Just wanted to report a (so far!) more positive experience I've had, for those cruising these boards....it's easy to get really freaked out reading about everyone's bad experiences! Just wanted to let you know, it seems it can come along without too much pain or complication....I first noticed my cyst about a year ago, and it grew pretty considerably for a few months to the size of a large cherry. it wasn't causing me any discomfort amazingly, not even with intercourse; it just felt a bit funny sometimes when sitting. Because ofthe size, my GP referred me to an OBGYN to have it dealt with so that it didn't become infected. Being in Canada, it took several months from GP appointment, to OBGYN consult, to procedure (about 9 months) and still no problems with the cyst. I was scheduled to have it marsupialized, which made sense to me rather than simply draining it. i was scared for the procedure and it wasn't comfortable, but I lived through that (he used good local anesthesia, of course). My only issue was that I was told NOTHING about aftercare, recovery time, what to expect...I was able to walk and drive home and everything, but it did hurt and the biggest thing was that it BLED, very considerably, for at least 24 hours. He didn't mention anything abou copious blood and discharge! it was very swollen for a couple days, but really that was reasonable considering surgery and sutures and everything. After 24 hours, the bleeding and discharge started to gradually slow down. I was taking antiinflammatories for 2-3 days, then didn't need them anymore; and using pads (those things suck!) for about 5 or 6 days before i could switch to pantyliners (still a little discharge). I don't know how long it will take to completely heal - now it just feels a bit funny cause of the stitches - I imagine 3-4 weeks. I think i will be ready for intercourse sooner than that, but the stitches need to break down which can take several weeks so I guess I will wait.
So, it doesn't always mean weeks with lots of pain and inability to work! I had my procedure on a Friday, I was glad I wasn't working the saturday but was totally fine at work come monday. From my experience and reading these boards - sounds like it is worthwhile having them marsupialized or catheterized, rather than simply drained!
good luck to all!

I had bartho for 6months and did a surgery in last year on november 2012. My marsupilazation was quick and after 5hours of surgery i can able to go home. And yes it did hurts, but its only hurts for a night after surgery. The recovery was fast, the doctor gave me anthibiotics and healing cream. In the 5day i can feel really good and can work normally, but the doctor told me that better to rest for 2weeks so i did what the doc said. And after 6weeks i had a sex with my hubby and he said that its ok and nothing change. But the problem is i cant feel orgasm . Does anyone feel the same? Is it because the surgery or only my feeling? Thanks for share :)

After 4 years of lancing the bartholin cyst that formed on my left glad I decided to have it removed. First surgery went terrible. Pain was unbearable and I was left closed to crippled mentally and physically. The incision would not close/ heal properly and another cyst formed. I had a second surgery and the same thing happened accept I suffered nerve damage and loss of feeling in some areas. The pain is still unbearable. I have trouble sitting, standing, walking, going to the bathroom, and sex isnt even a possibility. This is what happens when you trust a doctor that does not specialize in this type of area. Women with breast cancer often say the cancer made them feel like less of a woman. I think that feeling is worse for a woman with this issue. Its life changing and people who are not experiencing dont seem to grasp the severity of the pain associated with this cyst nor do they understand the emotional drain. My hearts go out to you ladies.

This is definitely not fair for us. I have been reading this is a surgery meant for a specialist, not an OB GYN!
Has anyone had the gland removed in the UK at all ? I could use an opinion, some women have been cyst-free for 15+ years after the surgery ! I would be happy with at least that !
@ last Guest may I ask which country was that in ? Sounds like the doctor was in a rush :(

So, I just had my first bc and it was a rapid thing. It was very painful though I had racked myself on a babygate 2 days before it got unbareable to walk so I thought that it was from that at first. Friday I got an appointment with my doctor she told me what it was and convinced me through my tears to get it lanced in the office. I was give 3 motrin about 2 mins before they did this and they did not give me anything to numb the area, it was the most painful thing I have ever experianced.I am still draining slightly at this time and do not know if it is normal. I am on antibiotcs and 7.5 mg of hydrocodone. It itches a lot where they cut me. I have also been extreemly sick to my stomach even when I do not take the pain killers. Was just wondering if this is normal.
