My daughter is 5 years old and is overweight. I have been tracking her weight since 12 weeks. She was born at the 25-50% --- but, quickly shot up to 90%+. I am relatively small ... 5'1" 100lbs. My husband is larger ... maybe 20lbs overweight. We have weight issues in our family -- but, sporatic (a few people on both sides).
I try very hard to watch my daughters weight -- clearly I don't want to starve her --- but, I am unsure what to do. She is active (but, can be a bit lazy in organized sports). I minimize TV, computer or any sedentary activities. I never talk about dieting --- only to be healthy.
I have spoken to my child's doctor multiple times. Early on they indicated not to worry about it but, gave me suggestions to incorporate into her diet. I have also recently gone to a children's nutritionist -- who didn't have too much new to offer...minor tweaks to things I was doing.
I am not sure if there is anything else I can do? Any suggestions? My daughter probably eats 1200-1500 calories a day (I don't limit her calories, per se but am wondering if that is too little/much). She eats lots of fruits and veggies --- always has water. No juice .. only 100% whole wheat bread. I am going to start to up her protein in the morning --- and I think she needs more calcium.
But looking for other suggestions?

Hi there, I think that your daughter is probably eating too many calories. For her age and size, she should probably be eating less although I would check with a doctor on what the exact figure is. Being overweight is NOT a health problem in and of itself--so long as she's active and eats well, I don't think it's much to be concerned about. What do you think?

Thanks for your note. I have talked to the doctor and they honestly have not given me a calorie amount ...indicating I shouldn't be limiting (counting) calories (which I don't really -- other then watching what she eats).
She seems to be hungary a lot -- since I posted last I have incorporated more protein into her diet in the morning (Turkey burgers for breakfast) which seems to be helping and she doesn't complain about being hungary all the time.
I worry about what will happen when she gets older, as her BMI is 95% -- and if there is something I need/should be doing now. I feel like I monitor closely without being overt with her -- I was just looking for suggestions that maybe I haven't thought of...
I am trying to keep her very active -- and will continue to on the path I am on.
Thanks for your input.

No problem. Also--try to fill her up with vegetables as much as you can. Eating a pound of carrots has only like 100 calories so it's a good practice to stay full. I know that when I was trying to lose a bit of weight that lots of vegetables help. I know that she's a kid so she might not be as into veggies but I loved them when I was a kid. Can you do that with her?
