I have been sick for a couple of weeks. I went the the doc who said I had an ear infection (both sides), sinus infection , and the beginnings of phneumonia.
She treated me with an albuteral inhaler and zmax antibiotics. This was Wed. the 2nd and I got he meds on Thurs. I went back to her on Mond. in worse shape. She started me on avalox and said to call her this last Thurs. if I was no better. I ended up going to see her again because I was no better. She started me on prednisone which I started (4 a day the 3 days and so on) yesterday. She took xrays Mond when I had seen her but not this last time.
When I went back to her on Thurs. my ribs on the right side hurt horribly. I thought at first it was the coughing but now I'm wondering if I have damaged them with all the coughing whether bruised or fractured.
The pain is severe stabbing pain. The worst spot is under the lower part of my breast and goes around my side. It's not above that or below that just in that area around my side. It hurts to the point of tears when I cough. I can't beath (unless I use my stomach (hard to explain)) bend, twist, lift my arm above my head, etc because of the pain.
Is it possible to fracture ribs just coughing? The coughing at times left me unable to breath.
I'm on my second day of prednisone @ 4x daily and my 5th day of avalox (out of 7 day course) with so far no improvement.
I thought about going to the er and have them check me out but I'm a single mother of 2 kids and I take care of my mother. If I end up in the hospital their out of luck. Should I take that chance or should I just give the prednisone a few more days then contact my regular doc.
Is there anything I can do to help ease the pain in my ribs? I'm taking e.s. tylenol but it isn't touching it. Neither is the cough syrup/codiene the doc gave me for night. I'm putting icy/hot on it which helps a little bit until I move again. I sleep sitting up to help avoid the coughing fits. That helps a little bit but the coughing fits have me in tears over in pain. The phlegm is yellow colored if that helps. No injury to the area just the coughing.
