Thanks. It's awsome that you went all that time dry. I was never peer pressured to do it, I don't sucumb to stuff like that. I just..I dunno, wanted to. And I never crave it either, so I won't be needing to have even 1 any more. I'm not like addicted to alcohol in any sence, overall I'd say I've had maybe 10 beers, and then like .25 of a litre of hard stuff. And yeah, thats overall. So I'm not addicted...I'm just a cheap drunk lol. Anyhow thanks for the help, for the sake of running...I WILL STOP! :D

Moderation? Come on folks!!!

Do you do arsenic in moderation?
Nail polish?
Car battery acid?

Moderation is used towards those nutritional things which are tolerable in portioned amounts. Honey, sugar, fats and other things of this nature are tolerable in small amounts.

Alcohol is never beneficial. The body cannot process and utilize any of it. The body does in fact recognize it as a poison. The light headedness is not drunkeness but in fact dizzines, your'e intoxicating the body and the mind. You're crowding out oxygen from the blood and brain. Try running and holding your breath to get the same effect.

Talk to your liver or better talk to someone who has chirosis of the liver. Someone who has brain cells burned like a drug or pot head. Drink water or Gatorade instead and run like a wildman. Getting t-shirts, medals and finishing marathons will get you drunk in the right way. Talking to you like I talk to my sons because I care about you.

Cancel the plans with the winos or your plans will cancel you.

Hey dg12,
Why are you trying to push your personal beliefs on other people in such a harsh manner? Alcohol is not harmful in moderation and it is not really apropo to equate it to the different "harmful substances" you listed. When someone like you, "alarmist", uses such antiquated rhetoric to espouse your personal opinion about a subject, you quickly lose the attention (and the validity) of your intended audience. Maybe it would be better to have an intelligent conversation with someone then to come across with an over-the-top scare type of attack. I know you mean well, as is obvious from your concerns, but lighten up just a little bit.
(the above is just my personal opinion and not to be construed as FACT).
thanks,
Kell

Alcohol is never beneficial.
I believe there are numerous studies, papers, etc that will disagree with that assessment. 1 or 2 drinks a day (the definition of moderation....) has been correlated with healthy heart function by tons of researchers (even though they are totally sure why yet). I won't provide a link. It's too easy to look up, so figure it out on your own.

Those results are also done with groups of 'average' adults. There have been other studies done that show eating more fruits and vegetables, exercising regularily, maintaining a healthy weight and not smoking puts a person on a level of health that those 3-4 weekly drinks add less than a 1% benefit to the correlation of heart health.

Hey jrjo,
I think you are right. The list of results are what I would consider a moderate lifestyle. I think MastrBrwr is referring to a study about wine and the inherent goodness of vitamin E that is contained within. I have read this study in the past and the wine is believed to reduce risk of heart disease.
BTW, jrjo stated 1-2 drinks, not 3-4 ( :D )

MY mistake in the earlier post, the 1-2 drinks was made by MastrBrwr and not by jrjo, sorry.

i really admire all of the encouraging comments on this topic. i've always been substance-free (straightxedge), but as a freshman in college (at what's supposed to be the number one party school in the country, depending on who you ask) who's watched many of her closest friends from high school who never touched alcohol or saw the need for it start drinking every weekend in the past couple months, these comments have given me a little boost too. well said. alcohol contains SOME good things, like vitamin e and such, but in addition to those ingredients, you're also consuming the stuff that's just awful for you. it's much more detrimental to your health than it is beneficial.
i totally can feel you, mike, stick to it, i think you'll be really happy with yourself if you get rid of what's keeping you down.
on a non-alcoholic beverage note... i found that soda was killing my running like you wouldn't believe. so i've had to give it up :cry::cry: and man, i love soda so much. (although i must admit, every once in a while qt lures me in for a 49 cent fountain quart... shhh...)
