Hi. Urine retention happens when urine build-up in your bladder. When a large amount of urine stays in your bladder, after urination, urine retention will occur. Persons with urinary retention problem are more likely to have urinary tract infections. It usually occurs after surgery for a stroke. It also occurs as a side effect of certain meds. I am 57 years old and I asked my urologist the same question – what can be done to treat urinary retention in elderly people? He just told me to keep a bladder diary before our meeting, and then we will make further steps.
