Hello all --

I have a Paragaurd IUD and I LOVE it. When I was 20 I experienced a very serious blood clot in my subclavian vein after being on the pill for about a year. That was 5 years ago. The Paragaurd insertion did hurt for about 24 hours after, but for 10 years of relatively worry free monogamous sex it was well worth it.

I urge women to please investigate all birth control options, because I always wanted a non-hormonal method (I can be emotionally sensitive -- and really did not like that the pill made me cry during cute commercials), but my OB/GYNs shot me down time and time again. Frankly, they are not me and they don't have my body. Do your research and choose what works best for you!

IUDs have a bad rep. The horrid reputation of 1970s IUD Delkon Shield really caused people to shy away from the method, however, while IUDs in the 1970s may have contributed to infertility later in life (hello torts class), they are a very well regulated and investigated industry now as a result.

Please remember that IUDs (hormonal or not) offer no protection against STDs --- but all is not lost! The pill doesn't either! So, don't let your Dr. dissuade you from an IUD just because it does not offer STD protection. The thing is, you have to protect yourself and there is absolutely nothing wrong with using condoms in addition to your IUD. It is a great idea for those in non-monogomous relationships or those that desire an extra degree of protection.

IUDs are the most effective single method of birth control (and over the long term the cheapest). There is no denying that there is the possiblility for fertility issues in the future, but the risk is small and the rewards great in my opinion.

Best,
Jess

%-) I have had my IUD in since December of 2006 after my daughter was born, I am now experiencing symptoms of pregnancy, which I've expereinced before, considering I am a mother of two children. I have not had a menstral cycle in over a year. I am freaking out right now and am going to schedule an appointment with my obgyn to find out whats going on. If anyone would like to share any info related to this please do.

I do not wish to say different but I feel I must. Please check this website www.pregnancy-info.net. Look up IUD malfuction. Over 1000 women have gotten pregnant with the IUD! It's more possible than you can think. I have just gotten pregnant and I have the IUD. So I have to get mine out ASAP. Plus my friend got pregnant also with the IUD but she had a miscarriage. The IUD was taken off the market a few years back then came back on with a different name. I do not trust artificial birth control any more. I can't stand the thought that my birth control kills tiny babies in me without me noticing! My culture believes that when the egg is fertilized with the sperm you are considered pregnant..medical doctors say it's when it attaches itself to your uterus. I'm not trying to have a debate with you but I feel it's only fair for them to have both sides of the story.

I have had my iud for 1 year and 2 months.
There has always been a bit of discomfort. More so in the first 6-8 months. Recently, it has been much better.
The most common feeling of discomfort, the menstration symptoms when I am not menstrating. I will feel swollen and ache in my uterus. Sometimes I will get sharp pains in my uterus. Although I do not have a period each month, there are months where I may have it very light, but three times. It has been much heavier this past month and I spotted again 2 weeks following!
I am 33yrs old, no children and love the idea of the IUD because I am in a monogamous relationship and very sensitive to the hormones in the pill and Nuvaring.
Are my IUD symptoms normal? They have lessened with time, but do they ever go away completely. Will they begin again when I have this one replaced? What if I don't replace my IUD at the 5 yr mark?
Clarifairy's posts have been useful to me. I am seeking advice from her as well as others with the IUD.

SOmetimes the feeling that you have is related to just having the IUD, as I am thinking that you should be okay and not pregnant so long as the IUD is in. Have you taken a pregnancy test at all?
