I started taking Symbicort 2 years ago as a treatment for COVID-related symptoms and asthma. I haven’t changed anything else. I had maintained my weight for many years. Over these 2 years I have gained 32 pounds!!! All in the stomach, thighs and face. I am not eating differently.
The Symbicort has helped my breathing and cough - and if I stop it for a day I notice it all comes back. But to me, it cannot be worth this weight gain, which is killing me, and my energy and ability to work.
I am now going to stop it for a while and see if I can get some weight off.
There are too many ppl on this site who are having the same problem with Symbicort and weight gain!
I would love to hear updates from others as to whether you have been able to lose weight when going off the Symbicort??

Weight gain is a concern that some patients express when using corticosteroid-containing medications like Symbicort (which contains budesonide and formoterol). However, the specific causes of weight gain can be multifactorial and may not solely be due to medication. Here are some general suggestions if you believe your medication might be contributing to weight gain:
-
Monitor your diet: Consider tracking your food intake to see if there have been any changes in your eating habits. Sometimes, people eat more when they feel better or if they've reduced physical activity due to breathing issues.
-
Regular exercise: Even with COPD and asthma, many people benefit from regular, appropriate exercise. Your doctor or a physical therapist can recommend exercises tailored to your condition and fitness level.
-
Limit salt and processed foods: Steroids can cause fluid retention, so you might benefit from reducing salt intake and avoiding processed foods.
-
Watch your calorie intake: Some people report an increase in appetite when taking steroids. Being mindful of portion sizes and choosing nutrient-dense foods can help manage calorie intake.
-
Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of water, which can help with fluid retention and satiety.
-
Monitor other medications: If you're on other medications, review them with your doctor to see if any might contribute to weight gain.
-
Regular weigh-ins: Weigh yourself regularly to monitor any changes and act swiftly if you notice a trend of increasing weight.
-
Consider seeking the advice of a dietitian: A registered dietitian can provide personalized advice and meal planning to help you maintain a healthy weight.
-
Adjustment of medication: If your weight gain is significant and directly linked to Symbicort, your doctor might consider adjusting the dose or switching to another medication.
