I completely understand your frustration. I also have an ideal weight of 135 and have been stuck at 152 for quite a while now. I cut out all breads, wheat and most sugars, exercise daily (including weight training and running approx. 12-15 miles/wk.). Nothing works. I am tired and cranky, puffy too. I have had hypothyroidism for 10 years now and am still on only 0.5 ug. I feel that I am not receiving a high enough dose although the doctors say that I am okay. I have friends with hypothyroidism that are half my size, rarely get tired and can eat normal. Yet I can still out-exercise them any day of the week. If anyone has something that has worked for them, I would be appreciate the information!

I am having the same problem. Only I just re-located and need a job so I can get to a doctor to even get the synthroid. Now I am just blowing up. Does anyone know how i can get the medicine via some type of donation from a charity or something?

Dear People: Like you I suffer with Hypothyroidism. I was generally 5'2, 140 lbs til 2001. Every year after that I kept gaining and nothing was coming off no matter how active I was. I finally told the doc - hey something is wrong! I have weighed 190 lbs for 8 years and that scale has not moved in your office. It's now 2008--Please do a blood test; something is wrong. I am gaining weight and eat 900 calories or less a day- sent me for blood test to rule out hypothyroidism. Office nurse called me with the results: You have hypothyroidism and it's a "b***h", (exact words) well Dr. put me on Synthroid starting at 75mg. in 2008 The weight has melted off.............My dosage has increased since then because he was not happy with my levels. Want you to know I weigh 125 lbs and gain weight on weekends but I weigh myself daily and I get back to 125 by Tuesday. The synthroid works for weight loss. However - It makes your hair fall out - big time. My hair and nails are SOooooooooooooo brittle. But wait - there's a pill for that too - but it's not working - just another money maker - its called Spironolactone 100 mg. But I see no difference and I have been on it for 1 year now doubling up. There are 10 or 11 symptoms for hypothyroidism - get the list. I only suffer with the hair loss and brittle nails. Perhaps I have been misdiagnosed and have something else - But wait - there's a pill for that too. I'm thinking of going the alternative way - my boss is a doctor also and he does not think I have hypothyroidism and he feels it can be reversed. I also power walk to tone up my body and do weight training...............good luck and don't give up. Read up on this illness - they are always coming out with somet1hing new - if your not happy get a 2nd or even a 3rd opinion........................There's No Pill for That.....yet !!

Seriously, all the diet and excercise in the world won't help you lose a single pound if your hypothyroid... its so frustrating. I was diagnosed a couple years ago, started synthroid, eventually increased from 25 to 88 over time and even at 88 I still couldn't lose weight + still had irregular menstrual cycles...(tsh = 1.45, seemingly "normal"). Well, finally I changed doctors and increased synthroid even more, 125, now 175... + added cytomel (up to 25mcgs x 3 times a day). Sounds like a lot of pills but finally feel normal now!! back to my normal weight, have lots of energy, etc. Of course every time I increase synthroid I get road ragey + anxious for a couple weeks but then it passes...anyway my only advice is don't go by blood tests, go by how you feel. And for me, the weight loss was not linear to how much synthroid I took, rather I had to surpass the 'hump' before I lost weight.

i have hypothyroidism as well, i am 21 yrs old now i was diagnosed when i was 15 , i gained 30 lbs in 3 months and had horrible symtoms of fatigue , shortness of breath, heart palpations , ect.. but as soon as i was diagnosed correctly i lost all the weight i had gained and quick. So those struggling with weight loss i would say your prescription is wrong! i am on 100mg and have been for 2 yrs and my levels are still normal, i still gain weight if i overeat so dont think that if you are on synthroid that you will never gain weight cause thats def. false. but it does help in making me feel normal and energized. So just hang in there if you are still struggling and i would recommend checking with your thyroid doctor on any questions you have.

Hello...I was just told I have Hyperthyroid in the last few months....I went in because like you I had puffy eyes, face, ankles....at first My GP thought water retention. when water pills did nothing...he did blood work and my thyroid levels came back as being high. I then went to a endocrinologist...he did his own blood work....we discussed the three different treatments and I chose ablation by radio active iodine...my undertsanding was it would kill off the cells in the thyroid therefore making my "Hypo"....I have an appointment in august to begin hormone replacement theropy....I just dont know what the medication will be. The radiologist said more then likely synthroid...ive gaine about 55-60lbs because my thyroid is not producing properly...I would like to shed these extra pounds and not gain more. I felt good at 180 being 5'9....but 234 is making everyday things harder and harder...not to mention my asthema

I too suffer from hypo-thyroidism......it is extremely frustrating for me when I eat a really good diet, exercise and see a holistic dr. Yet I'm still up 22 lbs. NEVER in my life have I had a weight problem and now I feel awful about myself. To the person who commented it's about being lazy you are apparanty ignorant to hypothyroid disease. people are affected differently and I hope the weight gain doesn't affect you someday. If anybody knows more that I can do PLEASE help!

I agree, in the last year I turned 50, continued taking my 100mmg a day, still exercise and eat well and yet have gained 30 pounds for no reason, diet and exercise is not always the issue alone.

I wish I knew when you wrote your questions. I have the same problem and am looking for answers. I had my my thyroids taken out in 2010 due to cancer in my right side. I gained 50 pounds after being diagnosed. I take 225 mg of the hormone Leventhrotism (not sure on spelling). Have you found anything as yet. I have been on an Almased diet, which I have used for over ten years with great success. I have not gone on my scale as yet but I am pretty sure I haven't lost anything this time around.

I have hypothyroid too and struggled with the weight for many years. I was up to 202 pounds and I am now at 177. I went to weight watchers. IT WORKS!!!, I also incorporated, berries, nuts and diet green tea into my diet with plenty of water. I eat salad everyday . My doctor told me to just walk and not excercise, and guess what, the weight is coming off!!! I hope this helps!! Hypo for over ten years!
