HI, my mother is diagnosed with Crohn’s disease, and got Sulfasalazine for treatment. How does it work? Is it actually curing or only inhibiting symptoms of the disease?

Sulfasalazine is used for the treatment of inflammatory processes in ulcerative cholitis; Crohn's disease; rheumatoid arthritis or ankylosing spondylitis. Sulfasalazine is a prodrug, in bowels it is broken down by bacteria into two products: 5-aminosalicylic acid (5ASA), and sulfapyridine. It is believed that 5ASA is responsible for anti-inflammatory action, but it the role of sulfapyridine remains incompletely studied. It is believed that sulfasalazin may also have a beneficial systemic immune-suppressant effect as well. It is well-tolerated and efficient drug, use for many years as anti-inflammatory agent.
