Hello there! Low potassium and sodium levels can lead to many health problems. For example, potassium has influence on the heart, nerves, and muscles. Our arms and legs need potassium for the muscles to move, the heart would not beat without potassium, which is also necessary to regulate blood pressure. The organ that controls the balance of potassium is kidney. It removes excess potassium into the urine. Use of water pills (diuretic therapy), diarrhea, and chronic laxative abuse are the most common causes of low potassium. Low sodium levels can be very dangerous. Brain is very sensitive to sodium levels, low sodium causes symptoms including confusion and lethargy. The patient may feel nauseated, and experience muscle twitching, which can progress to seizures. Eventually, severe hyponatremia ( low sodium ) can lead to coma and death. Low sodium levels can be caused by kidney disorders in which the kidneys have difficulty eliminating fluids, by diuretic drugs used to treat high blood pressure. These drugs make the kidneys produce more urine, which can wash away too much sodium.
