Had a detached retina in 2009 in the right eye. When it happened, I felt a sharp pain, and it was like seeing through black pepper. Waited 3 weeks before having emergency surgery the day after seeing my doctor. Didn't realize it was serious. Now I'm paying for it with wavy lines 3 years later! Two operations to correct the detached retina. First was with silicone gel. Two months later it was to remove the gel and put in gas which caused a cataract. In between I had laser treatments twice to help solder the retina. The tear was close to the macula--I could have been blind. I won't discuss how I had to sleep and what position to be in for a month after each of those two operations. In any event, it was horrible (sore back included).
I was told myopic people (especially in their 60s) tend to have detached retinas.
On September 27, 2012 I got cataract surgery. The day after while wearing reading glasses, I saw double so I patched over the right lens. My local optician said there was too much diopters between the two eyes.
On October 22, got fitted with contact lens. Returned the next day as it seemed my right eye acted like the dominant eye. Could see but all that I read were all wavy (TV, computer screen, books, magazines). Optician said that I had to give my eye times to heal. He said it was like removing a cast from a leg. One can't walk right away as the leg needs to get stronger after physical therapy. He recommended one week later to be fitted with a multi-focal lens.

December 2007 had a sudden DR. only I was 45 years old) I I have always had benign floaters, but one day had a few more and the next day complete DR. Have had some wavy line distortion in central vision everr since gas bubble surgery... but all floaters were removed during surgery and have not returned. Eye doctor explained repiing a completely detatched retina is like putting loose wall paper back up on the wall..If all the paper paste( blood vessels, membranes etc in your eye) is not competely smooth when reattached, just like wall paper the wrinkles will be nodicable. In the case of vision it causes waivy sections of vision when reflecting light. it is almost impossible to have the retina lay smooth on re-attatchment. I have learned to adjust my vision and luckily the DR was not in my dominant eye. I try to let my good eye supplement more of my vision. I also have vision perception that seems to make images in my bad eye seem farther away by about 20 greater distance.I had cataract surgery last week...Asked DR if a lens to compensate for the distant vision issue could be used to compensate, but was advised it would be to much guess work and results may not be as good. Current vision is 20/80 uncorrected. Wish a stronger lense was used as I still will likely need corrective lense for that eye.Wavy lines actual seem more distinct visual acuity has increased with the new lense implant.F From my resurch almost all prognoses for this type of surgery have less than a perfect outcome. But since most of these issues are through no fault of our own, be thankful that we live in the times we do and that help is available... lense implant s were not even available until the 1950's and retinal surgery is light years more advanced than a generation ago. and also be thankful thaat we live in a country were these procedures are redily available. It is estimated 20 million people world wide ( mainly in under developed/ poorer countries) are blind due correctable cataract conditions. for as much as i wish this had not happened... It could be so much worse.

I had retina detachment and catharact surgery done to my right eye.
It has now been over one year and the waviness in vision still exists even after a second retinal surgery to get rid of the excess scar tissue which was not completely removed after the first surgery.
We have to learn to live with less that perfect vision.

My name is Mark and I had a vitrectomy and buckle on Dec. 13th. I was extremely careful about laying on my back while I had the gas bubble. So far no signs of a cataract. I still have some floaters, and a little waviness or movement occasionally in the far right of my eye. The doctor says everything looks good, but there isn't much info about what to expect during recovery. I guess without going through it, it could be hard to explain. I got my new glasses yesterday ad it does seem that they didn't completely correct my sight for upclose objects. Does anybosy else have any lifting restrictions? I was told not to lift anything that I had to strain to pick up, but my last visit about 3 weeks ago he said I could lift an elephant. I do notice if I do get my heart rate up sometimes that does ache a little. If anybody wants to talk more just reply here and thanks for all the info already posted!

Hi,
I had my RD surgery 3 weeks back. I have blurred, double vision in my right eye and see floaters when expose to bright lights. Does anyone know how much time it takes for the eye to appear in its normal (original) position/appearance? Also, what are the precautions one can take for the non formation of cataract?

Hello all
I had retinal detachment/surgury 2/12 years ago and still wavy lines and only about 5% vision. Sometimes think it would be better if eye was covered all the time with a patch..very tiring and frustrating. It sure has ruined my golf game..lol

Hi, I'd also like to know if there is anyone who has had retina detachment surgery and fully recovered vision without wavy lines and/or floaters. Thank you.

It's been nearly 4 years and still wavy lines. If not for the wavy lines I believe I would be At 20/20. Sux, cuz I can't do the things I used to with confidence, like drive a night on a dark road and my depth perception is off. If someone figure a way to get rid of the buckle I am all ears.

Hello everyone,
As of today (4-18-2013) I had my RD surgery five months ago.
My vision now is distort and waviness. I am waiting everyday to see if it improves, but not yet (same to day one).
If anyone has improved, please post. Thanks and good luck to all.

If it has been just two weeks it is nothing to be worried about. He will recover soon and have a perfect vision. This is normal after an eye surgery as eyes are very sensitive.
