Hi,
I sprained knee when I fell on it during a game of baseball. I'm on a working vacation in the Carribbean and the doctor here gave me daily injections of anti-inflammatory drugs and prescribed heat treatments to the area immediately. This seems to go against the standard R.I.C.E. principle, so I'm wondering what to do.

It's been 11 days now and the swelling is mostly gone but there is still considerable pain and I can only bend my knee about 90 degrees. I don't want to end up with a permanent mobility issue, so what would be the best course of action now. Should I attempt stretching excercises even if it causes pain? I can already notice a difference in my thigh muscle from lack of use.

The majority of the swelling was at the front top of the knee where it meets the thigh. It is still painful if I press in that area.

Thanks for any advice.

hi, there is a train of thought that heat actually allows the damaged area of muscle to relax whereas although ice reduces swelling it can cause the fibres to contract even more. the anti - imflammatory drug is a good way to go, as a rule if it has only been a week you are doing pretty well as the knee is a notoriously difficult area to heal. i wouldn't recommend any strengthening exercises yet as you will be working against everything you have done so far. i would advise that you continue to gently mobilise the area so that you dont cease up, however speak to a physio or your doctor before going at it full throttle, this will strengthen everything back up and reduce the risk of a recurrent injury. hope this helps.
