I had a cortizone shot in my hip Thursday morning. By Friday night I was in bed moaning in pain. Every muscle in my body hurt. It hurt to move. My hands and lower arms went completely numb when I went to sleep for an hour. It took about 20 minites of moving my hands and fingers to feel them again. My hands were swollen and I could not touch my normally thin fingers to my palm. The muscles in my wrists fingers and everywhere just hurt so bad. Then I got up to go to the restroom, I could hardly make it to the restroom without passing out and I fell once. I could not lift my arm to get a glass out of the kitchen cupboard. I yelled in pain just to try to lift my arm. I ended up getting a glass out of the dishwasher. I tossed and turned in the worst pain that my whole body has ever been inflicted with in my whole life. Oh wait no I guess labor pains were similar. Then in the morning, I got in my car to drive myself to urgent care. I could not turn the car key. I winced in pain and had to use two hands. I could hardly drive. I made it to the Urgent Care had to wait twp hours and then the doctor told me I was having several myopathys. He told me to take a week supply of prednisone and motrin. I was fine the next day. Just a little weak. Still having some shortness of breath. Anyone know why I had such a severe reaction to the shot?

The same thing happened to me one week ago. I got my first cortizone shot in my knee. The shot itself went well and I had a pre shot of zylocaine so it wouldn't be too painful. As I left the office my knee started to stiffen a bit and it increased over several hours. My whole leg and foot swelled up and then every joint in my body was extremely painful. My joints are always painful and I have fibromyalgia but this pain was really overwhelming. After about four hours, muscle weakness set in to the point that, like you, I could barely move. I inderstand now what people with MS or a muscle wasting disease experience. I took vicodin and benadryl. After 12 hours, the worst was over but it took 24 hours to feel human again. The doctor seemed to think it was an allergy to the zylocaine but I have never had any problem with lidocaine. My gut feeling is that the reaction was to the cortizone shot or some component of the carrier fluid or preservative.
