Well, reading all these posts just convince me even more that this Mirena has got to go!!!! I had mine inserted in June 2008 at which time I weighed a heafty 175, now it is 15 months later and I now weigh a humongous 220!!!! I actually eat less and try to exercise more, but I have also noticed besides the 45lbs of wt gain, I have no energy, terribly oily hair and skin, acne for the first time in my life (I am 33 yrs old!), NO sex drive at all and my breasts have went from 36B to 40D. The only positive thing about this IUD for me has been the absence of periods. The only other birth control to do this for me was the depo shot (which everyone said caused wt gain but it didn't for me) I'd go back to it but my new OB/GYN doesn't like to prescribe it.
I can not wait until I can finally have this thing removed!! I just hope to find something else to take it's place that will not make me bigger!

Hello. My story is common to most of the post on here. I had my IUD inserted March 2007 and I too have had weight gain, extra vaginal wetness (and a jelly discharge), mood swings, depression, no sex drive and other side effects. I went to the IUD because I was over medicated on the depo-provera shot. Instead of getting it every 3 months I had it every 2 months with extra pills of hormones daily.
Things that happened to me that strike me as odd was the following: :'(
I had my thyroid checked in Jan 2007 and it was normal by July 2007 I was in surgery having a total thyroid removal. MY weight still climbed. Last year April 2008 I had to under go double massectomies with immediate reconstruction. I am only 29 years old and think most of my problems stemmed from the IUD/ depo shot. I had horrible breast pain with lumps after the insertion...things steadily worsened for me. I went to my OBGYN on mutiple occasions to have it removed with her reasurring me that the IUD was not the problem. Still to this day she talks me out of it when I go in for my annual. I made an appointment with a clinic to have it removed on Friday.
Does anyone have a suggestion for a good birth control after the removal?
How long does it take for the weight to start coming off?

Hi All, I am 44 years old and have three children 11, 9 and 7.
After gaining 25 pounds in one year (inserted Sept 2008 and now removing it Sept 22nd 2009) and feeling and looking pregnant.
I must state emphatically I will take my 5 to 7 day period over the weight gain, acne, bloat, moodiness and basically a light spotty period. I am disgusted that my MD did not believe my IUD caused my weight gain and after reading several blogs I am even more upset that the NP could not find the IUD last week to remove it as it has disappeared up the cervical Os. Interesting is that the NP does not recommend hormonal IUDss!!!
This serious overload of hormones must not be good for most women and these side effecs should be posted in their literature which they are NOT..ah well now to talk my honey into the snip snip...

I see the last post was 9/2009- so where did everybody go? I, too would like to hear more about what happens after the mirena comes out. I am going to get mine out next Tues.
I have always been petite- average 125 lbs. After I had my sone 12/07- I got the mirena. My baby weight came off within a few months- however, I was nursing at the time. As soon I stopped nursing, I started to balloon. I am up to 155- and it is FAT. So much fat around my thighs and butt- my boobs went from a 36D to a 36DDD. I think this is what has caused the depression for me. I just canceled my gym membership after 1 year- no results.
I will be back on here after I have it removed to let everyone know what happens. I hope its not 2 years worth of periods! Good Luck to everyone!!!{genna}

I have had my IUD in since July of 2009 and I am ready to get rid of it! I have put on 20 pounds while training for a marathon!!! I think that there is a strong correlation between the fact that the progesterone hormone slows down your bowels and then over stresses your liver. When your liver is overstressed you don't process foods correctly and therefore the weight gain. I'll let you know what happens when I have mine taken out.

I have also had a lot of problems with weight gain since the mirena was put in. I am at 2 1/2 years now and I am just seeing a result from my work at exercise and diet to lose the weight. I had lost all of my baby weight before I got the Mirena but then I gained almost 20 pounds in one month after the procedure and another 10 pounds in the following year. I was eating exactly the same diet as I normally do so that did not seem to be the problem. In the last 6 months I have lost 28 pounds but I have had to cut my calorie intake below 1200 a day and exercise regularly to maintain this.
I have also noticed an extreme decrease in my sexual appetite and I have often wondering if it is due to now being a mother or the implant. I have never had this problem with any other type of birth control.
Has anyone else noticed a decrease in their sexual appetite?

Just found this website for weight loss. I'm already doing cardio excercise 4 days/week, and will try to add more yoga and a sauna. But will definetley have to change my diet even more. If after six months I still look like I'm four months pregnant (never had kids before, so this is a totally new body shape for me), I'm getting the Mirena out.

I can't believe what I am reading...it is like I am reading a page from my own life! I have gained 10 pounds since November(iud inserted). I work out regularly, eat healthy and I just keep gaining. I never gain weight in my stomach and my stomach now is so bloated and fat. I have increased breakouts and my face and hair look dull. I have been going crazy over this. I have switched face products, increased my workouts to everyday, decreased my calorie intake and keep steadily gaining weight. I just got on the scale the other day and began to cry to my husband because no matter how hard I work, I am gaining weight.
I am 37, have 3 kids, 5'4" and I usually weigh between 118 (when I am working out, dieting) and 128 (my heaviest when not working out, after holidays, etc). I just weighed myself again and I am 136 pounds! I am working out and dieting! This is crazy. I love the freedom but I am so depressed with this weight gain.
I have been feeling so out of touch with my body and so out of control. I can't thank you all enough for posting. I wish more people would post their results.
I am making my appt for removal TODAY!!!

I too am starting to wonder about my iud. I look 6 months pregnant from being bloated all the time. I've always been slim even after two children but whatever I do (since having the Mirena) the weight won't shift. Had it now for 18 months and going to have it out! Has anyone seen a weight loss due to having iud removed?

Yes, I lost 18 pounds over seven months after having the Mirena removed. It was so frustrating exercising and not seeing the scale move. My husband finally told me to "Get it out." Let's face it ladies your husband would rather have you thin and sexy than spontaneous sex. I switched back to the copper and have been a happy camper. Pretty peeved that I was bamboozled by the lighter period story. I can proudly say I am back into a size 5. The Mirena does make you fat, and if fat is where you want to be, keep it. It's not your metabolism it is the Mirena. It hurts to get an IUD. I was so mad at my provider for talking me into it.

I had the Mirena inserted February 2007 four month's after I had my third daughter. I was 167 at the time it was inserted. I am now 180 and no matter how much I exercise and diet the weight will not come off. I have migraines pretty often, mood swings and no sex drive. I look like I'm 5 month's pregnant and none of my clothes fit right anymore. My husband has been telling me for month's to take it out and I have finally made up my mind to do so. I am calling them tomorrow to have this monster of an IUD removed. Anyone who says that is doesn't cause weight gain doesn't know what they're talking because this thing definitely causes weight gain. I'd rather have my tubes tied and have a period rather than deal with all the issues the Mirena comes with.

You're not alone!
I have had my IUD in for @16 months. After the birth of my son I Lost all my weight and my Husband was always commenting on how I didn't even look as if I had our 2nd son. after 6 months still lean I decided to make things easier and have the IUD inserted. What a poor choice on my behalf. I started having cramping, bloating, mood swings, low sex drive etc... the weight gain just kept on coming(14lbs). I would eat right and was at the gym 4 to 5 times a week and even on my LINDORA eating plan and would not lose!! I became depressed and confused and was spiraling out of control. I would start 1 diet and no results to then another. The bloating of my mid section concerned me also. But what made it worse was when the last 4 months I had it in I noticed pre cycle time that I was getting a numbness/pain in my lower back through my left thigh and down my leg! It was annoying and painful. I immediately made an appointment with my Dr.
I went in pre cycle and the numbness/pain was starting*but did not tell the Dr.* She said the IUD may be pressing on a nerve, but checked and it was in a good area, then stated I never heard such a thing??!! She also stated that Mirena IUD doesn't cause weight gain?? GO FIGURE~ how much is the Manuf. paying them? SO she did take it out on 6/14/10. She said if I notice it wasn't the IUD giving me the numbness/pain that she will re insert another one when I am ready. ***So I am walking out the office and driving home and WOW my numbness & pain were gone!!!!!! I have had light spottiing- NO cramps, and I am already feeling normal again! MY mid section has already gone back to normal and I am optimistic that the weight will be coming off! I will keep you posted!
Ladies BEWARE and listen to your body!

I am 25, and I had mirena put in after my second son in feb. 2009 I had lost all of the baby weight and was back down to my regular weight which is between 155 -160.. I'm also 5'10". I've had mirena in for 19 months and have gained over 40 lbs!! I don't ever have energy and just don't feel happy with myself. I even went on a strict diet with exercise and ended up gaining!! This isn't me, and it causing depression..I weigh more than when I was 9 month prego with both my kids. The only thing positive about mirena is my menstrual cycle, don't have one sometimes occasional spotting, but if it comes down to dealing with a period or these extra pounds, I'm going for period. I will be making appt. W/ OB asap to get this out!!!-britAZ

I am 23 years old and i have 2 kids. I got the iud put in after my second child because i needed something that i wouldnt have to worry about taking everyday and worry about missing a day. So the mirena was the best for me. TO BE HONEST THE MIRENA IS NOT FOR ME!!! and may not be for some other woman. any and all the symptoms you can possible have with the iud i have had. the weight gain the bloating the acne the cramping, really bad mood swings, no sex drive at all. i get frusterated really fast. i have been losing hair and im hungry all the time like i have a tape worm or something. im excessivley tired!!! i dont ever want to do anything anymore. thats not like me at all. i also have weird flutters in my stomach like im prego or something and i test and it comes back negative. i get bad headaches to and with my job i work with a lot of people in customer service and im moody. so the mirena will be removed on the 24th of this month! i will update you guys to let you know whats going on and my status.
