I've had this same problem. It occurred after four and a half days of water fasting, and two prep days before that of only raw fruits and vegetables. So, there's our weakened immune system link. I do NOT have herpes. Sorry, Janice. I've experienced the sores on the soft palate before after two or even one day of water fasting, but they were only small bumps on the roof of my mouth and came on at first meal after the fast (breakfast). Though small, they did take a couple days to go away. In this recent case from the extended fast, it's like the whole rear of my mouth erupted with those sores after drinking concentrate apple juice to break the fast. The sores/bumps started showing around day four from burping the gas in my stomach after drinking water. I was super weak and not feeling well. I felt a noticeable difference in the reaction of my mouth from drinking water and drinking the apple juice. The juice made it more inflamed and it was painful. Soon I couldn't speak right because of the roof of my mouth. Then my ears, then my teeth, OUCH. Then one side of my face, the sinus cavity clogged up, my nose on that side stuffed up, and then started running. There was pressure on that side of my face. Mercy, it was crazy! Trying to figure this out, I searched around and also found that the cause may be due to a vitamin deficiency. So, at 1am that night, when I couldn't sleep swallow because of the pain, I went to grab me some Atkins diet drinks (nutritional shakes) to act as a multivitamin and grabbed Alieve liquid gels for anti-inflammatory and pain. The Alieve helped some but I could tell the skin in my mouth was still *reacting* to the liquids I was drinking to replenish my vitamins! Ooouuch! But earlier I'd read on some discussion board somewhere about how one side of your face the sinuses have to do with potassium, and the other side magnesium. I'd been eating bananas since I broke the fast that day and one side of my face was fine - even that side of my mouth. I thought over the previous days and remembered how random muscles in my body had been twitching throughout the day. This is usually due to a deficiency in magnesium. At this I checked all my multi-vitamins and shakes I'd bought for magnesium...practically none. So I left for the store, got some magnesium supplements, popped those and after that I could tell my mouth had stopped *reacting* to the foods and liquids, and now my pain was due simply to my irritating the inflammation by swallowing, etc.. (I will say that at the same time I popped the magnesium supplements I also popped some for Vitamin C. So, an argument for the immune system could be made there. It could also be a conglomeration of both.) Since the reaction stopped, my stratedgy has been to give my throat and mouth a rest so the inflammation can go down. To avoid swallowing, I've spit into a cup and watched movies nonstop to get my mind off of swallowing and the pain. This has really worked. I've also not spoken a word to a soul in almost 3 days because that aggravates the area too (and it hurts!). Right now I'm just waiting for the swelling to go down in the remaining parts of my mouth since it's gone down in much of my mouth. Today and yesterday have been the uvula. Blending my food with a blender has been pleasant during this time. Haven't seen a doctor yet and if this continues to go away, I don't think I'll have to! I hope this helps! Cheers

I would love if anyone could try to tell me what is going on with me, the doctors have no clue. I am 6 months pregnant, have had a headache for four days, burning and pain sensation when I eat or swallow, weakness, swollen tonsils and glands, swollen gums, canker sores, cold sores, bump in my mouth, they hooked me up to an iv and a couple hours later I was dehydrated already, my neck hurts, if I try to turn my neck too far either way it makes my headache worse.

I have similar problems. I have a red and swollen uvula (looks gross), it hurts to swallow, even just saliva (to the point of crying without Tylenol), and I have noticed that there is a small bubble like thing on my right tonsil. I have tonsil stones according to my uncle who has the same problem and some research I have done. I'm getting checked out by the doctor soon but I'll update when I get the chance. <3

I actually have this right now... it was getting alot better... specially yesterday it felt like it was going to go away... But sadly it was my moms bday... and we had hot dogs , cheese burgers, cake...all kinds of food so i was really hungry and couldn't resist. After that the pain got worse lol i guess it was my fault... but after her bday i got back to my diet.. eat soft foods, u can go on a fruit diet to boost your vitamin C, drink lots of water!!! gargle warm water with salt, use a Q-tips dip it in alcohol or water peroxide and apply to the affected area, or you can gargle scope and mix it with alcohol ... remember its just an infection due to weak immune system so your body needs to fight it off. Can cause pain or a fever, when u feel like a fever is going to happen take a Tylenol and relax or sleep it off. b4 going to bed make sure you brush your teeth really good, wat i do b4 i go to bed is i suck on a halls candy.

Many times swollen back of the throat and soft palate is due to acid reflux. Most doctors, especial ear note and throat will recognize this. You can have it without ANY sour taste in your mouth. Food allergies can do this too. Wheat products, which I love, does this to me and so antihistamine will help if I cheat. I have to take an antacid preventer every morning.

I have all the same problems as everyone else and have had them continually for over a year. The feeling like there is something stuck in the back of your throat and you can't get out is the only thing the doctors ever fixed of my problems. That was acid reflux. As for the rest....I'm waiting to see if I have oral cancer.

I, as well am inflicted. It happens to me when I purposely dehydrate myself. I clean high rise windows from a boson chair and can't get off the rope to use the restroom. Never fails. First drink of water (after six hours of an upper body marathon) feels like I swallow glass. Usually lasts less than 24hrs. I also suffer from acid reflux. I had acid come up and inflame the problem so bad once that blood was coming out of my throat. The worst pain ever.

Thank you for putting your age down. I guess wisdom comes with age. I wish other posters would put their age down and a little history.
Im 42 years old. I have had redness and have had a burning sensation in the back of my throat. My tonsil pillars and uvula are red. my tonsils are swollen and I am having them taken out. However, I also have swelling in the pharyngeal wall and its burns when i use something to touch it. Im not sure what I have. antivirals and antibiotics did not help.
im hoping the tonsils have been carrying some type of infection that will go away when removed. good luck to all who have a nasty throat condition.

Hello, I hope all those that have posted here find some relief. I will add my experience here.

My viral illness came on very suddenly, and resulted in very localized pain to my soft palate, the border of the soft palate with the base of my nasal airway, and uvula swelling. am a 34 year old female. On day one I felt general malaise, sinus pressure and sore throat and headache. On day 2, the throat pain was worse, very consistent during the day. The pain was very localized (my soft palate ever it joins with the roof of my nose) and became so bad I went to the doctor that day. The doc did a strep test and I was told I had viral laryngitis. I was given a strong pain reliever (NSAID), corticosteriod to relieve swelling, and a Zpac (antibiotic). On day 2 and 3, I only took ibuprofren consistently during the day (thinking "this is just viral, it'll go away on its own") and found no relief. Taking an antihistamine did not help either. Again, I wrongly thought "since this is viral, it would go away without starting all the prescribed meds". I was VERY wrong.

On the end of day 3, things had worsened. It hurt VERY painfully to swallow. Specifically, had a swollen uvula and soft palate. There were signs of abrasion on my soft palate near looking toasts the back of my throat on either side of my uvula. The uvula and soft palate appeared beet red in contrast to the rest of my mouth, and there was eventually signs of pus behind my uvula in my larynx/throat. It hurt SO much to swallow, that I could not sleep, I could barely take sips of water (is visibly since every swallow) or even sick on a lozenge, the pain was so bad. In addition, over the course of three days, I had a fever two nights, and would wake up in a cold sweat. I had muscle soreness as well. No runny nose or anything, except the constant sensation of a very painful blockage in the back of my soft palate. I had "hot potato" voice, and refrained from speaking as it hurt too much to talk.

After some online research, I decided to see an ear nose and throat (ENT) specialist on day 4. He confirmed my desciption of what everything looked like, and said that things looked worse. It was good I came in for another visit. I was instructed to immediately take ALL meds as prescibed. It would have only gotten worse without the meds.

It is day 6 and I am feeling a bit better after 2 days course of meds. It will be another couple of days (at least) until I am back to normal.

My suggestions for dealing with this:

Take the pain seriously and see your doctor ASAP. to not let anyone minimize the pain. It hurt awfully.

Go to the doctor asap if you have these symtoms!!! Nothing is more important than your health and peace of mind.
Do not try to tough it out as I did (not taking prescriptions) because IT WILL ONLY GET WORSE without medical attention.

DO NOT EAT these things: anything acidic (NO lemon, apple cider vinger), anything spicy (will hurt your throat even though this is a good decongestant), or anything scratchy (like crackers or ckicken). Only very very soft foods or liquids go down the gullet. Nothing too hot either.

I found eating watermelon and creamy chicken soup helped a great deal.

Good luck y'all!
