So sorry to hear of all these cases. I too like the rest had an L6. Mine was fused from the L5 to the sac joint.  After all the searching   using Chiro, therapists, Pain management Docs they finally discovered it and we were on track. Doc Patel now from Loyola now of CIU performed the surgery and removed 90% of mine leaving only enough still attatched to the fusions to not alter my L5 or Sac bone. I must say I did receive a little relief instead of the pain being an 8 and focused on one point it is now about 4-6 and more spread out than pinpoint. One thing that boggles me is my pain is at its worst if I take a long hot shower. Usually heat helps most people but in my case modifies the pain. It feels like everything in there has no room to move and the heat expands everything to where theres no room left. Kind of how a can of pop will explode if left in the freezer. I think at this point my problem is more nerves rubbing but Im no expert. Good luck to all, my prayers are with ya's.

I was just diagnosed with an extra L6 vertebrae, however had problems for years. I am 33 and am damn tired of the dr's that say you are too young to have this much pain...what the heck does age have to do with pain. I also have been told that I am too young for artheritis too....but have moderate joint damage in most of my major joints. I don't think this will help you, but I do know that it helps to know that you are not crazy. I do have a few words of wisdom...don't give up, keep trying...I went through years of this and finally got a dr to listen and help. Core strength training helps, so does heat and lots of baths. Also theraputic massages help a lot. Good luck, I really mean that, I feel your pain.

I was just told by my chiro that I have an L6, along with spondylolisthesis and pars 2 defect. I was first told about the spondy in 2007 after an accident, and was told it was the L5-S1. I had occasional twinges in my sciatic nerve. I was involved in another accident a few months ago and the next day I started having sciatic pain on the right side...constantly. Went to new chiro and was told I have an extra vertebra and pars 2 defect with spondy. All the pain has been in my right femoral joint.

I am a 28 year old female who just recently after about six months found out that not only do I have an L6 but I have scoliosis, a bulging disc and a hernia pushing on the disc accompanies it. I have seen about 4 doctors so far. I've had a MRI, x-rays the whole nine. After talking to a surgeon last week it was told to me that there was nothing that can be done to relieve the pain and that I would have to live like this for the rest of my life. The hernia is pushing on nerves also which is causing me severe pain down both of my legs. The doctor that I spoke w/ last week informed me that I can have back injections to relieve the hernia that is pushing on the disc but that is about all the relief I will get. I find it very frustrating that I can not function normally. I can not work, pick up my kids, lift anything, stretch or bend. I have also been diagnosed w/ depression since my diagnosis. I don't want to give up and believe I need a second opinion. In dire need of relief from this back pain.

I have an L6 as well. I have suffered from chronic low back pain since I had my daughter at 21. I am now 42 and have found that doing yoga stretches helps with flexibility and relieves the pain. I had been going to a chiropractor 4-6 times per month for a few years doing spinal decompression therapy, where they strap you to a machine and stretch your spine. I purchased a gravity inversion machine (you buckle your ankles in and turn yourself upside down and hang) 2 years ago for $80 and it was the best money Ever spent! I hang upside down for 1-2 min every day sometimes 2 times a day and I can't believe the difference it has made! I had 2 herniated disks in my low back in addition to my L6. Hanging upside down uses gravity and your own body weight to relieve pressure on your spine. I no longer have herniated disks or chronic back pain. I would highly recommend this to Anyone suffering from back pain, L6 or not!

I seem to have same problem. The specialist says no heat at all only cold "rapid relief pads" are best he says. They seem to be helping. I did have an mri but the specialist found it on the x-rays. I have been suffering for over three years. thought it was my hip after a fall . I was treated for that with physio. Told my dr. I wasn't getting better. He told me get used to it ,you have fibromyalgia from the fall. I changed doctors an within a week I was having x-rays and mri sent to a specialist. I have extra vertebrae and bulging disks three in my lumber and my s nerve is pinched because of the swelling. I think doctors need to take time to listen.

Hello,Im 20 years old in the mililary and i have sciatica and patella femoral syndrome both in the same leg, im very healthy, very active. took an MRI to show an L6 Vertebrae. the doctor put this in the report -->

L5-L6: Mild facet degenerative changes.  Mild broad-based posterior disk bulge,

slightly eccentric to the right.  No significant foraminal narrowing.they think its a chain reaction from a sprained ankle a few months ago which healed and i've been getting patella femoral on and off for the last 2 yeard depending how hard i run or do high impact activities but that started acting up then they did something at the Doc's and i felt shocking in my hip which got worse. occationally my uppter back between my shoulder blades will radiate pain from the spine and makes my last two fingers on the left side go numb as well as make my armpit cold and my hand shock just like my foot. it's incredibly hard to get someone to listen to me because im so young and might be seen as trying to get out of something like many my age usually do. after the MRI i think they have to take me serious at this point. im just trying to figure out what it means because im not a doctor or any sort so i cant wrap my head around this is it bad or is it fixable? im already doing physical therapy and was on some high dose anti-inflamitory meds which isnt helping and i have an appointment with my doc and physical medicine. and i come to find out im 5 weeks pregnant so sugery is out im not sure about local injections. just if anything what the heck does it mean?

I have a pinched nerve in my L5 and L6. I have been suffering and have seen multiple doctors over the last year and have had several hospital stays due to severe pain. Finally I
Ihad a good radiologist who found the pinched nerve which I will treat with a steroid shot and then most likely have surgery as I can't sit, stand or walk for long periods of time. I have also lost my job due to this injury. My advice is don't wait. Pain meds and injections only mask the problem get a neurosurgeon involved if you have a pinched nerve. PT didn't help me either. Good luck.

I also have this problem of having an extra vertebrae of L6. This was found out when I went to the doctor with a lower back pain which was bothering me for quite some time.

But doing Yoga especially the backward bending exercises takes care of the problem to a great extent. Surya Namaskar also is a great solution to this problem
