I agree on the bio/psychological theory... I've been dealing with this for a number of years and it seems that whenever I'm anxious or adrenaline flows (e.g. - prior to boarding a plane or public speaking or something) the shrinkage occurs - pretty drastically too. However; other times, it seems as if it just comes out of nowhere... I'll be sitting idly and feel it starting to happen, and fluctuate at random throughout the day. It happens regularly when working out or doing any sort of demanding physical activity too - I guess I've just become used to it.

I have what I think is an unusual problem. I'm 42, in excellent shape, eat very healthy, don't drink or smoke. Exercise 5-6 days a week with weights and do cardio 5 days a week. About 2 yrs ago I noticed my erections weren't what I was used to. This has progressively worsened, and my libido is about half of what it was 2+ years ago. Also my penis most of the time feels lifeless, it takes a bit of work on my wife part to get me aroused and ready for intercourse. Once inside I find my erection actually lessens a little. I have also noticed when I ejaculate, it is far less than what I did 2+ years ago. I've gone to a specialist a few times, my testosterone levels were okay, 600. My sperm count etc all came back okay by today's standards. Even if I use Viagra, Cialis (which I have even taken 2-20mg tabs at once) I don't find much of a difference. I do wake up at times with an erection as hard as when I was half my age, but not when I need it. Anyone experience anything like this or have any input? Thanks in advance, needless to say this has me avoiding sex with my wife more and more, which really bothers me. She is extremely supportive and understanding. HELP PLEASE

I'm 28 with this problem.

Some slight differences... All it takes is prolonged bending over to lift something, or like tonight, just jogging across the street. I am also going through some erectile dysfunction right now, not sure why. My sexual appetite is not what it used to be.

Also the shrinkage is very inconsistent... the severity is different from day to day. I first experienced this about a year ago for a couple months. Then it went away until last week.

I notice it immediately whenever it happens. And it last for a few hours. When I need to urinate I have to stretch it out because there's nothing to hold onto otherwise.

Other health problems (brand new in last month) may be related. My eyes are literally drying out. I need eye drops regularly. I have an insatiable urge for salty foods, suddenly. Also I feel really tired and worn out.

I scheduled a doctor appointment next week. I feel humiliated to share my problem and afraid of hearing whats wrong with me.

What I hate about doctors offices is that all of my records are computerized and the female nurses have access to do their jobs. I went to high school with 2 of the female nurses at my doc's office.

Yeah yeah I know about HIPPA rules, but I'm no id**t, there are loopholes.

Followup to my previous post.

I dont understand how this suddenly happens. I went 27 years with this NEVER happening.

Why start up now?

Unless you live in a tiny town, why not go to a Dr that isn't so close by where there would be less of a chance you know anyone? I completely understand your feeling uncomfortable, why put that pressure on yourself.

Well, i dont have much choice because of my insurance. plus i like my doctor, the staff, & the facility is brand new

To be honest i'm not that worried about the nurse knowing, i hate the idea of shrunken penis or words to that effect in my computer record. Now hundreds of people could read my information until i'm dead because its computerized.

i liked the way it was before. handwritten records filed away in some back room filing cabinet where nobody is going to see them

Hi everyone,

I found your posts very interesting. You should all know that, although personally embarrassing, what you're experiencing is completely normal and in no way detrimental to your health. In fact, I would surprised and concerned if you body did not do this.

There is a muscle at the base of your penis that, when triggered by temperature, or vigorous activity, will contract and pull your penis and testicles close to your body. In cold temps, it does this to protect the sperm in your testicles. They need to be kept at a fairly constant temperature. Second, when you exercise vigorously, your body may pull in your genitalia (a) to protect them from the continuous jolts and/or (b) because when you sweat, the surface of your skin is actually cool (have you ever shivered after an exercise in the air conditioning of the gym) and this is confusing the nerve receptors that react with that usually relaxed muscle at the base of your penis, pulling in your genitalia.

If it bothers you, work out less vigorously or take a shower at home instead of at the gym (probably more sanitary anyway). And just remember, our bodies have had millennia of evolution to react to our environment properly in order to keep out bodies healthy and safe. Shrinkage happens for your benefit, don't fight it, accept it.

As a woman, let me tell you, you guys talk about enough, or we have seen the Seinfeld episode so many times that we know what it is and probably won't be surprised if we happened across it one day.

It is very normal during a vigorous exercise or swimming for your testicles to retract up and hang higher in your scrotum, as well as for your penis to get smaller.

Many guess experience this in Teens and 20's guys of l ages.

It just depends on the person to what degree it is normal.

I would not worry about it.

Hi
After reading your posts it's obvious it has to do with blood flow (and maybe adrenalin). A question also is do you have a lot on your mind? Recently I've been mentaly active (and known as someone who thinks too much). What I've noticed with myself is that while i'm running my mind is active, rather than relaxed. And to have this blood in my brain as well as other areas of my body might be causing this. I do remember times when I used to be alot more relaxed and don't remember having the problem then. As for the guys who are having pain, id say a doctors visit is a good option, if they don't believe you show them this post. But overall maybe we should just try and relax. Oh and I like the post about using the organ more for what it was intended. Who doesn't want more sex???

I have suffered from this for as long as I can remember. It's a completely normal reaction to strenuous activity. Although at times, it can be extremely frustrating for me.

Another cause can be anxiety. I have suffered from anxiety for many years on and off. Every time I have had a panic attack my penis will shrivel up and my scrotum will completely tighten up, pulling my testicles into my abdomen. Again, this is a completely normal reaction to the adrenaline that runs through our body when we are in stress, be it emotional, mental, or physical.

I am rail thin, so when this happens there is no fat to hide it and it will show though my clothes. Of course, the extent to which it is visible depends on how severe the shrinkage is and on what I am wearing. Thin, loose clothing like gym shorts show it all, while tighter and more rigid clothes like jeans tend to hide it much more. This used to freak the sh*t out of me! But I have learned that it is not something to ashamed or embarrassed about. I've even seen other people get it too.

There is actually a phenomenon called "Koro" that has been documented in various parts of the world. Most research tends to suggest that it is a cultural phenomenon, which I disagree with being that I have felt panicked over my retracting equipment before, as have many who have posted in this thread. You can run a Google search on it.

If you find that you are distraught over this natural function of the human body, perhaps you should check with your doctor to make sure everything is in proper order. If that still doesn't assure you, and you find that it is causing you undue grief it may be wise to talk to a Psychiatrist or Psychologist about it. They will be able to help you with either medication and/or therapy.

I found one of the earlier posts regarding Samurai warriors purposely achieving this shrinkage to be of particular interest.

I'm 23 and can't remember when I didn't have this problem. I've always been embarrassed about this, and often checked to see what size my tool was before undressing at the gym or with a girl. Anyway, since starting medical school last year I think I've figured out what's going on with our shrinkage and hopefully my post can clear all of this up once and for all. Using myself as an example, I'm a strong guy and I have to study a lot so it makes sense to me that for the amount of body mass my heart is supplying blood to (even at a leisurely pace) and the amount I'm thinking (probably more than I'm designed to) there just isn't enough blood for all my parts (and to be quite honest, I'm glad my penis blood is going to my brain and heart). What makes matters worse is that by anticipating the embarrassment of shrinkage our bodies secrete adrenaline in response to the stress. This makes our hearts beat faster, but now an even greater percentage of blood goes to supply our coronary arteries and less to our genitalia. Now what's there to do about this?
We can increase our blood volume by drinking more H2O and consuming more iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12 (found in the common daily vitamin (such as 1-a-days). We need to reduce stressing (particularly about our shrinkage) so we secrete less adrenaline.
Why don't most other men seem to have this problem? They may have less body mass (lower bmi), may be more relaxed, or may have better cardiovascular health (if there are less plaques in the arteriovenous system, or lower blood pressure the heart doesn't have to pump as hard -> lower required blood supply to heart -> leaves more blood to fill the genitalia).
In conclusion, as Robin Williams once said “God gave men both a penis and a brain, but unfortunately not enough blood supply to run both at the same time.” I hope this helped.
