My doctor said nothing about them regrowing !! What is the point of getting this procedure if they regrow and then basically have the opportunity to re-inflate the prolapse ?? I hope this is not the case as what i have just gone through was just a waste of time.!!
Now you have me worried o.O

Craig2, I don't think they will 'regrow'. They will get new tiny arteries and may never have a problem again. I'm sorry for implying they would regrow! :-) However, I don't think anyone knows what will happen over 20 years. I'd like to know how the people are that had this procedure 10 years ago.
I believe the prolapse is supposed to regrow and absorb into the wall of the intestine, isn't it?? I wish I knew what 'really' happens. I'm hoping everything does what the Dr. said it will do.
I did try the ice you suggested and think it may have 'shrunk' some of the tissue ... maybe it was only wishful thinking since my THD was done April 9.
Did you say you had the banding? My Dr. said I might have one to do IF the deflated hemorrhoid doesn't go back in. Ok, how bad was it?

My prolapse was a lot larger than what the doctor thought. I also have some more little interior one which i don't think he did anything with but i 'll find that out in 3 weeks time. I'm still on pain meds but only 2 tabs a day now that's so i can go to the toilet without it hurting as much then i'm able to cope with it for the rest of the day without any dramas. There was one person that has left some comments on another posting (can't remember which) and she's about 6 mths out now and she doing VERY well. So all we have to do is give it time. On something different my sister had her knee cartilage done it it took over 6 weeks to heal and that ws with complete rest NOT LIKE OUR BUMS !!! so you can expect it to take some time for it to complete heal I guess.

Well it's been just over 4 weeks now I've been back to the doc's and the only thing said was I've got a small fissure and that's it. My external hems are getting smaller by the day I'm completely off all meds but I'm still taking stool softeners, I've even managed to get out for a whole day !!! So everything is on the up and getting better every day. The only downer is the doc said i will probably need to do this again done the track o.O but now I've been through this and know what to expect it will be easier next but i sure hope it will be a LONG time down the track..

Craig2~Why did your Dr. think you'd need to have the THD again? What did he say about your external hemorrhoids? Will they 'shrink' away or what? If they shrink ... how long will it take?

MY THD is only a short gap measure as i have other things that is happening internally that i will need to attend to in the future.
With the external one that i got after the surgery i'm using a cream Proctosedyl and they are also reducing (more than 1/2 now) the more i get to move about. So i'm not to worried about them at the moment i'm just glad to be able to get around again.

Well I went for my final examination today expecting the surgeon to tell me what the next step was. To my surprise there is no next step!!! That's right no more hems !!!! YIPPEE!!!! I've been given the all clear you don't know how bloody happy I feel at the moment, but this doesn't mean that I'll be giving up on my vegetarian diet any time too soon, as i think this is helped me a lot but at least i can now sit back or get busy either way i'm FREE!!!!!!.

Hi There
I have been suffereing from grade 4/5 prolapsed internal hemmerroids for 3 years since the birth of my daughter
Life has been unbearable and a constant struggle day after day because of this .My whole day was dependant on whether or not i went to the toilet that day .The days i didnt go were a god send because i would be pain free ..but as soon as i did go i would find myself sitting on the toilet for hours at a time ..bathing 4- 5 times a day taking copious amounts of pain killers administering enemas just to have that "empty feeling" and basically being tired through anaemia from the constant blood loss that im not exaggerating when i say had been more or less constant for 3 years
I was put forward for a striaght forward hemmorroidectomy a year and a half ago which after watching all the videos online and reading all the forums i frightened myself so much i decided not to go through with it ..consequently things got worse and worse and worse till i was at the point where i couldnt careless about recovery pain because the constant pain i was in was runing my life ...
I went back to my dr and i was referred to a consultant who once i told him how anxious i had become suggested i try the THD ...I just agreed because i just wanted something to be done i didnt give the recovery a second thought as id just had enough
I was seen in septemeber by my consultant who coincidently was the man that did my colonoscoy and he had a look said yep fine for the THD ..
I came home looked it up on the net watched a video didnt get scared this time just looked at it as educating myself
Anyway ...i had the operation 3 days ago and i can honestly say i have been in no pain what so ever since and that is not one word of a lie
When i came round from the general anethestic i did have pain ..but it was exactly the same pain as what i had been in for 3 years ..after an hour in recovery the local anethetic and painkillers kicked in and i honestly could of skiped out of the hospital
If i had of had a sitting down job i could of gone back to work the following day i had a BM next day which wasnt pleasent but not painful ..ive had terrible diorreah because i have been told to take lactulose but i differ with coeliacs (discovered this year, again not helping the problem ) so havent really needed stool softeners
There has been some slight swelling on the outside of my anus hole (sorry TMI) which look like external roids but i know eventually good diet and creams will sort that out ..
For me the most important thing is that i now feel human again i can stand up for more than 2 minutes before i have to sit down ..ive slept so much better ..ive more colour in my face already and honestly people go for the THD my surgeon was absolutely fantastic and i cannot wait to get my life back to normal and enjoy having time with my daughter who has had to witness her mum in agonising pain for the last 3 years
Highly recommended i cant express how happy i am now i feel its over ..good luck to you all

My goal is to warn any and everyone of the dangers this surgery COULD impose. I believe you should be sent home with a catheter no matter what and I actually feel there should be an overnight stay. For two weeks I've been glued to these boards trying to find comfort in the fact that my Dad was in horrible pain after having this surgery. He had surgery, peed afterwards with taking a Flomax and was sent home without a catheter. The first 24 hours we were like wow this recovery shouldn't be too bad. From there it went downhill. For two weeks he was in horrible pain. He kept telling us the pain was not in the surgical are but in his back and sides. Took him to the doctor one week post op and they said he needed better pain management and gave him more pain meds. That helped a small amount. He had not had a bowel movement for two weeks post op. Kept calling doctor with concerns. His legs were swelling also. Finally took him in to doc. Doc sent him to ER to have leg checked because it was swollen. Come to find out he was in Renal Failure. His kidneys had stopped working. They said his prostate and or bladder was swollen from surgery and had caused this. This could have been totally preventable had he been sent home with a catheter. Thank GOD that he was okay after they ran fluids through him, gave him a catheter, many tests later, and 2 nights in the hospital. Thank GOD they said everything's back to working 100 %. He still has to follow up with a Urologist and keep his catheter for at least a week. My point here is to tell anyone who decides to have the THD surgery, to insist on a catheter post op. I am making it my mission to spread this word. I don't even want to think about "what ifs" but am just grateful that we brought him in when we did and they caught it. I'll also say that if something just doesn't seem right, stay on the doctor....constantly...DEMAND they do further testing.

I am 8 days post op. The bleeding has been minimal but having a BM hurts like no other. I am in pain all the time; the only comfortable position is lying on my side on the couch. I am still taking Percoset around the clock (1-2 every 3-4 hrs) which of course leaves me cloudy and tired. When my doc told me that I would be back at work after 2-3 days, I was really looking forward to a fairly painless time. She was WRONG! I am going to teach a 3 hour class in 2 days and am scared to go. I haven't tried driving yet (sitting while on the computer is bad enough) and am anxious about that as well. I don't know where the stats come from that "most patients resume normal activities within 24-48 hours". I have not seen too many blogs here where people can testify to that cure rate. I am pretty miserable.

I am now 5 weeks post op. I had one hem that popped out after a week is still popping out but it is MUCH smaller and no longer hurts. It is not a new one according to the doc and was ligated during the procedure She is hopeful that in another few weeks, it will whither away due to lack of blood supply like the other ones. If not, she wants to remove it the old fashioned way. I am not sure I am up for that so in the mean time I am just hoping it shrinks on its own.
However, for the first time since my surgery, I can honestly say that I am very glad I did it. I can cleanse myself, it no longer hurts and my sitz baths are more and more infrequent. I am finally on the mend.
Don't be discouraged... I had (doc's words) "an enormous amount of work done" so my case probably dragged on longer than most. Good luck!
