Let me start of by saying my name is Alonnie, I'm a 17 year old girl who is on day 6 of tonsilectomy recovery. Someone please take the time to read and answer some of the questions I have or just take the time to read it so you can know what my 6 days of hell have been like. So my case is pretty rare, I never had strep or mono or any sore throats of that matter in my entire life. Instead of explaining this next part in detail, let me just say that since December to now(March) I've had 3 consistent swollen throats none being strep or mono. The first time I went to a medical care place they tested for strep and mono but came back negative. Gave me antibiotics and not a week later it came back. Went to a different. Medical care place and they again tested me, came back negative, and gave me additional antibiotics and steroids for 5 days. Not a day after my medicine was done it returned so I went back to the same place, they tested me again coming back negative, and we're shocked because they were so big, yet nothing was fixing them. So they gave me another round of steriods, and I went to my primary care doctor a couple days later. He was also in shock at how big they were and how random it was from a girl who's never had a sore throat. So he suggested that I go see an ENT(ear nose and throat) doctor, so before I went I had to go get my blood taken, (I have very tiny veins so its always a struggle) and then they said everything was fine and sent it off to the ENT. So, I go to the ENT, and i sit in his fancy chair and he checks my ears nose and throat. Of course his reaction to my throat was again, wow. He immediately suggested I get them taken out as soon as possible even though he said usually they won't take them out unless there has been a previous history of step or something along those lines. But he said mine were so closed up that it could stop me from breathing at night and so we decided to get them out on the 17th of March. I was very nervous, all people under my insurance have to get their procedure done at a surgery center so that's where I went. I didn't know if I had to take my clothes off or not and that made me nervous. I went in, had a lovely nurse she was my favorite. She made me feel so comfortable. She told me to get undressed but I could leave my underwear on and take off any piercings which I had my nose piercing in so I took out, got into a gown, took of my socks and put on those booties, and put on the cap for my hair. I laid in the bed, my parents were next to me, she found my vein and gave me an iv. Now listen to this part, about an hour of waiting for my doctor, they finally get a hold of him and he was sick! His offices canceled all of his office appointments but not his surgery patients. So here I am, 8:30 in the morning sitting on this bed waiting to get this over with and my doctor wasn't even coming in. So we were very upset, left, got a big breakfast, because you can't eat after 12 the night before, so my tummy was starving, and then made a not so pleasant call to the office. After it was all settled they rescheduled my surgery to the 19th which was that Thursday so I got an extra day to eat! Now fast forward to all the steps that Thursday was in the bed with the im waiting for the doc and he shows up apologizes then goes to change. After sitting there for a good 30 minutes they are ready to take me back. So the nurses give me the good stuff in my IV to make me sleepy, and she asked me a random question "do you like roller coasters" which I have a crazy love for them. I'd go on any roller coaster. Cedar Point, Ohio has my favorites. They wheel me back to the OR and im getting sleepy. I can't remember what they were talking about but I was still up. They stuck those suction cup things to me, 3 of them. Two by my heart and one under my boob. Then I was asleep. When I woke up I was shaking uncontrollably, my teeth were chattering my body wouldn't stop shaking. I think this was because the anesthesia. They gave me something and my body calmed down but I was nasaous as heck! So they gave me two shots of something in my IV, the nurse gave me an alcohol pad to smell and it still didn't go away. I didn't feel pain I just felt like throwing up. They said they could give me a shot in my butt that would make the naseua go away but I didn't want any shot in my butt so I just said I was fine. I had to get my prescription filled at the ENTs office so the car ride home was the worse. I just wanted to be in bed sleeping. The sunlight bothered me and opening and closing my eyes didn't make a difference I was sick. So I'm going to count this as
Day 1: went home, felt no pain but was super sick and wanted to sleep. My grandma went to 7-11 and pick me up a coca cola slurpee because I couldn't even drink water. So I just drank a few sips of the slurpee and couldn't do it. I had an episode where I felt like I couldn't breathe, I was breathing very fast so I called my doc and he assured me I could breathe it's just going to be a little swollen so I tried to relax. He told me that in all the years he's being taking out tonsils, mine were in his top 10 largest. So for most of the day I slept. I started my liquid medicine ( liquid oxycodone ) and my liquid antibiotic. They suggest you eat and I suggest you eat to or else you'll be sick like me and all day k was sick because I didn't eat and took medicine. I finally found a comfortable spot and tired to get rest. I would only sleep for 20, 30 minutes at a time and would was up with my mouth being so dry. So id drink lots of water then go back to sleep and repeat. Vaseline is very helpful for the lips but you have to keep applying it.
Day 2: day 2 my boyfriend came to visit me, we layer in bed and I started to cough. He thought it was cute but you have to be careful when you cough. Just be gentle and try and drink water to clear your throat. I wasn't in pain but I couldn't really talk or eat still. I was just drinking lots of water. The doctor gave me Nausea pills that disovle in my mouth so I took one of those. I wasn't really in any pain, it was just uncomfortable.
Day 3: I tried drinking ensure, but I found that because It had dairy it made me cough a little bit so I stopped drinking it. I continue to take my pain medicine every 4 hours but it's only making me want to sleep. So I sleep for 30 minutes then they pain medicine wears off. I tried to eat right before or right after I took my pain medicine. I've been taking my antibiotic once in morning once in ️️night but still feeling sick. The nausea doesn't go away for me until day 6. On this day I had the worst sick feeling. Later on that night I got another slurpee since I hadent been eating and I just took my medicine and bam! Felt the need to throw up, so I threw up and it was dark because of the slurpee but I didn't see blood red color, so after I threw up i took pain medicine, then I went to bed. Again only sleeping for 20-30 minutes at a time, but better than nothing.
Day 4: through out all of these days I've been drinking a lot of water. So much water that I never want to drink water again. After a while it starts to taste like metal so I have to drink it cold. I have a cooler by my bed that I filled with ice and water. I'm not a fan of Gatorade but im sure that would be very helpful to drink. I tried drinking chai tea day 4 and it was good. It went down nice and it was a little warm but closer to the cool side. I wouldn't suggest anything hot because that would make you swell. I tried vanilla pudding but it was too thick, I didn't like baby food, and applesauce didn't taste good so I just drank tea and water. Again because I've been drinking water and taking my pain medicine regularly there hasn't been much pain(more pain to come.) I still haven't been able to talk and my dogs love it because I can't yell at them to get off my bed. I find when I go to sleep and I wake up, a section of my taste buds have dried out. They become so dry and rough they almost feel like they've become risen and they just feel weird. A little water helps it go away.
Day 5: here's the day I try some new food ideas. I tried flan, that went down nice, I also had a tiny bit of Mac and cheese, was a little hard to get down but I needed something. Day 5 I ran out of my pain medicine. The bottle say no refils but if I'm in pain and I haven't taken any more than I should, they have to give me more. So I got another bottle. The first bottle was 300mL and the second one is 500mL. I Was feeling sick so I decided that I would take it every 5 hours instead of 4 because maybe it was the medicine. Pretty much I lay in bed and sleep all day. But day 5 was different. I took a nap around 7 and when I woke up sharp sharp pain. Pain where it felt like I was swallowing glass. I guess this is the part where the scabs start to come in and it sucks. My tongue my jaw my throat everything hurts. I take pain medicine and go to bed.
Day 6: it's now 9:45am and its day 6. My throat still feels like I'm swallowing glass and I'm not even going to bother to talk. For the past couple of days ive been craving pizza rolls, craving! And as of yesterday Burger King permanently came back with the chicken fries(greatest food to ever exist) so I just can't wait to eat and go back to food. I'm not sure if I want to try scrambled eggs this morning or not. I'm not sure if I can eat ketchup? Is that acidic? I loved eggs and ketchup. If you have an tips please leave them for me. If any one replys I can keep you posted if not, this is my story until day 6.
