Have you considered the dessicated thyroid--made from pigs' thyroids? I started on the synthroid but I felt peculiar, so after talking to my pharmacist, I asked my doctor to change me over. As usual, it took some tinkering to get the dosage right for me. Now I feel fine with sufficient energy but if I miss my dose I get very sleepy and disoriented. I find that if I stay away from breads, including whole grain, white rice, all flour products and keep up the cooked vegetable intake, I can lose some weight. It's not like it used to be before I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism--and I am 65--but if I stay on the straight and narrow, life is good. Still, I can gain weight very quickly if I'm off the rails and each time I gain it, it's harder to get back. It's a disciplined life or else.

Hi - I know its been a while but I need to know if you figured something out. I have Graves, thyroid nuked about 7-8 years ago... I an almost 59 years old and have started good clean diet and daily exercise since JUN2013. From mar2013-mar2014, mostly in summer and fall of 2013, i dropped 40, I danced 40-60 minutes close to everyday. -- I quit smoking in Feb2014, i stick to diet and started doing Turbo Jam and Jillian Michaels 30 day shred, I use dumbbells 5-8 lbs. I am just starting this new phase of exercise but really I stopped losing by end of Dec. I am able to maintain, I have lowered food intake and doing killer exercises 2x a day, scale is stuck.I did lose inchs but I want to see the scale move.. My TSH did go up but not enough for doc to do anything. I still have at min another 40lbs to go this year, maybe 40 next. I am getting discouraged,,, please do not send any 'know it all comments, from NON- Graves or HYPO persons. I have TED which is aggravated by allergies and am taking lots of antihistimines, I know this can cause weight gain. Again, I am doing everything 'for real' and then some but this year nothing seems to be happening..

I'm in the same boat. If you watch what you eat or lower your calories you will lose more weight. However, if you take more than prescribed, you Dr. will only lower your dose because your blood will tell him the numbers and he will see that they are too high and then you will really be in a bad way! Stay on your correct dose, it will help you lose weight much easier with a good diet.

Take the synthroid. Not taking it is much like a diabetic refusing to use insulin. If you was to try a route that may support natural process better then find an ND and wirk with them and your family physician. In the mean time...take the synthroid.

I totally agree with you. I have been battling with Hashimoto's Thyroiditis for years. In the past 2 months I have gained too much weight WHILE dieting and doing Zumba which is very intense. Just got re-checked and my levels are still low so they have increased my Synthroid for the second time in 2 months. People see me and just assume I let myself go. Sometimes I feel like wearing a sign announcing that I have a thyroid disorder!

I took synthroid for hypothyroidism for12 years. From 42 years to 54years of age. In that twelve years I gained 35 pounds on a low fat 1900cal. a day diet with daily (1-3 hours) running or cycling. I was always hungry. My B12 was always low and I had to have injections as tablets could not be absorbed by an ever increasing unhealthy GI tract. I finally went to a naturopath who said to start eating healthy oils and fats and stop eating grains and refined sugars. She introduced me to chia seeds and hemp hearts, both high in omega 3 oil, which I eat 3 teaspoons each for breakfast daily. After one year I no longer needed synthroid as my thyroid began to work very well once again. After 18 months of following the directive of the naturopath I lost 35 pounds and never felt hungry...ever! B12 levels are normal and steady. The unhealthy GI tract is still an issue though. I have learned to eat foods that do not have a list of ingredients...but this is going off the topic.
From my own experience, when I included foods high in fat/oils (seeds, avocados, eggs, organic grass fed beef, lamb and pork) along with heaps of vegetables my thyroid health returned.

Thanks I appreciate your sharing your success story. I tried working out excessively and keeping my calorie intake under 1,000 calories a day. I will do weight watchers and walk. I will buy a walk at home DVD for rainy or snowy days. When you have a disorder like Hypothyroidism you are no longer normal and you must find what works for you. It not easy and this is for the rest of your life! It's easy to post watch what you eat and just get up, workout if you don't have a clue about Hypothyroidism. It a struggle for life.

I've just been diagnosed with hypo as I've had my thyroid removed for papillary cancer. Before this my TSH levels came back normal. However I was clearly suspicious that something was wrong due to weight gain, fatigue, migraines and low body temperature. I've been told that even on synthroid my weight may stay the same. It's also important to be under the care of an endocrinologist. TSH are not the only levels they will look at. It's important to have T3 & T4 testing done as well. From what I'm reading it's so difficult to find a good medical doctor who will listen and step outside the boundaries of protocol. This is all very new to me, so I'm thankful for blogs like this to help me raise the right questions. Good luck to everyone.
