I have had daily heart burn/reflux for something like 6 months to a year now, I had thought it was all related to poor diet, smoking, drinking coffee, and high stress from school. I take zantac for the past two months for the GERD, and it worked really well in the beginning but has limited effectiveness now. Recently I have been having difficulty breathing, similar to when you eat way too much and it is difficult to take a full deep breath. It is quite scary, and I started having mild panic attacks about it. I get paranoid, so of course I thought it was some crazy cancer ravaging my lungs and throat. I have not seen a doctor for I have no insurance. After reading all of the other replies, it doesnt seem like seeing an MD will help much. I find that when I go out boozing with my friends the breathing problems disappear, probably cause it is related to stress, and drinking most certainly relieves stress. I do know that there is a surgery available, they do it for people with cystic fibrosis who have terrible GERD. Its called a fundiplication procedure, where they pull the top of the stomach and sew it around the esophageal sphincter that strengthens the integrity of the sphincter making it harder for acid to reflux. I hope we all figure out what works!!

I have had the same problems for a few years now. stomach bloats immediately after finishing a meal, even a light one. then feeling of chest tightness, difficultly breathing, high blood pressure, lightheartedness, eyes sensitive to light, ear sensitive to sound, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, just feeling like dying soon. All blood and cardiac tests were fine. Losing weight, cutting down food, avoid greasing stuffs helped a little bit. But there are two things that seem to further alleviate the problem a bit more:
1. A chiropractor will tell you that certain nerves surrounding your upper back seem to affect the way your stomach functions. They can check whether those nerves are normal or compressed. It works well for me.
2. Buscopan, which treats IBD, also seems to alleviate the discomfort.
3. Concentrate on exercises or stretches that relaxes your upper back/chest muscles
Good luck and keep searching for the right treatment.

thank you guys soo much for all the info. i have been suffering for about 3 or 4 years.
i do think my asthma plays a big role, because usually my symptoms are only bad when the air quality is low... my stomach is definitely WAY more sensitive than it used to be, and about 2 or 3 years ago, i dropped a ton of weight when this stuff started happening. i always had chronic ear infections, so whenever i had an upset stomach, or woke up nauseous and having my heart beating like crazy i always attributed it to that. but this definitely explains all the symptoms of my arms and legs going numb, difficulty breathing, and all that. when i get an asthma attack, my whole body goes numb from it. my fingertips tingle, then my arms, and torso, and legs, then i feel like im going to black out. when i went to the hospital today, i had all of this going on, but they said my blood oxygen wasnt THAT low. and they told me its not normal for that stuff to happen during an asthma attack. i am going to talk to my doctor, but this really seems like it could be a huge part of my issue. thanks again guys, i now have a ray of hope that i will be healthy enough to travel again. :-)

I've done a lot of online research on this, as well as gotten information from my doctor, as well as my sister, who has a lot of the same symptoms.

All of these things are related, and have an effect on each other. My sister and I both had our gall bladders out, and a year or two after that, we started showing problems with anxiety. After that, we started having problems with our stomachs and having heart palpitations and PVCs (premature ventricular compressions). We'd wake up in the middle of the night with out hearts racing like mad, and would have very bad heartburn and bowel problems.

My sister leans towards chiropractors and natural medicines, and she was told that her problems are related to an irritation of her vagus nerve. I found while looking things up that surgeries or other major abdominal / stomach illnesses can affect the internals and cause GERD and / or IBS to develop. GERD / IBS can then irritate the vagus nerve, compounding problems. Abdominal illnesses like these can also affect the general nervous system and increase anxiety. This will then trigger stomach problems and PVCs, and the cycle goes around again.

The trick to fix all this, I suppose, is to never get a stomach bug or a bad gall bladder 8-| Barring that, it's important to understand that all of these body systems are interrelated, and will feed off of each other. You must learn to take things easy and control your own anxiety, which will help to break the cycle.

As a side note, I was at one point given valium to help control my anxiety. I researched side effects and interactions, as I'm also on blood pressure medication. I discovered that valium and Benadryl are in the same medical family, and have similar effects (including muscle relaxation and stress reduction). I've taken Benadryl for allergies, and I knew what sort of effect it would have on me. I got rid of the Valium and take Benadryl instead, and it seems to help.

Pranayam tips:For better way of doing
perform pranayam with om ,and with feelings as if you r exhaling diseases from nose and inhaling positive energy
All gods bless are in the air your body is refusing it to take u inhale it with feelings all your organs will be activated to accept the blessings of god.In our body we have energy points which give energy now they are not in their normal state make them normal by doing pranayam.
1.sit straight make sure your spinal cord is straight, shoulders relaxed,no strain in any part of body check it in every 5,6 mins
2.keep your shoulders normal,relaxed,back straight.
3.do pranayama with ease, inhale om(means you will hear your breathe sound in nostrils is om do with all feelings) exhale negative energy make sure exhaling completely all air from lungs
4.when ever you feel chocked with excess gas in stomache and chest try to breathe into lungs and exhale completely from it 5 or 6times u ll feel better
5. dont think too much, dont afraid of any thing god will be with u
6.all this mentality and doing pranayam in sacred feelings certain kind of enzimes, hormons is added in your blood and helps you get rid of diseases and enhances the power of immunsystem
This is all in medical science what we can say is god.
Have belief in yourself this is the thing god tells u,Dont rely on medicine rely on yourself
This is the medicine for the disese which your body will help in secretion by following this breating execcise...
This was the medicine used in ancient age by the monks who stays in jungles.
Even you never fall into sick by doing this.
Another benefit apart from gastric is i used to had MUSCULAR NUTS,impatience all the time,HART, STOMACHE BURN,SOUR SOLUTION COMES TO MOUTH ,cold,BLOCKED NOSE(USE TO USE OTRIVINE IN NOSE AND DID PRANAYAM),headache, constipation, skin problem, hair loss, joint pain,PAIN NEAR LEFT SIDE NECK AND SHOULDER JOINT AREA all the time now its gone(IF U HAVE TOO MUCH COLD TAKE TULASI GHANAVATI 1-1-1 ONE MONTH)
Even if you dont know some disease there in your body that eill go away too. Dont worry ...

I suggest you look up two sorts of hernia on google.

Inguinal hernia

Here the top of the gut stretches into a bulb shape (up near oesospagus) below the throat:

my symptoms:
if i pressed on my chest near breast bone it made a slight popping sound
but this did relieve the breathing problem and dizzyness
occasional gastric reflux

I learned from my research that when there is excessive gas in the hernia it can put pressure on:

.lung
.heart
.blood vessels in chest

so you can get breathing difficulties or dizzyness or numbness ccasionally
Apparently it has been known in rare cases to cause heart attacks where it blocks blood flow to heart

Spigelian hernia,
This hernia runs under the muscles rather than appearing as a lump on the surface

my symptoms:
vague discomfort increasing over 3 years
belching when i pressed on the left gut
belching when I lie on left side
belching, it seems, all night
sense of a vague lump on left hand side
increasing liquidity in the faeces over time
bubbling sensations and sounds in weird places in my back

Mine was caused by lifting (trying to lift) a huge log when i was young and stupid. I recall feeling a tearing but stupidly did nothing about it. Well It came back to bite me in my 60s.

Every doctor i saw, 6 in all, diagnosed it as "hmmmm".
Finally found a surgeon who said "oh that sounds like a Spigelian hernia, not very common"
So it was not picked up by ultrasound , didn't respond to drugs, it needed a CT scan to finally track it down (yesterday)

You are not crazy, you are simply depressed because no-one is listening to you

Has anyone had these symptoms resolved? I'm 22 years old, and I've had chronic abdominal pain accompanied with trouble breathing and headaches for about four months now. I've had endoscopies, ultrasounds, xrays, CT scans, etc... I've seen four different doctors. All of them sort of throw up their hands and suggest the possibility of IBS, but this is no way to live. I'm literally terrified to eat, because that's what brings on these awful symptoms. I would love to know if anyone had their symptoms resolved or found out what was going on with them.

Greetings from CT... Yes bloating and difficulty breathing is my problem as well. Here is my answer. Nasal congestion reduces the oxygen flow. This causes stress to the nervious system. Blood pressure goes up stomach churns thus bloating with upward pressure on diaphram and shortness of breath... My ENT guy looked into sinuses and said all clear... But I could not and still can't take a deep breath without some strain... I ran across a solution.... At one point I had a bladder infection and was just sick for (3) days. I could not eat anything.... By the 3rd day of no food my breathing was perfect. The infection cleared up and I went back to my regular diet. In less than a week I was back to the same feelings. So the answer is at least for me.... Fast from all food for 1 - 2 days each week. Just spring water. It sounds painful and it is. But I can tell you most of your problems will disapear. By the way read Dr. Fiengolds 5 day alergy relief diet book. Most of our problems are due to what and how often we consume certain foods and drinks... Good Luck Be dedicated to the diet and you will find relief... Tom
