has anyone here gotten a pinguecula removed from dr. hovanesian? i am wondering whether to get him to do it or dr. gulani in florida. the thing is, hovanesian is an hour drive while gulani is a 6 hour flight away. given the choice, i would choice gulani, but hovanesian is much closer to where i live. has anyone had success with hovanesian> :-(

I called both places. I have 2 pings in each eye. Harvard eye wants just under 4k per eye. The person I talked to at Gulani Vision said it would be more than double what Harvard Eye quoted. That being said, I would go with Gulani if money was not an issue. It appears the next day your eye is white again at Gulani Vision. Only difference I can figure out is, Gulani uses human placenta and Hovanesian uses tissue from behind your eyeball.

thank you for replying. it was helpful

anyway, i have made up my mind to go to gulani. i want that part of my eye to be white, and he is much better at that than hovanesian. also, i have read on this site about people who went to hovanesian who got their eyelids messed up (from him going under that part) and how there's scarring. gulani also seems like a much more sincere person who has better documentation of pinguecula removal. i only found pytergium for hovanesian, for one. the pics he posted were also a 1000x worse.

i will go to gulani... hopefully someday soon :'(

oh and i may i ask, how big are your pings? i just wonder how large they have to be for gulani to be willing to remove them. i think my ping is maybe a little less than half a centimeter in diameter, and it hasn't grown for as long as i can remember. i don't even remember when i got this ping at all. it has never grown since i've been aware of it. i wonder if that will help decrease the recurrence rate. also, are you in the sun a lot? i used to play a lot of basketball and be in the sun all the time, which i can't help but assume contributed to this ping. neither of my parents have pings

I have no idea how long I have had them. I am 39, and I asked my eye doctor about 10 years ago why my eyes werent as clear as they once were? He said I was over wearing my lenses. Several years later I went to a new eye doctor, and he said that I have a condition that normally is only seen in very warm climates, rarely in friggin Ohio. Like I said, I have 4 pings, although only one of them is very noticeable. I dont even mind so much the yellow as much as the redness that sometimes(at least for me)goes along with this condition.

I have no idea how large they are, only know that there are days they drive me crazy. Not only cosmetically, but truly irritating my eye. My parents dont have them either. I'm no doctor, but I think I created the perfect storm for this condition. Over wearing my contact lenses + dry eye + never wearing shades.

Hopefully I'll be going overseas soon and will be making a boat load of tax free money. I plan on using some of it when I return to get this corrected by Dr. Gulani. The reoccurence rate has me concerned, because I do question whether or not the less than 1% is accurate. Call me a skeptic, but what other choice do we have? Good luck

is it windy in ohio? i have read that that can contribute to pinguecula growth. that and dry eye, which i sort of have too. i have seen gulani's pictures, and the end result is very very white. the fact that they bother you physically might be reason for your health care (or something?) to partially cover maybe, because it's not only just aesthetics. i don't wear sun glasses either. i really do think gulani and hirst are the best options. however, hirst is located in australia (brisbane) and is far too far away for me. plus, i doubt his results beat gulani's. good luck to you too. even though the pinguecula does not really bother me physically, i am always self conscious when i talk to to other people because i have this patch of yellow next to my eye.

i have been doing some research on the Ibrite system in LA. There are tons of before and after pics, and the results are quite amazing. Cost appears to be about 5 large per eye AND they do both eyes on the same day. Sounds like 2 weeks before your eyes are white again post op, and of course several weeks after that until you are completely healed. Maybe something for you to check out.

The cost of having these irritations removed has grown significantly. I am 29 years old and have had these growths for only a year and a half. About two months after being diagnosed with this, I contacted Harvard Eye about the possibility of surgery and was told at the time that the average cost per eye is about $2200. I still have the email, it's dated August 2009. I can't believe only 18 months later, the cost has gone up to under 4k.

Same for Dr. Gulani. I mean, other threads I read going back less than two years ago quote prices like $4500 + anasthesia. It is so discouraging to learn that he now charges over 8k. I mean, what has contributed to the astronomical increase, over such a short period of time? :-(

I was diagnosed with pingueculae (both L and R) fall of 2010.  I had ping removal surgery last month, and my insurance covered it at 90%.  IMO, Guliani is a bit of a celebrity doctor; I showed his website and blog to my doctor and she was unimpressed.  Do more research; my doc has 25 years of experience in ping/pterg removal, and has had no recurrences yet.  And she accepts insurance.  I don't understand why doctors wouldn't accept insurance.  I'm also a part of a health-needs sharing co-op, and they also cover ping/pterg surgery.  I did have complications in my surgery (the first of my doc's patients to ever have this problem), but even with the complication, I am still expected to heal well.  Right eye one month post-op looks about 75% normal -- no one would notice unless I pointed it out.  Of course it looks worse to me, because I look at it up close and pay attention to it.  Left eye, the problem eye, is two weeks post op.  Still very red where graft is.  No pain now, though I had to take Vicodin and mild sedatives right after the surgery.

Did you end up getting the surgery? Did your insurance cover it? If so, what insurance. Also, tell me about your experience.

I have had pingueculae in both eyes for decades. Eye Dr.'s told me there is nothing to be done for them(as recently as 1 month ago). I am embarrassed by their appearance. Please share your eye Doctor's name with me. Thanks.

There are doctors out there willing to help. I recommend Dr. Schaeffer Tseng in Miami, who I have not yet been to but when I do save up enough money to have the surgery, I plan on going to him.

I got 2 pings removed by Dr. Gulani in Jacksonville. Very expensive, but my eyes are white now! My eyes look fine except for the red corners are inflamed still and need to heal.

Are you referring to Dr Hirst in Brisbane? I have a large ping that appeared overnight raised the size a little larger than an erasor on a pencil. If so can you tell me what the cost was? Hope everything has healed well. I have been to eye Dr. and they don't want to touch it. It is overlapping slightly to my colored part of my eye.
