"I want to lead a normal life hemorrhoid free. I hope more people will write in with positive stories to bolster my courage."

Two years later, I am leading a hemorrhoid free life (2 removed, 1 ligated) and IT IS WONDERFUL. Had to deal with 1 week of intense pain (I only took OTC painkillers) then just normal surgical recovery. As you've seen many times, my only regret is waiting so long to do it. Good luck and I hope you have as much success as I did

Hi Scott,

Thanks for your posts.
Im after 8th days in it and I like to know if you had to use any suppository to avoid rectal shrinking?
My doctor told me I have to for a month but I havent used one yet, its too painful to put it up.

I never did. It took awhile (months) for my butt/system to get to the new normal. I would get up from a bowel movement thinking everything was great (no pain or anything like that), but would find out that stool had come out later after I was done. Nothing that caused any issues. And like I said that whole thing went away after some months as my body adjusted to the new normal.

I had my hemorrhoidectomy 10 days ago, and this has truly been a humbling experience.
I have had hemorrhoids on and off since the age of 20, but over the past year they have become unbearable. I am a 35 year old, fairly healthy and active female. Over the past year I have made efforts to increase my fiber intake to at least 20 g per day and increase my fluid intake. Although I have made the appropriate changes to my diet, my hemorrhoids would still flare up with each bowel movement. I saw a colorectal surgeon in November and he advised that a Hemorrhoidectomy would be the only surgical intervention that would resolve my issue. He advised it would be very painful surgery, and did not seem pushy at all. I thought over all of my options and decided to go forward with the surgery for February 8, 2018.

I was required to do a Fleet enemas prior to my surgery. That was very interesting, indeed. I had the surgery without any issues, but the pain started within an hour of me leaving the surgical center. Also, I begin to have rectal spasms almost immediately.

Once I got home I was in full-blown pain. I was prescribed oxycodone, metronidazole, Ketorolac Tromethamine and Cyclobenzaprine for spasms- I’m not totally sure if the med helped with my spasms. The oxycodone was a godsend, but I used sparingly because I feared constipation. Call me vain, but one of the first things that I did once getting home was take out a mirror and look at my surgeons work. I was absolutely mortified at what I saw. Post operative hemorrhoidectomy photos that I had seen online looked nothing like what I was staring at. I felt as if my genitals had been mutilated. There was an area between my vagina and anus, I guess this is called the perianal area, that looked absolutely awful.I felt as though I had did the surgery for nothing, as the area looked worse than any flareup I’ve ever had.I was immediately very depressed and very upset with my surgeon. I could only hope that this area was just swelling and will go back to normal.

Honestly The next two days were a blur as I was in so much pain, and all I did was sleep, take meds, and eat. I will add that it was very difficult to pee, due to swelling and the spasms and passing gas was very painful.

My diet consisted of Kashi original cereal (13g fiber), Quaker high fiber oatmeal (10g fiber), and lots of water.

I did not have a bowel movement until day three. My first bowel movement was minimal, but it hurt so bad. Day four I had my second bowel movement, and I was literally shaking, covered in sweat, and about to throw up on the toilet. It felt as though my anus was sewn together, but yet I am trying to pass stool. After I was done I immediately got in the bathtub. What made the pain even more unbearable was that I had gotten my period, so i had additional pain-I actually cried on this day. I also wanted to note that after each sitz bath I applied bacitracin to my surgical area. By day five I was totally off any pain meds and continue to be pain med free. I would say I have a high tolerance for pain.

At this point I totally regretted getting the surgery and wished I could just have my old life back. There was nothing that I could do at this point and I felt totally helpless. As days went on I would say that I was progressing for the better. Bowel movements are still difficult, and at day 10 I still get very sore after passing stool that is very soft. I continue to waddle around like a penguin, and I have actually lost 3 pounds so far. My area of concern seems to be getting smaller and hopefully by week six things will look as normal as possible.

Because I have not seen or felt the end result I cannot truly say if I regret having the surgery, and from what I have been reading online it seems I could have been much more worse off than I was. I am just ready to get my old life back and work out again. This experience has really helped me to realize that I have so much to be thankful for, I shouldn’t complain, but be grateful for the ability to carry out my day-to-day functions.

Hi,

I was operated 2 days before you. Today I had two BMs after 3 days without BMs and especially the second one was still bleeding a lot.
I dont know how long the bleeding will last, its been 15 days since the op after all.

Brian, your story is similar to mine. The stories here scared the hell out of me. I was reading nothing but negative stories about the operation and almost didn’t go through with it. Glad I did because the pain wasn’t as bad as many of these people made it out to be. My first BM was almost painless and I can even sit after 3 days. Also, I had a cluster with one big one. I was told by my doctor to take two weeks off. Good to say, not needed.

For anyone getting the operation, please keep in mind that the horror stories you are reading are from people who are looking for a place to express their pain. Most people who aren’t in pain and are functioning well, won’t take the time to go to a website and talk about the positives because they’re living life.

Good luck to all.

I'm now 6.5 months since my surgery and things are great! As I've been feeling so good, I've been back in the gym every day and have lost 35lbs!

While I appreciate that some people have experienced difficulty, my own experience leads me to believe it is generally only those who have a bad experience who post regularly about it online. The majority of the people who have the surgery are fine.

Just wanted to give an update several months out! I don't even think about this stuff anymore, and it used to be such a big part of my life!

Positive stories are good to read. I had a hemorrhoidectomy 7 days ago. I’ve dealt with both internal and external ones for about 15 years, but they got severe after having my two kids.
I lived my life around flare ups, on a daily scale. It really was no way to live. My last flare up was so bad, I had two thrombosed hemorrhoids and was away on vacation with friends. I had to fly home with them, and almost passed out due to the pain.
I decided to have the surgery right away. I woke up from the procedure in no pain, very little discomfort. First day was prey good, very little pain. Once the numbing medicine wore off, different story. Pain is pretty high, although the pain I’ve lived with having bad hemorrhoids wasn’t too far from this. I’m on day 7 and trying to wean off the Percocet. Still sore but it’s a slow process. I’m not there yet, but I know that this is the right decision and will be totally worth it in the long run!
