I just came across this site while trying to "educate" my doctor! An ARNP decided to cut off my Klonopin (without contacting my doctor) forcing me from two 2mg tabletsto one pt er day then after a week...quit! She tried to lie, but just sent a letter busting herself!
Depending on dose (most charts have 1mg K-pin = 20mg Valium, 2mg twice a day equals 80 mg a day...from all the "recent posts 6 months?" seem to all be asking the same question.
Klonopin, even after 2-4 WEEKS is supposed to be slowly tapered, anything over 8 months requires muh slower tapering and if taken for YEARS, absolutely mandates a very slow taper. And I canno stress strongly enough for the need to have an EXPERIENCED psych or psych nurse consultation for medically supervised tapering!
Abrupt discontinuation or cutting down too fast, causes "protracted withdrawals" that can last for up to 5 years or more, with absolutely HORRIFYING AND PERMANENT side effects, includiing permanent brain damage, organ failure and even death.
I don't know if I can leave a link on this site or not, so I will urge you to read the free online version of the AShton Manual. (credit C. Heather Ashton, Professor.) and look for "protracted withdrawal," "long term side effects" and (if you were ever on it for seiures -like me) "refractory status epilepticus."
If you're anything like me, most of us are about three aces short of a full deck anyway, but please, NEVER be so crazy as to just think you can "handle it on your own! If you've been on intermediate 4-6mg doses for any appreciable time, without medically supervised and experienced psych med substance counselors, you are placing yourself smack (no pun intended) in the middle of the Highway to Hell, very possibly with no way back! only have a few days before OxyContin "old turkey" from this same ARNP as well, so I doubt I'll be around to be of any help.
In closing, educate yourself, educate your doctor and seek "appropriate" medical help!
