I take synthroid 150mmg daily. Both my parents are doctors but I could never ask them this actually might worry them I guess. I know when your not eating your metabolism decreases to converse fat or something, but my metabolism without this pill doesnt work anyway. I was just wondering if because I'm taking the pill my metabolism would stay fast is I were to restrict my calorie intake significantly. Also I dont know if taking an extra pill every other day or so would also help boost my metabolism and burn fat? Or if there are any dangerous side effects.

Yes, that is a problem because a hypothyroidism often leads to weight gain. Sure, with a dosage of Synthroid, your metabolism should normalize and you should be able to lose weight. But sometimes, diet pills in the combination with this, are not the solution for this, so you should really be careful. Sometimes, when you have an underactive thyroid, those pills can have a yo-yo effect and instead of losing weight, you can gain weight. And you don't want that. Sure, every pill has a side - effect, so I am sure that Synthroid and diet pills are not an exception. Just be careful.

there is a reason your taking 150mmg. Taking more than you are prescribed will make it more difficult to sleep, concentrate. If you take too much synthroid you will become hyperthyroid and have weird heart palpitations, nervousness, insomnia and fatigue.
Try eating properly and creating a regular fitness routine.

I'm sure she never thought of diet and exercise, what a revelation! I am on synthroid (the recommended dose) and it is VERY difficult for me to lose weight. Having a metabolic disorder like hypothyroidism isn't helped by snarky comments that intimate that diet and exercise must be the reason it's so tough to lose weight! If you do not have hypothyroidism, take your comments to another discussion board that is about weight and fitness in general. If you do take synthroid, then you know how frustrating it can get not being able to drop the weight without double or triple the amount of effort it should.

I'm SO tired of "normal" people commenting about how we lazy folk just need to get off our fat butts.

I totally agree with what you're saying. I don't think people realize how difficult it is to have hyperthyroidism and it's a good idea to be sensitive in this dicussion about it. I didn't have anything else to contribute unfortunately, but I did want to support you in saying that it can be frustrating, and I'm sorry that people think you're lazy. I sure as hell don't!

I HATE people using hypothyroidism as an excuse! I am Hypo, I put in the work and stay at a healthy weight. Hypothyroidism is like every other struggle in life, you can use it as something to hold you back, or you work a little harder and get the results you want. Taking your medicine wrong is only going to mess things up. DIET AND EXERCISE are the only answer. Why would you ever tell someone it's okay to abuse their prescriptions....seriously?

Well hell. I am hypo (bad too...my TSH when I went in was 154.5), and I cannot gain ANY weight. Oh sure, I was puffy as all get out when I was Hyper real bad (puffy eyes, face, and throat). However, after getting my TSH down, my weight started dropping, and dropping, and dropping. I went from 187lbs. and are now 145lbs. (on a good day).

I have a good grasp on the dealings of the situation. Unfortunately, it seems my constant adjustments of my meds are correlated with the continued weight loss. As I lose more weight, I need less Synthroid. Problem is, I was stable for a year (so I thought). Now, I go in and get my blood drawn, TSH is very low and they lower my dose. After a while, I loose more weight and need an even lower dose. I haven't had my blood drawn for 3 months, but based on my weight I'd say it needs to come down yet again(synthroid dose).

Don't know why I am losing weight, maybe just a slow adjustment to the proper hormone levels. I almost believe I would rather have my TSH a little high (say 10 or so), simply because I feel a little better when I am heavier.

Hey, I'm hypo myself, I also had the cancer with three rounds of radiation, thank God for now I'm ok. Unfortunitly I also have CHF, congestive heart failure. So when my levels go low or high it affects my heart then I get into some trouble so if I don't act on it then I will end up in the hospital. So talking about weight loss, BOY, is it a hassle. I weighted 232 and now my weight veries from 190 to 195 I have to weigh myself all the time, also my parathyroid has failed me and no longer produces the calcium my body needs, so I not only take 2 different synthroids, also I take meds for the heart, and now they diagnosed me with RA and Osteoporosis in my back. I just thank God I'm alive. Don't worry about your weight guys, worry about what you do have and thank God you have your family and lives!!!!

I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism 8 months ago. I am currently on .75mcg a day. I have, like the rest of you been struggling to get my weight down to were it use to be. I have never had a weight problem until I was diagnosed with Hypothyroidism. I was wondering if anyone has found any research with regards to increasing serotonin or other hormones in the body to help regulate the thyroid. There has got to be something out there that can help with this disease. My skin, hair, and nails look dry and fragil and I look older than I am. I work out four days a week and also do kick boxing two days a week, I eat great no garbage. I get so frustrated and depressed that no matter what I do I cant get back to ME. My ideal weight is 135 lbs, I have jumped up to 165 and cannot shake it. Any advise or research anyone has would be greatly appreciated.

Hi - I also have been diagnosed with a thyroid issue. I am 41 yrs old - was diagnosed about 6 months ago. I am NOT on Synthroid. My doctor suggested it, but I am trying to find organic/holistic treatment instead. Vitamins, minerals, exercise, good sleep. Boy it has been tough. I am 5'5" and normally 135 lbs or so - but over the past 2 yrs I have been struggling with weight, and fatigue. I actually had to beg my doctor to test me for a thyroid issue - she didn't think I was anything but "borderline low" Well, once she got my results back she basically said "yep, your thyroid is broken." Ugh. About 2 yrs ago I was seeing a personal trainer, working out 4-5X a week (2x a week with my trainer) and doing the Weigth Watchers plan. Well, in 3 months I lost a whopping 7 lbs... not good. Normally, I'd easily lose 1.5-2 lbs per week. So, for those of you who had gained weight.. did the Synthroid actually help you lose the weight? Did you find you had more energy once getting on the meds? Did you have any side effects? I seem to be gaining about 2 lbs a month. Kind of scary to think that I could gain 24 lbs a year! But I have gained 25 lbs in the past 20 months. I am trying not to get depressed about it... but could use some support, advice, etc. I have always been a thin person - size 6 and now I am struggling with a new self-image and looking at size 12 jeans! I love my life, have a super supportive hubby and 3 amazing kids, but still, as women we all know how hard it is to be happy with weight gain.

Oh and a quick p.s. I travela ton for work... usually on the road every qweek, working long hours, and don't always have time to work out - and eating on the go is the norm when I travel. Any advice on how to get some good workouts in with limited time frames? Thank you!! :-D

I am 16 and I just learned that I have a hypothyriod. I have always had anemia but now it is worse, I also have problems with mood instibility, depression and I have chronic constipation(really embarrassing). Also, I am training for a national swim meet and I just can't get my weight down. I am not heavy but I practice 5.5 hrs a day and I only eat 1500 calories a day, when I should be eating like 3,500. Yet I am still chubby-ish. I just dont understand hypo and does it have anything to do with any of this?

Hey I know what you mean about just being happy that your alive, and I'm sorry to hear that you have heart troubles and all the other things you have. Unfortunately I don't have any information on this topic. I am actually in the process of researching this disease hyperparathyroidism and magnesium deficiency. My boyfriend has been in and out of hospitals since he was 15 years old with heart troubles, digestive issues, migranes, scoliosis etc. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing your symptoms that led to this diagnosis. I believe my boyfriend has something wrong with his body that is affecting all of his organs and causing them to not work properly. We are still constantly going to hospitals, but we aren't getting anywhere and we still don't have a diagnosis or a medication that is treating him. One thing that makes him severely worse and he goes into shock is having any kind of alcohol. Does this happen with any of you guys? Any information helps Thank you.
