possible metal allergies and reactions as pertaining to earrings and jewlery

hi i am one of the six ppl in canada that is allergic to all metals. i just want to let u know that life is still possible with this allergy with new advancements and a few home remedies life is quite normal. its been 3 years since i was diacnoesed and im still kicking. i play junior c hockey and live a full life. the only difference is when my allergies affect me they get really bad ive had only two close calls to loseing my life but now its controled if any questions ill be happy to answer.

I wore cheap-o earrings for years with no problems before some sort of metal allergy kicked in. So annoying! I pretty much gave up and stopped wearing earrings for several years. A couple years ago I heard about earrings made from titanium and niobium (two pure, non-allergic metals) and gave them a try. To my surprise, they worked!! I am so happy to be able to wear earrings again! I haven’t had much luck finding titanium and niobium earrings in stores, but I’ve ordered several pair of handmade earrings  ***this post is edited by moderator *** *** web

I also was allergic to all metals but 18+ carat gold! Even when I was younger I struggled with plastic watches. After one week of wearing metal-plastic I use to get red pimples, itchy pink spots under the watch and it would get infected etc etc until last year I came across Kenneth cole watches. They are not only fashionable they also give no itchiness. It was like magic! I purchased a metal one (gold) on ebay and had no problem wearing it for months on going. I was so happy I even bought another metal one from Kenneth cole (silver). I wear that now and I am so thrilled! Kenneth cole watches are all hypoallergenic but it must be made of something that obviously other watches didn't have, because I had tried all brands. Hope that helps :-)

well im allergic to everything besides yellow gold(even plastic and silver) i would really suggest buying something cheap and trying it on for a day and if nothing then you know shes not allergic to it. thats what i do.

I was allergic to every metal I'd ever touched for more than an hour or so, but I finally found out that titanium is hypoallergenic.  My wedding ring is titanium and I haven't had even the slightest problem despite wearing it every day for a year.  After 30 years, it was an amazing feeling being able to touch a metal for more than a few minutes.

I make jewelry for people with nickel (and metal) allergies. Most people are allergic to nickel which can be found in a lot of fashion jewelry. Making the switch to Sterling Silver will help a lot of people, but this is still an alloy. Even gold is an alloy, okay the higher the Karat the better, but only 24 kt is free from other metals. Unfortunately 24 kt can’t be made into jewelry, because it is too soft. Jewelry can be plated with 24 kt gold, but this can wear of or chip of and the skin will still get in touch with the under laying metal. Surgical Steel is often recommended, but this does contain a small amount of nickel and can’t be called hypoallergenic. It was never invented for the jewelry industry but for making surgical tools at low cost which didn’t react to fluids or air and rust and could be sterilized. I know of only 2 metals that can be worn in it pure form as jewelry and that is Niobium and Titanium. Because they are used in there pure form they are not alloyed with metals that can cause allergies, like nickel. These are the two metals I work with and feel so confident about that I guarantee my customers a 60 days money back guarantee, if they do have an allergic reaction. Until now (400 sales) later I haven’t had anyone with an allergic reaction. Titanium is more and more common in the brick and mortar jewelry stores around the world. And I’m sure if you have a good look around the internet you will be able to find yourself a big variety of factory and handmade jewelry that you won’t have an allergic reaction to. I too have an allergy to the metals from earrings (including gold) and belts. I find that the cheap way to find earring for your daughter that won't upset this allergy is to purchase hypoallergenic earrings from jewelry stores (i.e. Claire's). 

Personally, when I purchase earrings (or get earrings as a gift) that are not hypoallergenic, I coat the hook (or the part that actually goes through the ear) with a lacquer (A clear liquid that is typically used for wood finishing). It was a simple solution since I had some in the house, it kept the metal from touching my skin and I didn't have to pay for other earrings or throw them out.

I have similar problems with jewelry... and I have since I was quite young. unfortunately the only thing I could do when I was young and uninformed was wear that awesome silver, gold, surgical steel, or cheap whatever material jewelry until it bothered me.

After exploring the world of piercings... the only jewelry that doesn't irritate me is titanium, white gold and of coarse any nonmetal items (wood, marble, fabrics and so on...).

So honesty the best advise I can give you would be to go to an actual piercer or tattoo parlor that does professional piercings. A good shop will be well informed on their product, as well as all the allergies involved and the piercers are certified in their craft as professionals in their field.

I hope this helps! Don't be nervous about taking your child into a place like a tattoo parlor... find an upstanding and professional parlor and it will be as comfortable as those less informed jewelry shops.

I can't wear any kind of earing. I wasn't like this until I was about 14 years old. Recently my older cousin began selling Lia Sophia jewelry. They have hyper allergenic non metal based jewelry and I can actually wear their earrings without any kind of allergic reaction :)

Try Lia Sophia earrings, they sell non metal based jewelry for those of us who have trouble finding earrings that don't make my ears develop painful knots wherever the metal touched. I even tried clip on earrings and they didn't work. Lia Sophia earrings on the other hand didn't have any problems :)

I, too, am one allergic to EVERYTHING!!!  Years ago some drug stores used to sell NICE nylon post earrings (the ONLY type I could wear!).  I gave up wearing earrings (and watches), but as of late have been in search for earrings w/nylon posts again.  No such luck.  I suggest as to what I am going to do - first look into Michaels and other Craft stores for the nylon posts and backs and w/a glue gun create my own, (nice items for the earrings face-side as well).  If not, google either nylon post earrings or plastic post earrings to find the posts and backs and make Ur own , I love cameos and have made many neclases on rope w/them.  For little girls U can buy every color plastic (or nylon) post earrings that are already made and very inexpensive. PS, I think I also saw the starters (or self piercers (less painful than professional, which I`ll also need as out of seven only one piercing is open.  Hope this helps and have fun.

I have the same problem .I had a knee transplant and it was plastic and titanium .So far no problem so I am going to try a titanium chain.I would really like to wear a little jewelry s I hope this works.

Try earrings that have the earwires made from Niobuin wire. Niobium is an "inert & non-reactive" wire. I, too, am terribly allergic to any earring with standard earwires. I searched all over and finally found earrings made with Niobium ear wires. That solved my problem completely! Just Google 'Niobium Ear Wires'.

Try earrings that have ear wires made with Niobium wire, an "inert and non-reactive" wire. It saved me from red, itchy ear lobes. Hope this helps.
