ok a few things first. Do you snor? If so go and have a sleep test done asap. Most people that have sleep apnia dont know they stop breathing all night long. For instance my self i stopped breathing 156 times per night . So what happens is the next day i yawn , iam tired i cant get full breaths. Please see if you snor that could be the whole problem. I wear a breathing machine at night and it solved it all! also check your posture all day long do not huntch over stand tall. finally blood pressure , check make sure it not high. If so change your diet and see a doctor for a beta blocker. I have throown alot at you but after suffering for as many years as i have I DONT WANT YOU TO !! GOD BLESS YOU AND GOOD LUCK. LET ME KNWO IF ANY OF THIS HELPS YOU . I PRAY IT DOES.

After having the same symptoms for the last 15 years and finally ending up in the hospital with heart arythmia, I've been through a battery of tests. The result: I have a paralyzed diaphragm. You should mention or suggest a sniff test to your doctor.

I suffered from the same symptoms, chronic difficulty breathing , chest tightness etc for 14 years, up until just 3 weeks ago this year 2013. I went through similar tests with doctors telling me that I was fine and there was nothing wrong with me. I am a 27 year old female and I am suffering from constant shortness of breath (I am not overweight and have no past history of asthma).  It all started in January (a little over 7 months ago).  I was fully exerting myself by running all the way through an airport and carrying my luggage; when I was finished running, I wheezing for quite a while (which doesn't ever happen to me when I work out).  I had a cough for several days after that and thought it was all related to running through the airport.  The doctor did a strep test that came back negative and also prescribed some anxiety meds for a while that also did not work.  The cough went away, but the shortness of breath remained constant.  I feel short of breath all the time--even as I am sitting and doing nothing.  I had a pulmonary function test completed that came back normal.  The doctor said though it was normal, I was almost close to the range where asthma sufferers would be, so she said I probably had asthma.  She put me on a steroid inhaler to help with the 'asthma' about 4 months ago, and it has not helped at all with the shortness of breath that I feel.  Is anyone experiencing anything like this?  Do you have any advice or suggestions?Thank you!

I don't become nervous or panic but still I am always uncomfortable for the past 1 year.

I TOTALLY understand what all of you are going through!! I have been getting these "Shortness of Breath Attacks" for over 30yrs!! Not being able to take a deep satisfying breath is sheer torture! Not knowing when or where you will be "attacked" is insane. I have been to lots of physicions; the allergist dr. said its allergies, the shrink dr. said it's stress or a panic attack, stomach dr said its your hernia or acid -refux, lung specialist dr said its the extra weight on your stomach, family dr. Said its sleep apnea.....

I hate how western medicine "separates" the human body! That's why I kept getting different diagnosis from different dr.s that are specialists on different areas of the body! I'm just ONE BODY!! Since all of these dr.s don't talk to each other, none of them ACTUAL pinpoint the actual problem!!

My theory is this; ITS A COMBINATION OF ALL OF THESE THINGS! Here's an example; let's say you already have a hernia and/or acid reflux desease. Now all of a sudden you have an allergic response to something, (which could be anything since allergies can develope anytime even if you weren't allergic to something before!), this allergic response, coupled with the fact that your lungs are already compromised because of the hernia and/or acid reflux, causes you to become a little short of breath. This causes you to tense up with stress and/or panic, which then causes you to have even more shortness of breath!

i started my "recovery" from this nightmare by first taking some benedryl at the first sign of any shortness of breath. The benedryl stopped the allergic reaction & also relaxed my muscles because thats a side effect of benedryl. If you can figure out whats causing your allergic reaction, that is the best solution! (But usually, that is hard to do), the 2nd thing I did was some major dusting & cleaning in my house! I than starting bathing my pets every week. Lastly, I hit the treadmill & swapped out my bacon cheeseburgers for some salads to get the extra weight off my stomach that was compressing my lungs!

I still have my hernia which still causes me to have acid-refux/gerd, which still causes me to have occasional shortness of breath, Because I haven't decided on if I want to get the surgery to fix it or not, But as soon as any sign of shortness of breath starts, I take the benedryl and I'm able to function pretty good!

well that's my story! Hope it helps someone!

I would like to join this discussion since my son-13 years old is experiencing similar problems . He is a very athletic and he was successful with his sports . Until 1 month ago he was perfect. I noticed he had a growth spurt and I was thinking that this issue would be because this transitional shift through puberty but this discussion stream shows similar problems for different situations, ages and people . Like others in this discussion his tests ( blood, x-ray, ECG) are ok and doctors prescribed inhalers for short and long term but they don't seem to work. I noticed some pointers in the discussion for the acid reflux and stomach related concerns. I am wondering if anyone had a success on diagnosing and treating his/her problem. I appreciate your feedbacks.

Hey guys, everything you guys are describing sounds like what I went through for years with now answer, I started drinking apple cider vinegar water in the morning along with 1tablespoon of natural Nordic fish oil in the morning after a meal and one at night. I also use to take benedryl before I found out about fish oils, you can also try putting a teaspoon of baking soda and a teaspoon of salt in a glass with some lemon and gargling it, I haven't quite figured out if I suffer from asthma or silent airway reflux, but this system seems to work for me, the benedryl was the biggest help before I found out about anything, try taking benedryl start with one pill then go to two

Just reading some comments. My daughter is 14 years old and for the past couple of years I notice that she has difficulty breathing like she was a kid that was out of shape. She plays soccer , basketball, and volleyball. Looking at her play I notice that she was out of breath compared to the other kids playing. My mother in law was recently diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension so being that it is hereditary I brought her to the doctors. After an echocardiogram her levels were in the moderate levels, we are waiting to see a specialist for a confirmation on the diagnosis. I guess my point to my story is that no one knows yourself or your kids better than you do . If you feel that something is wrong there probably is.

Have you been tested for Lymes disease. Look up a parasitic infection from Lyme's called babesia. It is a co infection with Lyme that can present shortness of breath and a myriad of other weird symptoms you are describing. However if you go for a regular Lyme's test they typically don't test for babesia so seek a Lyme Dr. Have you ever been to the Hudson valley region of NY? This particular tick carrying Lyme babesia is prevalent there. Anyway weird air hunger and shortness of breath are some symptoms of this. Has to do with the parasite living on the red blood cells.
