetite, almost to the point of completely eliminating it, and I now have difficulty eating w/o feeling sick. At this point, it appears as though my body has gone into some degree of "starvation mode," affecting my bone density and the way my body absorbs nutrients, even though I still have a reasonable amount of fat on my body. The effects these eating habits and other side effects of the medication have cost my overall health have caused me to reconsider whether it's worth it anymore, even though the medication does improve my concentration considerably.
I may be a rare case, but over 90% of the listed potential side effects, including the ones that say "contact your medical provider immediately if...," have affected me from the first time I ever took the pill, many still affecting me today. Within the first week of taking Adderall I ended up in the ER severely dehydrated, hooked up to an IV administering sedatives to counter the Adderall. I was unable to breathe, my heart was racing, and I hadn't eaten or slept in days. Since modifying the dosages, I don't usually have too much difficulty breathing, if I keep myself extra hydrated, but my resting heart rate remains around 120 bpm (b/4 Adderall: 75-80 bpm). Although I try to exercise, which should help lower my resting heart rate overall, my doctor recently warned me about modifying my workout because even 10-15 min into a 30 min DVD my heart rate is off the charts. Additionally, I regularly get little to no sleep, I have headaches and stomach aches every day, dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, excessive sweating/hot skin, mood swings, bipolar tendancies (never had that b/4, and I was evaluated by a psychologist when I was diagnosed w/ADD), constipation, uncontrolled muscle movements, personality changes including becoming hyper-focused/task oriented to the point of anti-social behavior (I am probably one of the most extroverted people I know, so that's kind of a biggie), and extreme emotional responses or total apathy -- to name a few other side effects. Since starting the meds back in December, I have also developed several other medical conditions including hair loss, hyperthyroidism, and osteopenia (although osteoperosis does run in my family, my current levels are where they would be if I were in my 50s or 60s w/a history of osteoperosis).
It may seem enticing to just take a pill once a day that will automatically help you curb impulses to eat and help get that last 10, 15, 20 lbs off, but, in my opinion, it's just not worth it -- and it's not something you can control. Sure, I liked losing the weight at first. Going down pant size after pant size seemed great for awhile. I could have easily afforded to lose maybe 30lbs before I started taking Adderall, even though, at the time, I was satisfied w/my weight. At my most recent "Adderall checkup," my doctor, who for years has told me I needed to work out and eat better (so I can lose my excess weight) is now monitoring me b/c he's concerned that I'm losing as much weight as I am on such a regular basis -- especially b/c I'm not doing anything intentional to do so. I started monitoring exactly how much I was eating and how much weight I was losing... Even after being intentional about eating regularly, I kept losing weight -- sometimes up to a pound a day. Maybe it sounds great, but for me it was scary. When your body rejects food, something it was created to consume, something is terribly out of order. (The irony: I still have flab! Unfortunately, the rest of my body is fighting so hard to do what it was created to do that it's suffering immensely.)
I know all this is probably TMI to the max, but it just kills me to hear that other women think Adderall is the solution to their weight loss issues! Believe me, I thought it was worth it, too, especially b/c I was taking it for ADD, so it was justifyable. Now, I'm doing everything I can to get off of it and find other alternatives to my struggles w/focus. Diet and exercise take a lot longer, but they prepare you for a long-lasting lifestyle of HEALTH, not a quick weight-loss strategy that won't last. Hang in there!

Debra,
no where in your post did I read that you and your husband are incorporating exercise into your lives. People that think that if they just stop eating and skipping meals are going about it all wrong. I used to think skipping meals was the way to go when I was in my late teens and early twenties but now, with the internet and all the info that there is out there on losing weight properly, there is no excuse.
I had a friend who's idea of dieting was not eating and one day she just collapsed. She starved herself which made her body hold on to fat and then turned her muscles into fat. She got a little thinner but was all flabby and unhealthy.
If you do the research, you will find out that if you dont eat enough, your metabolism slows down and your muscles turn to fat. You have to eat just enough calories but not more than you need to sustain you. Its simple... your intake of calories must not exceed the amount of calories that your body needs/burns. If you are actively exercising, you also need to take in enough calories to sustain your active lifestyle. The benefits of exercising and eating enough ( no more and no less) is that it jump starts your metabolism, makes your brain release the "feel good" endorphins like dopamine, so it literally makes you feel good, keeps you healthy, increases bone mass, keeps you fit, boosts your self esteem, etc. Most experts recommend eating 3 main meals and 2 - 3 healthy snacks in between. And definitely DONT SKIP BREAKFAST, it jumt starts your metabolism in the morning because it slows down at night when we sleep. Also, studies show that people who skip breakfast are more likely to over eat throughout the day.

No. When your metabolism is faster, you get hungrier because your body is burning the calories you've eaten faster. When your metabolism is slower you're not burning the calories as fast meaning that you don't get hungry as often. Have you ever noticed how skinny people eat and eat and eat but never gain any weight and how bigger people can eat one meal a day and still not lose anything?
Loading...
While this is true, it really doesn't have much to do with metabolism. Metabolism has been shown to only increase or decrease burning efficiency by 100 to 200 calories. That can add up of course b ut that's not enough to cause a major change like you're talking about. Does that make sense?

well, for those of you who do not know...adderall is basically pill form meth if you do not suffer from ADD/ADHD. Yes it does make you lose weight, but at a high cost of losing who you are. I suffered from an addiction to this pill for several months, I could easily attain it and it made me feel great, but as time went on I noticed every drop of creativity and imagination was gone and my personality went to midless chit chat and false intrest.
I finally kicked the habit of popping this pointless pill.
It makes getting work done easier...but thats why methamphetamine was givin to factory workers...IT'S AMERICA'S DRUG! %-)
It's really not worth taking to lose weight because you gain it back instantly if you don't use some other drug that supresses your hunger.

It is not meth but it does have a similar impact on the brain. I am so glad to hear that you were able to kick the habit though. Do you have any idea for people who struggle with this?

Yeah, I really wouldn't suggest that.
I myself take Adderall for my ADD and while it is helpful in helping me concentrate and stay focused the side affects arn't pleasent. It's basically the legal form of Speed. Sometimes in the middle of class, I can feel my heartbeat fluttering in my chest and it feels like it gets hard to breathe. Now that dosn't happen VERY often but it does happen none the less. As for the weight loss, it's not like it's helping you eat less, for me, I never want to eat at all. I have to make sure that I eat something before I take it or I won't eat for the rest of the day If I could help it. Now, I do force myself to grab a small salad during lunch. Losing weight by not eating anything is not healthy for the body. A doctor will not perscribe you Adderall for weight loss, it's addiction rate is to high and most people abuse it. It's not ment to be taken for someone to lose weight. I wouldn't even take the stupid capsule if I didn't think I absoultly needed it to help me concentrate. If I didn't take it, I act like a hyperactive idot >.< Plus you could find plenty of other ways to help you lose weight for wayyy less. Adderall isn't cheep. If your insurance dosn't cover it, it would cost $300 for a 25mg time release capsule. thats for the name brand. get the off brand and it's around $90. My advice, don't think of exercising as a boring workout. That puts you into a negative mindset. Go to the park or something and run around playing tag or something with you little brother or sister.

In response to the post on page 4 about large people not being lazy- I agree 100%.
Typically, people gain weight while on certain medications or when they have pre-existing medical conditions, such as hypothyroidism. Anyone that thinks otherwise is an ignorant and uneducated id**t.

When i was 14 I was put on adderall xr, and i was in the last semester of 8th grade. During the summer after 8th grade i went from weighing 190 lbs to 150 lbs. i personally don't think thats too healthy at all. but now i'm 16 and a junior in high school and i still weigh 150 lbs. im on adderall xr 30 milligrams. i get major headaches everyday, and severly depressed. even though i rarely admit it. i dont think anyone should use it as weightloss. the side effects arent worth it.

Since Adderall was originally intended to be a diet pill, I don't see the harm in
I did plenty of research on Adderall before trying it... and i am SO GLAD I took it.
This is what I found:
1. It is hard to find a doctor who will prescribe it. I was told that I would need to go through a psychological evaluation first, and re-visit every month. NOT NECESSARY. A general doctor can and will give an Rx, you just have to find him or her. I have Aetna, and they covered most of the RX, and I ended up paying $60 for 2 months worth.
2. I actually need it, so this has been an absolute life-changing medication for me. I am very scatter-brained. When I speak, I think faster than I can get words out. I am very easily distracted and never finish even simple things like putting all of the laundry away... I'd put half away and the rest would sit there for days. My school was ALWAYS a struggle, I would procrastinate until the very VERY last minute on everything from assignments to leaving my house. I lived like that for years and years... then literally, the DAY I started Adderall- I was a completely new person... Does it make you a BETTER student or a smarter person? Hell no! I hope you don't actually think that. BUT: I could think clearly, stayed very organized, I can speak in class and not go off on a tangent, I would concentrate on what I was doing thoroughly. Absolutely amazing.
3. If you are wanting it for weight loss, make sure you get Adderall and not Strattera. Strattera doesn't have the stimulant/appetite suppressant and therefore, less risk and more doctors are willing to prescribe it.
4. I lost 10 lbs per week, take 20mg a day. I was at 5'7" and 180 lbs about 3 weeks ago, am coming up on 160 today.. BUT in the beginning 14 days, I barely ate anything at all. I had no appetite. DON'T take advantage of that, I am an id**t. You will pass out and feel spacey/crazy if you don't make yourself have a piece of fruit or salad. Eventually, I would have days when I didn't lose anything even if I ate absolutely nothing. Eat SOMETHING, and definitely take a Multi-vitamin (or sometimes I drink Multi-V VitaminWater if I hadn't eaten yet that day. If you take a multi-vitamin on an empty stomach, you'll feel sick.) Don't drink caffeine or any other kind of stimulant, you are likely to have anxiety, rapid heartbeat & shortness of breath. My guess is that if I eat responsibly, I would lose 30 lbs this month. If I lived on a treadmill and had a death wish, 45-50 lbs at the end of the month. I don't work out per-say, but I walk more than usual (3 hours per day); I live in Manhattan.
I'd read of people losing 60 lbs in a month, but I don't know of their conditions, so it's hard to gauge.
5. Don't abruptly stop taking it.. you have to wean your way off of it if you would like to stop. I don't know what happened one day when I forgot to take it last week, but I woke up the next day and I was literally staring at the bottle on my nightstand for hours, and procrastinated taking it through the next day. I just slept and ATE an entire pizza... then slept more... and ordered Chinese. My roommate had to intervene! I took it the next day and now I'm back to normal. SO be very careful, it is a dangerous and addictive MEDICATION, not a kitschy herb or dietary supplement.

Hi there, I don't think that you should take the drug like that. I think that it would be a good idea to check with your doctor on that just to ensure that you're not messing your body up. What do you think?

I was prescribed to them, and not using alot of the sprinkles, just in the morning, like the pill.
It can't be to bad, One doctor I talked to told me its a healthy pill to take to lose weight. When I ask is there a pill I can loose weight on heathly. He said you are on one, Adderal; but nothing about the sprinkles, I just need to lose weight!
With my thryoid it doesn't help if I take Lexthyroxine or not
My knees can't take the weight at all, I popped my knees out two time, In the last year, I can’t go up stairs
I never was this big in my life, I hate looking in the Mirror! I hate being BBW. I look prego!
when I was 132-143, I was in a steady weight, I was able to jump, run, dance, walk dogs, actually they walked me. with out complaining, I hurt. yes my legs did rub, I watched what i ate, I can't dance because of my knees. I can't do the stomach bypass surgery, because I’m only 215. I asked, my other doc, thought I was joking.
I don't even eat alot, I hardly eat sweeties, I used to be the smallest in my foster home, I’m the biggest out of 2 girls. I was 129 before and loved it. I felt really good about myself, I walked alot.I know when I’m 30 years old I will be in a wheel chair because of my knees.
It’s because of DEPO.Then having your DHS working telling you, no it’s not DEPO, it’s your thryoid, when I never gain weight until after I was taking the shots. Then here it from a OBGYN Doctor saying no, it would start slow, you gsined weight to fast.
I will always have to take that pill my whole life. I never wanted to take pills, but know I want too, and only this one.
I’m starting a diet, fish, rice, and vegs, hoping that will help. and prune juice. i don’t have a job so i can’t go to the gym workout.I try to go with friends, but I always get a no or I would be doing it. I do salsa dances moves with my hips and stuff at least 30 mins, like once a day before I go to sleep.
I know 132 wasn't skinny, but i was health, happy, had energy. i remember when i started to gain the weight, my pants couldnt fit, i had to wear my leggings, i used to wear 8, 9, 10, 11, 12, in 2007, it took me 6 months to gain weight, and i stopped in 2008, went from 14, 16, 18, there cant find a 17,
my chest went up from a DD to an H and now an L. and I was only 19, but lost 2 inches of my chest so I'm L 42, most of my weight is on my chest, always had, I was held back in elementary, so I was older and puberty got my when I was in 4th grade,
I had a miscarriage and was 225, lost that. so I stay around the 211 to 220. Sad thing is that I told myself ifI was ever 200 I would kill myself.
my foster mom told me your not fat you have boobs. the other sad thing is that when i go to a plus size store, they don't have my size.

Well, what I meant about it was that if you were on it, I would be careful about how you take the drug. I think that you should just take the pill straight if you can. Does that make more sense?

You will probably lose weight but there is a dilema. Taking adderall or any stimulant usually lowers or eliminates your appetite. Food just won't be apetizing at all. You won't eat but by not eating you are preventing your body from getting adequate nutrients. When your body is not getting nutrients it needs-it eats away at your fat AND your muscle. You will lose fat but you will be flabby---not a healthy looking toned body you would get with diet and exercise. It's great when you first see yourself getting thinner but the other downside is it is not permanent. Once you stop taking them, your apetite will be back and probably even stronger because your body is trying to over compensate for all the food and nutrients it missed. You will quickly gain weight back, fat weight, and you will have no muscle. Adderall can be great for dropping a few pounds or to help study but it does have negative effects. It weakens your immune system, dehydrates your body and it also tends to make you really hot and sweaty. Your skin usually looks reddish orange and extremely flushed. It can make your sweat and body odors very foul. It also can cause insomnia--and enough sleep is essential to good health(skin, body weight, brain, etc.) If you do use this method to lose some weight, I would recommend planning meals and forcing yourself to eat them. Since you won't have a desire to eat--you can skip out all the junk food and snacking that is otherwise tempting. Eat four to five small meals filled with vegitables, fruit and protein a day>>This will be super easy to eat small and you will not overeat because your appetite won't be there. Make sure you drink TONS of water so your body can rehydrate. Also take your pill(s) first thing in the morning, that way they can wear off by bedtime so you can sleep. Hope this helps. Good luck!
