It is hard to believe that some women who have already gone through puberty, do not recognize the signs that their daughter is going through puberty. A young girl's body changes a lot between the ages of 9 and 16. Their body begins to release hormones and begins preparing for her first period. If you have a daughter, it is your responsibility to educate or re-educate yourself about puberty. Your puberty experience may be very different than what your daughter experiences, so read up on puberty. When you notice signs that your daughter is beginning puberty, don't wait for the school to show the "girls film" at school. Talk to her yourself. She'd probably rather hear from you anyway. Tell her some of the possible things she may begin to experience and that puberty looks different in every girl. Let her know that even though what she will experience may seem strange, it is most likely very normal. Let her know there may be things you don't even know about puberty and that if she has any questions or is worried about something she notices that you and she can find out together what it is. Girls are very afraid that you will rush them to the doctor and that they will be poked and prodded in their most private area. Telling her that you will figure it out together helps them to know that you aren't going to make her see a doctor unless you really need to.
