I had a parathyroidectomy 5 months ago where my surgeon removed one of my parathyroid glands and the 1 inch tumor growing on it.  The tumor was benign.  Everything healed up fine and I feel much better after surgery except I am having major muscle spasms in my neck.  They are extremely painful.  I have been back to my surgeon and then to my primary care dr.  I was given muscle relaxers and an anti-inflammatory but neither of those are really helping with my pain.  I can only take the muscle relaxers at night since they make me drowsy.  Is there a reason why I am having these muscle spasms and do you have any suggestions on what I should do to relieve this pain?

Muscle spasms can occur for various reasons and may not necessarily be directly related to the parathyroidectomy itself. Here are a few possible reasons why you might be experiencing muscle spasms in your neck:

  1. Surgical trauma: The surgical procedure and the subsequent healing process can sometimes lead to muscle imbalances or tension in the surrounding muscles, resulting in spasms.

  2. Changes in calcium levels: The parathyroid glands are responsible for regulating calcium levels in the body. Following a parathyroidectomy, it's possible that your calcium levels have been affected, which can sometimes lead to muscle irritability and spasms.

  3. Nerve irritation or compression: During the surgery, nearby nerves or structures could have been affected, leading to nerve irritation or compression, which can manifest as muscle spasms.

To help relieve the pain from muscle spasms, you can try the following:

  1. Gentle stretching and exercises: Consult with your healthcare provider or a physical therapist who can recommend specific stretches and exercises to help relieve muscle tension and spasms in your neck.

  2. Heat or cold therapy: Applying heat or cold packs to the affected area may help relax the muscles and reduce pain. Experiment with both options to see which provides more relief for you.

  3. Massage: Consider getting a professional massage or using self-massage techniques to help relax the muscles in your neck.

  4. Stress management techniques: Stress and tension can exacerbate muscle spasms. Engaging in relaxation techniques such as deep breathing exercises, meditation, or yoga may help reduce muscle tension and promote overall well-being.

Hope this will help you. All the best!
