Hi I am 13 5”3 and 110 pounds. My mom keeps telling me I should’t eat jimmy dean sandwiches or drink soda when I go to my dads (every other week.) She told me if I keep doing that I will have to run all day and take vitamins or I will get cancer… she found out she had the genetic form or breast cancer and will never shut up about it and it is really hard not to get mad at her going "you are going to get cancer" 24/7. I know she is trying to help but, I really what to be allowed to live my life with out obsessing over the fact that is highly likely I already have cancer in my genes. what do you think I should lose weight and watch what I eat all the time and do cancer studies to avoid everything that "causes cancer” (which is pretty much everything.) Or what she is making me kind of self conscious.

First of all at 5"3 110 lbs is NOT overweight at all!~!!  You are about the normal weight for your height.  If you go below 105 you will be underweight.  Below is a website you can use to verify this and show your Mama ;o)

If I were you I would sit down and talk to your Mama about this.  Be respectful.  Explain how you feel without blaming.  Let her talk too and explain her side.  Your Mama cares a great deal about you sweetie and she knows firsthand how horrid breast cancer is.  She probably wants to help you and others avoid it at all costs.  As someone who has battled and conquered many debilitating conditions I share a lot of health information with others.  I wouldn't wish what I went through on my worst enemy.

You don't have to obsess; however, watching what you eat is a good idea.  Food choices become habit and can either help give you energy and keep you healthy OR they can feed illness and cause disfunction in your body.  It is good to start healthy habits at an early age you'll have better overall health for longer.  Here are the main things to remember:

Drink water. You can add lemon slices or cucumber slices to add flavor and lemons give as much energy as soda but it is healthy and balances your bodies PH to normal levels aiding proper digestion and body functions.

Avoid soda and sugary drinks google HFCS health effects it effects even the young

eat veggies esp raw a good rule is half your plate ;o)

fruit in moderation.  It's good for you but has sugars so moderation is key

protein servings should be about the size of your palm

fastfood, junkfood, and processed foods have chemicals and additives that cause a lot of health problems even the young.  Even if they don't cause problems now they will later.  Better to have healthy habits sooner than later.

Exercise daily or at least 3 times a week. To keep healthy.

Have at least 3 decent meals a day and healthy snacks.  Do not starve yourself it will put your body in famine mode causing fat storage and slow metabolism.  It will also make you more suceptable to illnesses like colds and flu.

Show these to your Mama they might help her as well.  Don't worry about your weight you are a normal weight.  Also true beauty comes within; never forget that!

I usually do cross country or track but summers are kinda my break from running 3-2 miles a day. but cross starts in like a week so I should be good I think I will start some yoga before too. As for the diet thing It is the summer and I kind of sleep in because I stay up later so I ate brunch of 3 cup cakes and a soda then Chinese food for diner lol I know not very good but I sorta go overboard with the fact I am alone at my dads house (with junk food and soda unlike my moms) When xc starts I have to drink water and pretty much nothing else because I get dehydrated and get headaches. I think she realizes I am healthily but keeps saying my metabolism will slow down. The weird thing is sometimes i go 4-5 days without going the bathroom so I don’t think it can slow down.Its gotten better though. So all of this stuff is done by school time but school lunches are really gross now the us has determined we are all obese so no salt on ANYTHING and all whole grains, fruit and veggies are in cans (I HATE caned fruits) so I don’t really eat lunch. Maybe I can bring sack lunch in the future and snacks before XC. Thank you so much!!!!

Everything in moderation sweetie ;o) Lemon water is great for fighting dehydration btw. I put 1 or 2 slices in my water and fill a big 32oz glass with ice then the lemon and water. She is right that at some point your metabolism will slow down it happens as we age. Though bad diet choices and not eating can slow things down sooner.

If you are going that long without a BM you should think about adding fiber. Otherwise the food just sits in your digestive tract getting icky and will cause problems at some point. Veggies, fruit, oat groats and flaxseed can all help with that.

Yes food can get pretty boring without some kind of spice!

I hate ANYTHING in a CAN so I am with you there I would pack a sack lunch don't skip meals sweetie. I did way too much of that when I was younger and paid the price later. I thankfully was able to turn it all around *phew*

Not a problem sweetie...enjoy being a kid, don't stress too much, do try to make healthy food choices a habit but don't obsess over all of it. Us Mama's can go overboard sometimes...remember it is cause we love our babies though ;o)
