Im 20 years old and have had two of these cyst..the first one i experience pain while walking,sittng..and so i decided to feel down there, oh my i had a lump the size of grape:/ well i freaked out started crying and had my fiance take me to the emergency room...wow!! I wish i would of stayed home haha i got cut:p a needle made its way deep "to numb" the are and the doc to work his magic...worst day of my life...so i thought i letf the hospital with a word catheter that was soooo uncomfortable...well all that for nothing the damn thing fell off a week later..go to the doc and they decided to let "it heal on its own" and of curse lots of sitz bath..well four weeks later ooh la la i feel like a champ and we decided to get busy and have sex..bad idea, nxt thing i know there it is agqin..but it came back to freqking destroy me!! Over night it got as big as an egg..no kidding! Well i dont wanna go to the hospital "i dont wanna get cut" i kept telling myself in bed with a one year old in ny room playing and only getting up when it was time for him to eat..it was hell i searched all over the web..they all say the same thing...another night goes by and i wake up with literaly a tennis ball still refusing to get seen. I think to myself "warm water is not working" so i fill my tub with cold water..and ice cubes.(i was desperate") took a deep breath and got in..well just the lower body "duh" i couldnt believe what i was seeing withing minutes...it was shrinking size. But still nothing..no pus, blood nothing well i stayed there for 4minutes i was freezing and my cyst was the size of an egg now Amazing "i thought"..got out and it was turn for my so called warm sitz bath..well i filled the tub for the second time except with burning hot water..ok what i could tolerate. Haha my water is nice and steamy there i was with my butt on the tub and my legs stretch with burning water..i cried like. A baby. It wasnt because of pain ..more bqcause of my situation and how miserable i felt by having that thing..well you guessed it...it swelled up again, i was amazed and than "idea" im contracting this cyst i thought..with cold it shrinks..with hot it comes back to the orig size.8 minutes in this water and than cold water again 2mins this time, cause i really couldnt stand the coldness..i got out warmed up and took some advil cause i had nothing but those haha pain is moderate i can go sit with my son and fiance and watch paranormal activity 2. Haha well i get thirsty got up my couch(which had plastic bags..just in case) and some nastyness starts to roll down my thighs. Im very embarrassed that my fiance saw that:l well that was it still no nothing but some dripping..movie is over advil is wearing out and i went to pee..once again my fiance is brushing his teeth "im peeing"..no biggie. Wow i stand up and it burst...it was DISGUSTING!!..but boy i was relief..but oh sh*t my fiance saw the "fiasco" but still i was relief haha i washed off i cleaned my bathroom and that thing was still draining..not as bad..but still.2 days later i was done my "lip" was no longer swollen and i was back on my feet cleaning and being a mommy/housewive. Its been 3 weeks since than. Nothing so far..and we just "did it" again haha 3 days ago and ..no lump no nothing. I dont wanna be all happy already but i think me not going to the doc was a good choice because i let nature take its course. It was very painful and just as i almost gave in into.."getting cut" i told myself not to. So heres what worked for me so far..No doc, hot and cold baths and now i know whem it hurts the most is when is about to burts... now this was a total of 3 days of mild pain ,moderate pain amd severe pain the final day..plus 2 days of swollen vjj. Thats it..no catheter,no needle. No doctor. I will be glad to share wheather it actually worked. So far im gonna hopefully enjoy my fiance;p and worry no more.

Hi. I have had this surgery last week. I felt no pain after the surgery. but I was carefull with the way I move .

now after less than a week I can also sit . I could walk easily the day after surgery. you may have to stay home for one week.

if you take good rest after the surgery and keep the area clean , i don't think there would be a problem. be careful with the doctor you choose, some one experienced could be more reliable.

Iam 26 yrs old and had been having reoccurring bartholin cysts since I was 16. I t had gotten so bad that it was bigger then a tennis ball and infected my labia.. E.R doctor told me it was a skin infection, then the next day I couldnt stand up or walk! The same hospital the next day, butchered me.. cut too deep and got a blood clot. They called in a Gyno finally and he packed me and put in a word cath. Over the years, it has come back dozens of times, I knew when one was coming so I would try to stop it from getting big by sitz baths and warm compresses. It usually worked but sometimes I couldnt do enough and it would swell up in a day to a golf ball. One of my last ones was when I was pregnant so nothing could be done but go to the E.R and had it drained. Well, it finally came back when I was ready to have surgery to end the saga. I was going in for a marsupilization but once the doctor cut into the cyst, he said I had so much scar tissue and drainage was deep, he decided to cut the entire gland out!! Im glad he did because I have seen too many stories where they have come back after marsupilizations. My recovery was very painful, I was out of work for only 4 weeks though and was told my body was rejecting the sutures. I didnt heal perfectly according to the incision but its ok knowing I have 99.9% chances of it EVER coming back! I say go for the whole gland removal if anyone is having problems with this!!!!

Hello ladies I wanted to post a response after going through the same pain most of you women have been through.

I have had this problem since 2007 at least once a year i would develop the same lump between my legs. The pain was unbearable.

Well here is my latest incident with my bartholin gland. Well Monday I woke up and my vagina was itching and burning so I decided to reach down and check it out the situation. When i reached down there the same damn lump was there so I called my doctor after I was at work and in pain for about three hours and she told me to come right in. So I left work and was there in 15 minutes.

I got there and she saw me immediately. She lanced it open and it began to drain i felt instant relief. She sent me home and told me to come back on Friday. Well Tuesday I was doing good, Wednesday I was okay, Thursday morning I couldn't sit hardly by that afternoon around lunch I couldn't walk and was in pain. Friday morning walking was a battle I went to my 9:15 appointment to find out that the cyst tripled in size and had closed up. So she lanced it again. Unfortunately this time she squeezed it trying to get the pus and blood out. It was so painful that all I could do was cry. It hurt so bad she had to stop to let me breath. After she was done getting all the infection out she realized that what was left' was a hard lump.

She thought it could possibly be a tumor. She said if it didn't look and better she would consider doing surgery to open it to permenaetly drain or remove the gland all together. Well I went home in pain and scared to death that I could possibly have cancer. My doctor asked me to return the following Monday so that she could remove the drain. Well Friday evening was painful, Saturday I couldn't move it was so swollen I couldn't walk. Well I went to the bathroom to pee soon as I sat down I heard something pop. It was the drain it fell out in the toilet. Well while I sat on the toilet the cyst also busted and started draining. Wow thank God I finally got some relief. So I got back to the doctor on Monday and to her surprise I told her the drain fell out. So she checked it again only to see that it was closed and started to swell again. At that moment she decided that surgery was my best option. She told me all the risks that could be involved i.e. the excessive bleeding, possiblility of needing a blood transfusion, the pain, and the pain could last up to a year. The surgery was scheduled for the next Monday.

So that brings me to where I am today Monday 5/16/11 I had the surgery. She warned me that it would be painful. Boy she wasnt kidding! When I woke up from surgery There was an intense rush of pain to where the gland once was. I was in so much pain that my blood pressure went through the roof. It was suppose to be an outpatient surgery. i just got out of the hospital today its Wednesday 5/18/11 lol. For the last two days I have had nothing but pain.

I can say that my doctor deserves all the credit she was excellent in caring for me while I was in the hospital. She used iv anti inflamatories the help reduce swelling and pain. I was delivered pain medicine around the clock with a Morphine pump for the first 12 hours. She also places ice packs on my vaginal area that helped reduce the pain. The pain was unbearable those first two days but today i still have pain and as long as i am in the bed resting I am fine I noticed that the more I move around, sit up or stand for long periods I am in excrutiating pain.

Overall I am glad that I did this surgery. Its not as bad as many people have made it out to be here on this board. I do thankful that I was blessed with a good Doctor Mrs. Willis is wonderful. She is a true blessing. She will remain my doctor forever.

So to all you ladies out there going through this there is light at the end of the tunnel.

I truely know what everyone else is going through.I got my first BGC when I was just 15. I was truely scared because I didn't know what it was but was not sexually active. It was small but very red, and painful. I went to the gyno (she was rude) and she explained what it was and said she did not want to lance it because of my age and to take sitz baths and hopefully it will go away on its own. Luckily it did...

When I was 18 it came back. (when I met my current bf) I could not walk and went to the ER because i could not wait for my app with the gyno. They lanced it and put a word cathetar in. The word cathetar made the cut burn everytime it moved. and no one ever told me the extreme stinging pain I would feel when I would need to pee. I ended up holding gauze against the cut while I peed so I would not feel that burning pain. The word cathetar only stayed in for a few days before falling out. I followed up with a gyno who had said everything was fine.

Unfortunately the cyst came back 3 months later. I could not believe it. I was depressed knowing I would have to go through that procedure yet again. I literally woke up with a golf ball down there and horrible pain. I went to a different gyno that was so rude to me. That he made me cry. like he didnt believe me that it came over night. And he said has your bf seen this? how horrible is that to say to a patient   its already embarrassing as it is.I wanted to walk out but I just wanted the damn thing to be done with. So he lanced it in the office and put a word catheter in, only this time he stitched the word catheter in place. I was fine until the pain medicine wore off when i got home. This by far was the worse pain yet. That I could not made it up my steps, and therefore my mom rushed me back so he could remove the stitches..I almost passed out in the car from the pain.I remember half of my body going numb. well he removed the stitches and it healed well and  I switched doctors after that.He recommended a marsupulization.

The cyst was always there but I believe it did not get big due too me and my bf not having sex because it hurt. Then I had a ruptured ovarian cyst that I was bleeding internally. I went to the ER. The on call doctor that is in the same practice as my new gyno. He told me that the BGC was starting to fill up again and that next time they will do a marsuplization and remove the gland. They could not do the procedure until it got bigger. Some time has past and then the cyst got bigger about two weeks ago extremely painful to walk, sit, etc. I called the gyno and guess what they said sorry we dont have any apps for a month! A month I thought? youve got to be kidding me? so i began searching for a new gyno and i found one. I went into the office told her all my problems lol and she explained everything and I made the app for the marsupulization.

Gland Removal:
well friday I had my surgery and to my surprised she decided to remove the gland because the gland was so deep. Im actually very happy she did. The surgery wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be. (compared to what ive been reading) yes it was painful and I took oxycotin the first day i was home, and 600mg of ibuprofen in between, but its getting better. It actually hurts less then the cysts. There was alot of bleeding afterwards. Today the bleeding clamed down but I am still using pads. I believe the pain I feel now is mostly from all the packing inside and Im a little nervous when she removes it Monday. She also prescribed a lidocaine jelly and recommended dermoplast (im using the regular one).
They also gave me one of those water bottles to squirt after I pee. My advice is a good doctor. I love my doctor now I dont think Id be feeling as well as I am if it wasnt for her.The most important thing is finding an excellent doctor that explains everything, someone that is understanding. And alot of times you can find reviews online. As for sex? im not even thinking about it right now lol Im going to give it a chance to really heal.

I wish you all the best!

I am 38 and just had the bartholin cyst removed 10 days ago. The pain was horrible after I got up from surgery. I had to take alot of pain pills and stay in the bed for severe pain. I could not get up to even go to the bathroom without having to have someone help me. I still am having very sharp pains even though I went to the Dr a couple days ago and she said the cut is healing up fine. The pains are still so bad that I can not return to work or even drive a car. I'm now having new pains I guess from the surgery and there is a very hard white knot as you enter the vagina that hurts very bad to sit or lay down. I called the Dr yesterday and she said take three sitz baths a day and return to see her on Monday if the pain is not better, she thinks maybe it is an infection, or the stiches. I told her My rectum hurt really bad after the surgery and the Dr said this is because of where the cyst are they have to cut near the rectum and uretha. Just please be aware that if you have this surgery it is very painful and do not be planning on returning to work for several weeks. My doctor told me I would only be down for two days which was not true.

i also had my gland removed and I my Dr gave me the lidocaine jelly but I was to afraid it would burn if I applied it inside the vagina where the stiching is. Can you tell me if you applied it to the outside or the inside where the cyst was removed at?

i have had bartholin cyst now for 5 years since i was 17 it started just from having sex then i had a huge lump the next morning andit grew to the size of a baseball literelly in hours i went to emergency room and they said it was an ingrown hair or i was sticking foreign objects in my vagina?!?!?!? i was so pissed so they lanced it and sent me home. by time i got home i was in soooo much pain i was screaming begging for my parents to call me an ambulance. i went back and the did not cut the right spot so i had to be cut 3 more times! and was admitted into the hospital for over a week because the infection was soo bad. then i found out i was pregnant and got them twice a month it was soooooo painful nothing i have ever experienced worst pain in the WORLD. I would not let them lance it anymore i refused so they called my obgyn and had him come to the emergency room and set up surgery and since i was pregnant the did a spinal tap so i wouldnt be put to sleep. I had a Marsupialization which did not work. then i had them on and on after i had my son i had another marsupialization which failed again. then they tried a word catheter which caused so much pain i could not move a muscle and as i crawled to the bathroom to pee in tears it fell out! another failed attempt! now i have had one for almost 6 months which is the size of a grape its not abcessed its just there it hurts durring sex and sitting but its manageable. my doctors keep telling me they refuse to do the removal of gland because it is hard to find its a blood bath and it will cause long term pain and scarring!! after reading these post i am now semi-convinced that he was right! but still seeking some sort of freedom from this terrible c**p!!! I am out of hope!

Wow, some of these posts are scary. I'm 27 and I had a marsupialization of the cyst 6 days ago. First time having this experience, first surgery. I totally thought it was a sex injury but it got worse and worse each passing day until I was laid up in bed for 3 days with such intense pain that I knew I had to go to the hospital. The surgery was far less painful/scary than laying in bed doing nothing about it.

I'm having the same stabbing pains at the incision site, but it's really not that terrible as long as I can switch positions. Sitting flat has been the most uncomfortable thing since the cyst formed so sitting a little off center helps. I'm assuming this is due to the stitches because it stops when I shift positions. The area also itches which means it's healing. The wound is also larger than I would like, or expected. It's not that it's even that large for having had surgery it's just that it's in an area where I'd rather not have anything abnormal going on. The doctor said it will shrink over time and I am sure it will, but it's disconcerting to have an extra hole in my body right now (it was stitched and left open to drain which sounds gross but isn't that bad). I go back to have it checked soon but the day after the surgery the gauze was taken out. The doctor who did it (my obgyn) said it looked like it was going to heal well.

I was up and walking the evening after the surgery. I took pain medication that day/night but didn't need it after the first 24 hours. I admit flying on a plane two days later was uncomfortable, but not unbearable. I had the airline wheel me around so I wasn't walking excessively, but making sure to still be active (not exerting, just moving) is also important while healing. I personally seem to be healing well so far. There is some discharge which looks like bleeding during the beginning or end of having your period and there has been some fresh blood, but not enough for me to feel overly concerned about it at all.

The surgery itself only took 15 minutes in and out and I slept very well once I was home, on my side (finally!) in very little pain if any at all. Waking up from surgery was scary because I was so relaxed and woke up to pain but the painkillers kicked in quickly and I was able to walk up the stairs to get into bed on my own. I've been taking it easy and walking slowly. I wouldn't go run a marathon or anything and I can't really open the area to look around and see how healing is going without some discomfort but all in all I'd say having the procedure was far less painful an experience than before I had the surgery. I hope it doesn't come back, but at least I feel like I was in good hands and I know that the procedure (although uncomfortable) was not nearly as painful or scary as having done nothing about the cyst for 10 days (I thought I tore a muscle and treated it as such).

A friend once said something along the lines of "Listen to your body" and "If it hurts don't do it." The latter obviously meaning if there is pain there is a problem, but in this case pain may mean that the incision is healing well and the stitches are not longer as needed so they're becoming uncomfortable. Have a doctor check it out. That's always the best way to know what is going on with your body, especially in a place that is hard to see.

dear Zakdogan! I have a similar issue which has been the result of much of suffering. I had 4 bartholin's cysts within a period of 3 months. I had the glad incision done 9 months ago. All was well for about 3-4 months until pain came back. I went to my doctor who couldn't explain the reason to this pain; I went on antibiotics, 2 different types of steroids all with no difference. I am still in pain, it's been forever, it goes in and out but it always hurts to go to the bathroom. Is it similar to what you are describing? Has it gotten better?
