Thyroid surgery implies removal of part or the entire thyroid gland. General anesthesia is required. After the surgery, she may have drain which prevents fluids from building up in the wound. Complications are rare, like difficulty swallowing, numbness of the skin on the neck, and low blood calcium. Patients who have thyroid surgery may be required to take thyroid medication to replace thyroid hormones or to take calcium replacement if their blood calcium is low. This mostly depends on how much thyroid gland remains, and what was found during surgery.
