I had THD performed 9 days ago. I had dealt with my problem for over twenty-five years. It got to the point of after standing for fifteen minutes, they would prolapse and I won't even go into the problem of bleeding, etc. I'm not one to go to a doctor but I had had enough! The gastroenterologist immediately referred me to a surgeon. I had a colonoscopy (I'm 52), which was a good thing, they removed three polyps that, upon biopsy, proved they would have turned cancerous. The colonoscopy was a piece of cake! About the hemorrhoids, upon consultation with the surgeon, she recommended THD. I had remembered that my father had his hemorrhoids removed the old fashion way and to this day I remember the days he spent in the bathroom crying as he did his thing. I felt THD sounded better than that. The surgery took two hours because, after the fact, the surgeon stated I had the worst case of internal hemorrhoids that she had ever seen-- initially the surgeon thought it would take about 45 minutes. I was on some heavy pain killers the first three days (Valium and Oxy). I was also directed to take three tsps. of mineral oil three times a day. Frankly, during those first three days I was either asleep, sitting on the throne or sitting in the bathtub. The cycle repeated twenty-five to thirty times a day. But! The pain was manageable (probably because of the pain killers) and my rectum and anus were completely normal! There was not a single prolapse, etc. By the end of day three I stopped the mineral oil because I got so exhausted passing pools of oil and not much else. I made sure to drink a small helping of fruit juices on a regular basis all day long. By day four I was only taking Tylenol but I was scared to death of what a normal BM would feel like. I was eating fruit, light salads etc. but I had a very little appetite. I came out of surgery weighing 190, I was now 175. Frankly, by day seven, I was at my emotional and physical end. The pain was not out of control, by now I would call it discomfort, but I was getting next to zero sleep, urinating was a dribble here and a dribble there, and though I had a feeling to visit the throne, only a little visitor dropped to the bottom of the toilet. At this point I did not have a lot of kind thoughts about my surgeon. Then it happened! The stomach gurgled, and uncontrollable urge hit and I had my first real BM. For those that have had this type of surgery, you may share in the absolute joy that I felt. I know it sounds silly but it was like I wanted to tell everyone I met how I had the best BM of the last twenty-five years of my life. I felt pretty good the rest of day seven. The morning of day eight was a slight step backwards but by noon I had another BM and by the evening a third. At this point, I have nothing but praise for my surgeon and this has been the best thing that has happened to my poor bottom in the last twenty-five years. It is still uncomfortable to sit for long periods. I'm off all pain killers. I'm eating lots of salads, fruits, etc. and I have tried a little chicken but I chewed it very well! I certainly understand that there is still a road ahead of me that will not be completely easy but I see a light at the end of the tunnel. My advice. Find a surgeon who knows how to do the procedure well, expect some intense pain and expect, at times, to be at the very end of your emotional and physical limits, but the end result has been fantastic. Whoever came up with this idea needs to be given a Noble prize!

Hi All Another update ...

Well its now been about 4 weeks since my 2nd THD procedure and if any of you have read my other posts you will see that this second one was pretty painful ...but i have to say it was WORTH IT ...

My life although improved considerably after the first bout of surgery i still had problems and it wasnt "normal" ..after the second THD surgery where the surgeon stiched me up higher and alot tighter i can honestly say i am 100% normal now ...I have no bother with going to the loo what so ever ..Still have the normal extreme wiping sport going on afterwards but this is very littleto put up with cosidering the debilitating pain that i had been in for the past 3 years or so ...

I m not going to flower it up it wasnt pleasent the 2nd time round the first time was a breeze and i sailed through it but this wasnt as easy ..but saying that i was fully recovered after a week and after 2 weeks i had returned to the gym and was doing my usual high impact les mills body attack programme with total ease ...without i might add the uncomfortable feeling of hems ...

best of luck everyone ...stay strong and be positive honestly there is light at the end of the tunnel

Noods

hi intc2rd

I had THD surgery 5 days ago, and I am still seeing prolapse, my prolapse was never very big, however my hemorrhoids were positioned in a really bad place, so I was always in pain, right now i can tell that my rectum is still swollen because it is still hurts to pass bowel movements, I was not painless after the surgery, i did have A LOT of pain, so how did your appointment with your surgeon went?, do you need more surgery?

I thought I would update my post from two weeks ago. It has been about a month since my surgery. The results are fantastic. From the time of my last post until now, things got better each day. At this point, I would say I am 100%. No, the surgery wasn't easy and unlike others, there is no way I could have returned to work a couple of days after surgery. As for me, an honest assessment would be a fifteen day recovery time to feel 95%, but my case was quite severe. Those that recover quicker, more power to you. Looking back on it, I wouldn't hesitate on the surgery, it has given me my life back and I am thrilled.

Hi Laura, Sorry - I've just seen your post. I'm going back for 2nd surgery tomorrow. Whilst i had improvement after my first surgery, it turns out that I too, have quite a complex case with large hems that are very stubborn. My surgeon is going to be a lot more aggressive this time round - take the stiches lower (the lower they come, the higher the chance of pain) to capture more of the hem and lift them even higher with an extended mucopexy. I'm preparing myself for pain (ddin't really have any first time round), but if it works, then it will be well worth it. I hope that you're doing okay 1 month in.

Today is day #12 after THD surgery and it is the 2nd day that I can actually sit without an overwhelmingly uncomfy pressure in my pelvic region down to the anus. I swear, the first 4 days were absolute hell. I've never been that terrified in my life, then knowing that my bowels would move and force me to deal with that pain. I literally said, 'I am never eating solid foods again!' I have needed pain meds, strong ones, up until yesterday morning. There is no way on Earth that i couldve returned to work any sooner than tomorrow. almost 2 full weeks for to get to 95%. 100% is still some time away. After surgery my Dr told me that I had more hems than he expected, so immediately he wanted me to stay the night. A tuesday morning 1 hour procedure now had me in the hospital until thursday evening. I was ready to go but my DR wated me to stay one more day, i declined and just suffered at home, which was cheaper but I immediately missed the spa like service of the hospital. Make sure you have somebody to pamper you and take care of ALL the little things and BIG things alike. You can only focus on healing. I can see the end of the prolapse. it is definitely pulle and stitched on the anal walls. I would be most happy when the swelling officially leaves and this prolapse falls off and I have a normal looking butt again. I am happy I had the surgery and can't wait for the official final product. I do notice an external hem, small, but there. I may have to get that handled net, but no pain either way..

I  can really just recommend the THD procedure. I had it done almost 1 year ago and have been painfree ever since. Afterwards I stayed for one night at the hospital and went home the next day. The first 5 days it stung a bit and I felt some pain but it got better and better and after one week it was all good. I'm feeling great after 10 years of suffering it really is a big relief! Just make sure you find the right doctor who informs you and looks after you!

best of luck!
