symbicort is a long acting beta adrenergic receptor agonist. it relaxes smooth muscle, dilates the bronchioles, and increases blood insulin. Screw the FDA, freedom from medication, i just want to breathe.

I believe that everyone is effected by medications in different ways. Though it is not supposed to cause weight gain, I say never rule it out. With asthma, I should mention that many doctors put their patients on the steroid prednisone...now THERE is a weight gaining drug. The good news is that the weight will come off when you d/c the drug. Symbicort is a synthetic type of steroid. It is said not to have the same drastic effects as prednisone, but your body may react differently. Never underestimate yourself...you know your body!!! If you feel it is causing weight gain - which at a certain point can cause problems for your asthma, talk to your doctor about some alternatives.

Good luck! Hope you're breathing better and feeling thin again soon! :-)

I have had exactly the same experience, it got so bad that I tried to do without symbicort and whilst my asthma was really bad I stopped feeling hungry, it's a real dilemma. Another thing was that I tended to cough up white powder (symbicort I presume) with flem which I have never done before.

I have been taking symbicort since middle of December. I've had weight gain (10 lbs).
I know drs say that inhalants are different than pills in that they go to only one organ (lungs) and that there's no weight gain. I've noticed online there are others who feel symbicort caused weight gain.

Questions:

If symbicort has caused my weight gain, is it due to water retention and bloating or due to increase appetite resulting in gain?

Are there withdrawal symptoms if I abruptly stop using the inhaler or reduce dosage to one puff 2X day?

I love not thinking about not breathing well and feeling normal; but, I hate that I gained weight--makes me unhappy and unsociable.

My clothes dont fit. FIRST time ever.
I have a fat roll - I cant help but show everyone AND make a special few poke my tums. who DOES that? im 31 !!!!
I cant poop! - FIRST time ever.
SLEEP? whats that?
Im lucky I have itchy skin too.
I woke up with a swollen eye, then BOTH puffy for the last week.

you would think that i would catch on!

My detective skills are not up to par bc it took 2 months to figure it out. I changed detergents, blamed the cat, the pillow is wrong, no its the matress, oh dear PINK EYE ! oh its seasonal ... i brushed it off until the lovely bloat settled in. . .

goodbye symbicort hello flovent.

oh my asthma HAS gotten better being on it =) woohoo, a little chunky itchy bloated eye patchy loopy and a nice full constipated belly BUT I CAN BREATHE =) haha

fingers legs and eyes are crossed that flovent will do me well !

OMG!!! Thank you so much for starting this thread!!! I'm in the Army, I've been doing nothing but cardio for the past 2 months. I was having trouble breathing while I'm running, so I was prescribed Sybicort. It's been nearly 3 weeks and I've gained 10 lbs after consistently holding 185lbs for the past year. I've been working out harder, and the lbs keep adding, and I'm not weight lifting. The sudden weight gain correlates to my using this medicine. I've been freaking out until now. Thanks for sharing your experience.

i have been using symbicort for the past three weeks for a really bad case of pneumonia (i have continuing lung problems which the doctors didn't want agitated by my hoarse coughing)...

since i have been taking symbicort, I have not found that i am hungrier (i am eating less), but i have noticed that with the same activity level and regular eating I am gaining weight like there is no tomorrow. I would say i have put on at least 10 pounds...

i don't want to just blame the symbicort, but i feel it has to be this...
i have, for the past two days, quit taking symbicort and am finally starting to feel like myself again... i'm not great, but i am better...

good luck anyways...

I have been using Symbicort for at least 12 months and have found it controls my Asthma & Hayfever so well but I have gained at least 10-12 kilos in the last 12 months. I am a very active person and couldn't understand this dramatic weight gain so I thought I would also find out if anyone else had the same problem

On Symbicort for one month. Breathing is wonderful. The 10 pound weight gain is not so wondeful. Is there anything to counteract the weight gain?? (I've given up booze since starting symbicort and have not increased intake of food.)

Thanks too for posting this...I have been using Symbicort Turbuhaler for the past two months and have gained between 7-10lbs. I have been much more active, and feel it is more of an increased appitite than anything else. I also woke up last weekend with a swollen eye and difficulty swallowing. This quickly passed (aprox 2 hours later) but i never really associated this with the medication until reading this forum. My asthma was only diagnosed 6months ago after a prolonged chest infection. I have never had an actual 'attack' but regularly 'wheeze' esp in the morning and evenings. Am considering jus giving it a miss for a week or so to see if i notice the difference in my appitite. suppose its about weighin up the pros and cons.

I have been using symbicort for 3 months and since then I have gained 15 lbs. I have been watching what I eat and exercising, but it doesn't seem to be helping. I have never experienced such rapid weight gain and this is the only thing I've done differently!

I lost about 20% of my body weight last spring, from 118 to 96lbs. I had every test in the world, because my doctor sent me to a specialist. Bottom line, severely inflamed esophagus and stomach. Then, I had to get Megase to regain the weight. After 6 weeks, I finally hit 115.
Then, they sent me to the Pulmonary specialist for the persistent rattle in my chest. I smoke, so they refused to believe I had had asthma since childhood along with many many allergies for years. Well, he ran tests and decided to put me on symbicort. Two weeks later, he started me on Spireva. In two months I gained 10 pounds even with a reduced appetite. I am now eating about 1/2 what I used to but my face is round and due to the belly, had to buy all new jeans. I went from a size 0 (been there for 6 years) to a size 3 or 4! Now that is a belly. I quit the stuff 5 days ago because I had gained another 3 pounds in five days while eating a yogurt for breakfast, normal lunch, and soup for dinner. All while at a business trade show where I walked from 10am to 5pm.
Now, I am taking the Spireva and Albuterol. Symbicort sucks.
Oh, in the middle of this mess the id**t put me on 10 days of Leviquin even though I refuse Cipro due to past experience. Well, that caused two trips to the regular doc and two trips to the dermatologist since I had a severe drug reaction and was completely covered with a drug rash! I also lost all feeling in ring finger, pinky finger and half my palm! Idiots in the medical field. Then, he acted so surprised that I reacted so adversely, even though I am allergic to Penicillin and Sulpher!
By the way, they can't tell you the long term effects because THEY DON'T KNOW! This stuff is new and has minimal track record.

Since starting Symbicort 6 months ago, I noticed I have gained a little weight. Symbicort makes me very jittery & I think I sometimes eat more, thinking it will help the jitteriness go away. It doesn't seem to help the jitteriness but its still an automatic kind of thing to go get something to crunch on. I'm going to start using my extra energy to exercise instead & see if this makes a difference in getting rid of the jitteriness. If not, it will help prevent the weight gain at least.

Pretty shocking to see this common theme about Symbicort and weight gain. I am with you all. I have been switching on a doff from symbicort to my flovent seravent routine. 2 things I've noticed. fat rolls, depression, 12-15lb weight gain, increased hunger. I've also tried changing back to my alternative seravent flovent for 2 weeks and started loosing weight again. I am convinced that symbicorts is having these negative effects on me. I am also dealing with itchy skin on my hands which is unpredictable, randonmly appears and disappears. But not when Im on seravent flovent. I'm done with Symbicort. Absolutely done with it.
