Can I take a little smaller dose of warfarin on the once a week day that I decide to drink a 6 pack? The 2 beers a day thing does not work.I would rather have a dose of alcohol that I can feel and adjust the warfarin medication accordingly.I'm not talking about getting stupid drunk just a 6 pack.If the alcohol affects the inr/pt level, than there has to be a formula to adjust the level of warfarin with a certain amount of alcohol as long as it is not abused. Some people believe a 6 pack is abuse, I don't and I miss it and really would like an honest answer from a Dr or Pharmacist to solve this problem. Thank You,Steve

Alcohol is a blood thinner, as you know. But its effect is shorter. Depending on your condition:
Is it congenital?
What is your pt/inr range...2.0-3.0, 2.5+, 4.0+, 3.5+?
What caused your need for anticoagulatant therapy?
Consider this: Whilst on blood hinners you are more prone to bruising, bleeding in many areas. Not the least of which is intestinal, and joint, PLUS brain hemorrhage.
Joint bleeding can/will cause arthritis, enteric bleeding (intestinal) can cause rupture, tears, fissues, fistula, and unpleasantly hemorrhoids. Rectal bleeding while not be fun, and can have a number of future issues as well.
So, if you do choose to drink keep it to one or two in a day--and 3-6 TOTAL for a week. Whether you eat with the drink is important too.
If you can respond, and give me the details I can tell you whether daily drinks are benign, in general-- or dangerous. Some conditions won't be affected as much as others providing the cause.
Although, in general... A few drinks a week... A week... IF your required pt/inr is say 1.5-2.5 is acceptable...If it is about 2.5-3.5 then risky... The 'WHY' you are on it is very important to the answer...

My husband is in the hospital with a blood clot in the leg and prostrate problems. He is 84 years old and is a 6 pack a day beer drinker. I do not know if he has told the doctors this as they have put him on cumiden and cannot seem to be able to regulate his dose.

If I was told not to take Warfarin for a couple of days would consuming alcohol affect my upcoming INR test?
