And I think I agree with you, but I'm not sure yet...
Of course you do. Welcome to the dark side, Luke.
What will it take for people to give this a higher priority?
Every person in their own time. Overeating is an addiction, no doubt. Just like drug abusers or alcoholics, each person eventually must face the ultimate choice: quit what you're doing, or suffer the consequences (or even die). For some enlightenment comes early, for others too late. From personal experience, I finally got so disgusted about not being able to get out of my own way that I made the choice to invest in myself.

Funny how this topic came up today. This morning I was watching my students and wondering if they knew what they were getting themselves into as they stuffed another donut in their mouth, had ramen soup for breakfast, and over half of them were drinking soda. (I have juniors and seniors)
Did you know that most schools earn money by allowing vending companies to sell junk food to our kids? It's a great way of making money. My school sells Otis Spunkmeyer cookies - 3 for $1 during 3rd period and lunch. We also have Pizza Hut, Blimpie, and Chick-Fil-A selling food on campus. In the morning, it's Krispie Kreme and cappuchino.
Like many of you, I've fought the weight battle. I've lost 50 pounds, and it was the hardest thing I've ever done. I'd been healthy and athletic most of my life, then became ill and unactive. I never noticed how heavy we had gotten as a society until I lost all this weight. Now I do notice, and I worry about our kids in particular. They're getting bigger, not exercising, and far too many spend half the day in school, and the other half working. They eat on the run, do homework the class before it's due, and eat from machines. Something needs to change.

That's exactly what it is. An investment in oneself.
The reason that so many schools serve Coke is b/c Coke et al are the people who will fund the schools. Gov, big or not, isn't doing it. Don't let a radical lefty tell you what you already know: school funding isn't on the agenda of this particular administration. No school funding now = more Medicaid spending then on people with diabetes, etc. Pay now or pay later. It's all about priorities.

Education isn't on anyone's agenday, democrat, republican...they all like to talk, it sounds great at election time, but when it comes down to it, they aren't willing to invest the money. The machines have been in the schools a lot longer than this administration. (although, I'm not nuts about some of the legislation being passed at the moment regarding education, but that's a whole different rant)

I see. When someone talks about Big Gov and its responsibility/non-responsibility toward fat people, that's fine. But if someone brings it up regarding school, that's different. Hypocrisy much?
It's true, this nonfunding didn't happen overnight, it isn't only this administration who didn't fund schools. I never said that was the case. But it's what we have right now and I'm not gonna shy away from a particular conversation just because someone wants to keep this at a certain level.
Why are you so unnerved of anything political anyway? Do you not understand that just about everything you do or every right you have or every road you drive or every dollar you pay has political implications? This country is all about infrastructure, baby, and it's all rules and deals etc. Why act like it isn't?

Because there are 1,000+ better places on the interwebby to discuss such matters. If I wanted to 'think' all day, I'd log off and go back to work. I think that most of us use this as an escape for the hassles of the 'real world' and I'd like to keep it that way.

It's neither nepotism nor fascism. It's just ridiculous.
If you're too lazy to even engage in a dialogue, you can hardly harp on overweight people for their laziness. If you don't think it's a fun thread, get off it.
I don't appreciate the not-so-subtle censor. When any opposing view can't be held, I don't think I want to be here anymore.

I don't feel that I censored anything. If I did, please point it out to me and I'll correct my error.

Please don't mention Fascism. "Not that I condone fascism. Or any 'isms'. 'Isms', in my opinion are not good. A person should not believe in an 'ism'. He should believe in himself. John Lennon said it on his first solo album. 'I don't believe in Beatles, I just believe in me.' A good point there. After all, he was the Walrus."
