OMG !! I thought i was going crazy. I also have been smelling cigarette smoke in my home, car, outside ( i do not smoke) when no one else is around for the last two weeks. i do not take anything for nasal infections but i have been getting migranes. it seems to me that many different causes may come into cause. i will try the neti pot and the nasal lubricant hopefully this will help.

thanks B

I went to a parade outside near the river recently and was standing next to someone who was chain smoking. I've been smelling cigarette smoke ever since. I first thought it was permanently in my hair which got to me thinking. That the act of smelling something is essentially ingesting it, and thus it's going to all my cells via my bloodstream, can these 1000 chemicals in cigarette smoke take months to leave my body, and can I be smelling the residuals. Sounds far fetched, but I'm a nurse and happen to know that applying perfume to the skin eventually makes its way to your liver. Are there any other clinicians out there with an opinion?

I too have had the smoke smell, but mine is more like wood smoke. I did smoke cigarettes for many years (about 25) and have been quit for 18. I was also raised in a home with mom and dad smoking the whole time growing up.

I have had the wood smoke smell happening for a few years now. It comes and goes (Thank God). I'm not sure what brings it on. Today I have no wood smoke smell, just smells like smoky bacon just cooked. (could that have been breakfast?). Well maybe, but I smell it in the car, in the store and everywhere. Ho-hum. Will try the dove soap approach. Doctors have told me its all in my head (they are so smart), duh.......

I too am having this issue and I'm going to try the moisture approach. It makes total sense that putting your hand over your mouth and nose would stop it (it does with me) because you're creating moisture with the air coming from the lungs. The weather here has just turned cold and the heat is on and we've been using the fireplace. I'm sure it's because the house is dry... Will post again to see if it works. I too thought it was co-workers and about 15 minutes ago on a whim googled it and was shocked to see so many with the same issue. It really is driving me nuts...
Thanks to all who posted.

I started noticing a smell very much like the smell you get after tanning in a tanning bed for a half an hour (something I used to do in my younger years). I had just started taking vitamin D which has a skin connection (sunlight on your skin creates Vitamin D) and had that same smokey smell but it seems to last longer. For me it is a pretty mild, barely noticeable smokey smell that doesn't really bother me either way. Due to forgetfulness, I stopped taking the Vitamin D for a couple weeks and the smell went away. I started taking it again and the smell came back. Still not sure if that is the connection, so out of curiosity I searched the internet for "VitaminD Smokey Smell" and happened upon this site. Not exactly scientific, your results may vary, but it may be worth stopping the Vitamin D if you are smelling smoke and taking vitamins. My vitamin regimen: Vitamin D, Multivitamin, 2 baby aspirin, omega 3-6-9, acidophilus (might be some magical combination here)

I too have experienced and still experiencing the constant presence of wood smoke. Most of the previous messages I have read say the smoke smells like cigarette smell. Mine is not the case. It is awful having this smell with you and you can't get away from it. No-one else can smell this chimney smoke smell. Today's temperature is 28 - 30 deg. no one would have a fire going. I have not spoken to the Dr. yet about it but I have had it for a good many years now. Has anyone had any answers?

I only recently have been having this problem of smelling what seems to be cigarette smoke. It comes and goes. No one smokes in my home or around me. I read that other people experience this but there doesn't seem to be an answer which is quite frustrating. I would love to hear from someone that maybe can shed some light on this problem.

I'm sorry other people suffer from this. This has really bothered me. I am a male in my late 40s and I've had migraines for 30 years. I have only noticed the smoke smell the last year or so. Lately I seem to notice it more after I take pain pills. Could that some how contribute to it?

43 Male, excellent health. I've been smelling cigarette smoke for the last couple of years (on and off) although I didn't realize it at first, because I thought the ventilation system was bringing the smell into work. Only when I started making comments about it and my employees started looking at me like I was crazy did I start to suspect. Now I smell it all the time, home, car, work and even on vacation. I live in southern Ohio where the wheather has turned cold, however, I just got back from Florida and it bothered me there where the weather was 75 - 80 degrees(it was even bad on the golf course). Sometimes it's so bad it almost makes me choke. I don't take any prescription medicine on a regular basis, no nasal sprays, no vitamins. I do take advil fairly regularly for back pain and resultant headaches. I am active, playing tennis, golf, etc and have no other known health problems. I would like an resolution to this issue if there is an answer out there. I do feel better knowing I'm not the only one.

I have been having this problem for a while. It seems like a whiff of dirty ash tray smell. No one in our home smokes. I tried the netti pot but now my sinuses ache. My whole head aches. I am going to try using just warm water and the moisturizer gel. It is very dry here in Arizona. Maybe a little bit of dehydration as well. This site has been very helpful.

I've been smelling smoke or ashes for the past few weeks. It comes and goes. I think stress might trigger it. No sinus problems. I was worried that it might be a sign of a stroke or brain tumor but I can't find anything to substantiate that theory. I think it's stress related somehow.

SO GLAD I FOUND THIS POST!!! me too. friends tell me its a spirit walking by my side..gee..boy am I glad its just sinuses. I was going a little nutty. :-)

Thank Goodness! Mine started about two months ago. I suffer with my sinuses, only take antibiotics, don't take vitamins.
Explained it away and didn't think too much of it until I went to the UK (from Aus) and could still smell it. Wasn't much fun waking up on the plane and smelling it - I can tell you. Also, wasn't much fun my family thinking I was crazy every time I asked if they could smell it.
Sometimes it's so bad, I choke. I really feel like I can't breathe through it. It's bad enough that it's a completely disgusting smell.
I think I'm going to try determined daughters suggestion - thanks - will let you know how I go.
