I would like information on the surgery for the nerve damage that causes paralyzes of the diaphragm.


Hi Dianna - it's a bit of a difficult one to answer as you haven't given any further information about what's happened and what might need doing. But to try and answer your question diaphragmatic paralysis occurs when there is damage to the phrenic nervie which is the nerve that stimulates the diaphragm to contract and relax. When the diaphragm is in this state the sugical procedure to help is called diaphragmatic plication - basically the diaphragm is pulled down and it allow the muscle to move more freely and help breathing. There are new procedures that can make this a more simple technique but it depends on the circumstances. Hope that helps.
