Hello,
I’ve been trying to find out the cause for my excruciating back and legs pain for almost a year now, and finally at least I have some hope that I’ll be able to be both medication and pain free. Thy found 4 tarlov cysts at my sacral part and 3 on lumbar spine, so I’m scheduled for the cyst removal surgery in about a month. My neurosurgeon can’t give me straightforward answer when I ask will I be pain free because he suspects there might have been some damage done to the nerves. He says recovery process will make it easier for him to say, but so far I’ve found somewhat conflicting info on how long is tarlov cyst surgery recovery time. I know it depends on the number of the cysts, but I'd be very grateful if someone could tell me at least approximately what can I expect?

Hello, JimC. I have researched the Tarlov cyst surgery and found the on the average, it takes about 3 months to recover from the surgery. Over the course of the year following the procedure, many things will continue to improve, like pain in the back of the thighs and other symptoms that may have been present preoperatively. I think patience will be the first and foremost thing to have when recovering. You will be in the hospital approximately 3 days and then go home to recuperate. Good luck to you with your operation. Let us know how it goes for you.
Are there any other people that have had the Tarlov cyst surgery? How was your experience with it?

Can you please let me know how your surgery went and how long it takes to recover? I also have Tc in sacrum and Neuro won’t give me a straight answer either!

I know this post is pretty old but I wanted to share my experience for anyone in the future.
I had surgery on 12/7/23 to remove an extensive tarlov cyst in my sacrum. Dr. Voyadzis at Medstar Georgetown in Washington DC performed my surgery (and he did part of his training with Dr F in Dallas). Unfortunately when they opened me up, they found a fistula feeding my cyst creating a more complex situation requiring muscle grafts to prevent csf leaks. I went home on day 4 but after suffering for days with torturous headaches and neck rigidity I was readmitted and underwent a 2nd surgery on 12/21/23. The grafts had failed and spinal fluid leaked into my soft tissues for over a week. I think that was the most pain I’ve ever endured in my life. Needless to say, I truly believe the doctor is amazing, but the complexity of my cyst removal was just more than what we all expected.
I would agree with previous posts, this has been no cake walk. I thoroughly underestimated how long this recovery process would be and just how delicate I needed to be with my body post-op. I am hoping for the remainder of my recovery to be quick and uneventful. I still have some pain but I do feel like I’ve gotten more relief from the surgery already then I thought I would. Time will tell, but the outlook is good!
