I am 28 years old, in a long term relationship and have always enjoyed an active sex-life
About a year ago,i started to experience severe pain during sex with my boyfriend, we had been together three years at that stage and it had never hurt before. as soon as he penetrated me it felt like someone stabbed me in the lower right side of my abdomen, i mean so painful we had to stop straight away, and then for about half an hour afterwards i felt like i had menstrual cramps. this happened every time, especially if it went in deep, and so we eventually stopped having sex. when i masturbated(clitoral, no penetration) as soon as i came i got the same severe menstrual cramp-like symptoms. obviously this problem is affecting my relationship as we rarely have sex now, but also i'm extremely worried because the pain during sex really was sooo bad, and it felt as though he was hitting off something really swolen and inflamed, but over on the right of my abdomen. really wierd.
Anyone experienced anything similar? any advice?

Nire,
The same thing happened to me today. I am a 24 year old female with a histoy of ovarian cysts. Other than said cystal development I am otherwise healthy. Today I was enjoying a bout of rather rough sex with my boyfriend of 1 year when I suddenly experienced a sharp pain in my lower abdomen (I probably should insert here that he is the only sexual partner I have ever had). We too had to stop having sex due to my extreme pain. This feeling still persists now, more than 3 hours after we stopped having intercourse.
I am extremely nervous that this is something serious . My boyfriend insists that he must have just hit my cervix too hard but I still worry that it could be a sign of endomitriosis or something just as dangerous. If I find some useful information I will be sure to pass it along.
GOOD LUCK!

Hi there,
I had a very normal sex life up until after my daughter was born.. Between my daughter and my son, I had the same issue.. occasionally I would be fine, but most of the time it was extremely painful, and afterwards even more so, and would usualy last anywhere up to 48 hrs after.
Since having my son, I think it has maybe gotten a little worse.. I was absolutely fed up with the situation - thinking I was the only 23 year old with a crappy sex life.. but they did tests... they also did ultrasounds.. internal and abdominal... but they couldn't see anything wrong.
The one thing you've said is that it hurts on one side... this is pretty interesting as I get the pain mostly on the left side..
whilst having the internal ultrasound, she put pressure on the left ovary and the pain was there... and then left once the pressure was gone.
My theory is that even though they may not see something, it might still be something to do with the ovary.. I'm going to go to a specialist to see if they can look into it further as the doctor I recently saw, tried to tell me there was pretty much nothing they could do... and that we should just try and "find a more comfortable position".... haha!!!!
Like you said, its not necessarily the penetration that causes this pain, it's usually when climax is reached.. which is muscular... could be a muscle thing and sensetive ovaries.. or something wrong with the ovary and when in climax, the pressure is put on the problem
If that makes sense.. I was hoping to find someone who had an answer, but unfortunately this is one that might not have a clear answer.
you're message was from a while back - I hope you found out a cure to this problem - I totally sympathize as I'm 24 now, and I've had this for almost 5 years.

Ive been having the same problem, ive had a history of abdominal pain that they can never seem to find out what is wrong.
I had an ectopic pregancny 2 years ago and am slightly worried my pain is related to that. I have a new partner now and the pain is embarrassing and last night i screamed (not in a good way) during climax and had to stop straight away, im sitting here in work now still very much in pain, mostly on my right side. Its happened before with my last partner and at times ive had to take time off work as i cant move from one side to another. Its getting very frustrating, After reading this and the difference between the stories and it being on either the right or left side im convinced it is to do with our ovaries.
Going to make a doctors appointment and see what i can find out, ill report back if i find out anything interesting. I know these sites are helpful, its interesting to hear that other people have similar problems, because lets face it, doctors arent too helpful these days.
I was once told recently '' all women have that pain'' by a very old and rude male doctor. I would like to put him in our shoes, just for one day. pfft

If your doctor told you that, see a new doctor. There's no reason to see a doctor who holds such archaic and chauvanistic rules. Does that help you out? WHat do you think?

Hi there, I've got the same problem, maybe I could help you out. I used to eat before having sex but I didn't notice that that was the problem who caused the pain untill one day I haven't eaten almost anything the whole day and got in the mood with my boyfriend and we just had sex, and I noticed that I was able to have sex any way I wanted to without getting the awful pain I usually get and then I realized it's because I hadn't eaten anything before the sex. So you could try this out. Let me know if it helped;)

hi all,
i started having similar pain a few years ago after i had my appendix removed (i don't think it happened before). it only happened sometimes, but now it happens almost every other time i have sex in basically every position except missionary. the pain is very sharp and usually only on my left side, and feels like he's hitting something also so that we ahve to stop. the pain doesn't last for very long afterwards though. i got a pelvic ultrasoun when i first started getting the pain and nothing unusual came up. any questions i had, or strange things that the doctors felt externally they more or less dismissed, so i'm hesitant to go back to a dr. had anyone heard back anything?
i've had the same experience with not eating as much and there being less or no pain...maybe it's poor digestion? everything important is around that area after all. i don't know if that makes sense...
i don't suggest not eating as much because you want to have sex though!! there are whole and healthy solutions to everything i hope, i just wish the dr's some of us have seen were more responsive!
there are all sorts of ligaments and nerves that run down either side of us too...i guess i don't want to think it could just be ovarian cycsts because women "just get ovarian cysts" and it seems there'd not be much to do about it. good luck everyone, please report back!

I've had the same exact problem!! I've had numerous tests done as well and I can't seem to find any probable cause. My ultrasound did not pick up any cysts or fibroids whatsoever. My pap smear also came back normal! I had a prolactin level test ran just to make sure I didn't have a pituitary tumor causing my hormones to be out of whack, but that also came back normal. On top of the right sided abdominal pain, I've also missed my last 2-3 periods! I'm getting frustrated bouncing from doctor to doctor looking for a cause. I'm also in med school myself and am quite baffled by whats going on. If anyone finds an answer to this mystery..please let me know!

i have also had this problem and have been to visit doctors 3 times!!
it started when i began seeing my long-term boyfriend, it hadnt happened before
i sometimes started bleeding during or after sex, at first i thought i'd just started my period, but it turned out this wasn't always the case.
i have the same stabbing feeling on the right side of my womb, sometimes i can feel that its hitting something inside me that really hurts.
the first doctor i saw said it was an infection, so i was put on two types of antibiotics, on the last day i ended up having an allergic reaction where my labia swoll up 3 times its normal size!! second time i was very hesitant, but i heard back and they said everything was fine. the problem persisted and i went to a gum clinic, they said everything seemed normal apart from visible veins on the wall of my womb and to get an appointment with a gynecologist which im yet to do as i have felt let down by doctors and am quite afraid of what it might be. i've also always had very painful periods and used to have to miss a week off school every time they came around, so this could be a component. if anyone has any more information, please let me know, i'm surprised there are so many of us and how many of us doctors have let down. i will let you know if i find anything further also :-)

I am eighteen years old and often I find that my lower, right abdomen seems swollen and tender to the touch. When I have normal sex, nothing hurts, but when there's no penetration (clitoral) I begin to have serious cramps at climax. My doctor said it might be constipation?? But... I have another appointment - post if there's any kind of break through.

I have had the same problem for the first time, it hurt really bad to have sex every time he penetrated, but it didn't hurt to climax.
Ii wasn't the food so I'm hoping it's a pregnancy!

I am 42 and am having a similar pain. It only occurs during orgasm, which is usually occurs with clitoral stimulation--I have no pain at penetration. I have had 2 kids delivered by c section. I did not notice this pain before my pregnancies. My pain feels more like a muscular cramp in my lower abdominals and goes away when I try to relax the muscles--much like any other muscle cramp. Luckily, it doesn't continue unless I tense those muscles again. Stretching seems to help. Since it's not debilitating, I haven't consulted a gyn but will ask about it at my next annual. Will report back on whatever I learn.
Good luck all. So disappointing that so many are experiencing pain and there are no real answers.

Exactly the same here, 2 kids, 37 as with the post on 17th. I have severe high blood pressure around the same time and wonder if at all related?
