It has almost been a year since I have been smelling cigarette smoke off and on. Sometimes it is so strong it chokes me. I don't smoke, and hate cigarettes. I have tried using different shampoos, soaps. I am even in a new apartment. I have used nasal corticosteroids, and take a claritin daily. Been to the ENT and nothing. I think he thought I was crazy. CT sinuses showed inflamation, and CT of brain was fine. I have taken amoxicillan and a round of omnicef. I also smell rotting garbage a times, and a sulfur smell. I have these smells at work, home, etc. Others don't smell it. I cannot pinpoint the cause or trigger. A psychiatrist suggested the Zoloft I take, 175mg daily, could rarely cause seizures that cause olfactory disturbances. My counselor says the smells are a somaticization of stressors. I don't know. All I know is I am tired of smelling this, and wish it would go away.

Whenever I drink peppermint tea, apple juice or do a liver cleanse the smell and icky gut feeling go away. Hope this helps. I know it's really annoying.

This is sad, many of us with the same symptoms and no one with an answer. I have been smelling smoke on and off for the past year, have had many sinus infections and one sinus surgery. Then I was told I had an absess in the root of my tooth, which deteriorated the bone, had surgery, tooth pulled, bone grafts and for a while the smell went away. NOW its BACK and I have burning between my eyes and headaches and visual disturbances. I am changing my PCP for someone at Cleveland Clinic, if I get an answer, I'll write about it. If anyone else has an answer, HELP!

I'm a usually healthy 42 year old male and this cigarette smell thing just started a couple days ago. I've always had such a good sense of smell and now it constantly smells like I'm in a smoky bar. Haven't done anything unusual or gotten sick. Will check with my doctor to see if he's heard of this.

Hi, i've also been smelling smoke for a while now, as well as tasting it and having stinging eyes and when it feels like it's catching in the back of your throat its awful and it makes me cough so much.
After reading the previous posts, I can't find anything to match with, as I am not taking any vitamins or any other type of medicine that has been mentioned EXCEPT.... I am using a Preventative Inhaler as my Doctor is no sure whether I am Asthmatic or not.... I do know that whenever I smell the smoke, it just causes a coughing fit. Are any of you previous posters using any Asthma medication?
My Doctor has just dismissed my complaint as he's never heard of it and he said that there is no treatment for anything like i've described. makes you feel like they think you're making it up.
Anyway, thanks to this forum, I know i'm not going loopy, other people are having the same problem and I now have a couple of things to try and help alleviate the smell.. Thank you :-)

Hi, I too have been smelling smoke, how many post started like this. I am not sure what the problem is...mine started after a radioactive iodine tx for thyroid cancer. It was terrible, I was locked in my bedroom to protect the family and I smelled smoke every minute w/o a break. I blamed the neighbors and ventilation...was going nuts. It comes and goes since July 08 but mostly comes. When I went to France it was gone for two weeks, after a few weeks back I had it again. I don't smell it outside but everywhere inside. I think the determined daughter has something and definitely deserves a HUGE present for X-mas! I am trying that as soon as I get to the store...not sure how to flush but maybe they will help me. Oh yes there is no central air/heat where we were in France to dry me out. Thanks and good luck!

Thank God, I found this site. I really thought I was going crazy. My problem began a about 3 weeks ago when it started getting cold here. I thought I was smelling the neighbors fireplaces, but I don't smell it when I go outside. I don't have a sinus infection. Like some of you I have begun taking vitamins recently. I have also taken Effexor, Ambien and Naproxin/Aleve but I don't think that's the problem, unless I've developed an allergy to one of them. I have also have been having severe headaches and vision distubance since the smoke smell began. I plan to try the warm nasal flush a few times a day and the moisturising gel as soon as I can get to the pharmacy. Thanks so much for all the info. I'm so glad I not going crazy and surely hope this works. I will let y'all know.

Thank you so much, Determined Daughter; I was smelling smoke, mostly indoors (home, car, bus), but when I started using a vaporizer, at your suggestion, it stopped. I didn't think it would work but I tried it anyway; much to my pleasant surprise, it did work. :-) Marlene

I'm smelling smoke too - in Australia! - its driving me crazy. I don't smoke and no one else I know does either. It started on Saturday and won't go away. It also sticks in the back of my throat. I have started taking a weight loss pill recently by Blackmores so perhaps that's something to do with it. I might stop taking them and seeing what happens and let you know how I go. I'm sick of this smell that no one else can smell - smeall it at home, outside, in the car, at the shops, lying in bed - I started to think I have a smoking ghost hanging around me - thank god I'm not the only one with this problem - my husband thinks I'm going mad!

Me to...smell has been on/off since 2006.
Since I moved in my new house (Aug 2007), it happens once every 4-6 months for almost 3 weeks.
I've so far been prescribed:
Pills: Avelox, Biaxin, Cloxacilline & Penicilin (I found the hard way I was allergic...)
Nasal Spray: Nasonex, Flonase & Flixonase (equivalent of Flonase while I was in Europe) & off the counter spray (Rhinaris Pump Spray & SinoMarin)
It does help for at least 3 months (once the treatment is done), but then it comes back...again..
Eachtime I go back to my Dr., he thinks I'm a nut-case...maybe I am..lol

I have had issues with my sinuses for several years now. I have had sinus infections often due to nasal polyps. In 2006 I had surgery to remove them, but the relief only lasted a few months. I have learned that the polyps have already grown back, although not as bad as before. I am considering another surgery.
I have often used the nasal spray AFRIN on the days where my nasal passages are just so swollen and blocked that I can't breath through them at all.
I may be wrong, but I think that constant smell of smoke is related to taking the afrin, or products similar. It works like a charm to open the sinuses up, but maybe it is doing some sort of damage at the same time. I didn't have this smoky smell inside my head for the first few years of my sinus issues. I feel like every time I use the Afrin, this smell starts soon after and lasts longer each time.
I havent had to use it in three or four weeks, but last time I needed it I used it daily for 4 or 5 days straight, and since then the cigarette smell has been pretty much constant.
I know many of you have been on several medications for sinus. The reason I single out Afrin is that I don't use anything else - pill or spray. I have been on prescribed antibiotics occasionally for sinus infection, oral corticosteroids once for the polyps, and have used saline spray now and then.
Hope this helps some of you.

I am having the same problem for about a month or more. But also, for the past 3 months, I've had incessant eye tearing. huge tears rolling down my face. I was so distracted by that, that I didn't really focus on the smokey smell. The opthamologist told me I have "dry eyes." Now I am on restasys for the eyes, as well as Lotemax, and fish oil, and Flaxseed oil. The tearing has just about subsided, but now the smell of cigarettes is driving me mad. Has anybody else had the eye tearing piece of this? Maybe there's some connection re dryness?

Hey, this was great info! I have always used Dove soap and recently changed, and it all makes sense. For over 30 years I have used Dove soap, and recently changed to another. I will keep you all posted on the outcome of changing back. :-D

I have been going nuts. The smell of smoke drives out every other smell. I am glad that I am not the only one. My family thinks I am nuts. I smell it at home, in my car and at work and I have never been a smoker. My family all smoked, but I never have. I swore my son was smoking one day -when I could see that he was not. If anyone figures out what is going on with us, please, please post it. I am starting to think I have some kind of brain malfunction.
