I too have the kaleidoscope flashing light shape. Mine dissipates after a short amount of time and leaves me sensitive to light for a bit. It usually comes after I play hockey, but sometimes not. There have been only three cases that I remember where I wasn’t doing anything strenuous and it occurred. What’s really interesting is that my eyesight is amazing like others here have mentioned about themselves. So there may be something to this.
At a recent family reunion I spoke with my aunt who is has been an ER nurse for the past 15 years, and she thinks the condition is not actually related to the eyes. Her rationale for why the flashing light isn’t an issue with the eyes (in my case at least) is that the flashing still occurs when I shut my eyes. The light should normally go away if I closed them, but it doesn’t so that rules out an eye issue. She also said that it may be due to low blood sugar or low/high blood pressure transition. She said that if the flashing light persists beyond the normal duration of time to call emergency medical services, because it’s different than normal and could be life threatening. The longest incident for me was about 45 minutes and the shortest was about 6 minutes. Anything longer than 30 minutes and I really get scared. Your body is different than mine, and if you get them as often as I do you know how bad an episode will be from the “tingle”.
My solution when I get them is to remain stationary in a dark area and drink water or a sports drink. Since I get them after I play hockey I’m usually driving when they occur. I’ve had to pull over and wait them out in the past. Find somewhere safe and wait it out.
I’ve been dealing with this for over 10 years now, and no doctor has been able to answer my question of what it is. It’s just a part of life that I deal with.

Hi, I get alot of eye irritation and the strobe lights and kolidascope thing only at night. You must understand that eye irritiation of any kind doesn't just affect the eyes. I have a back problem which affects my discs and is very painful , and the first thing my consulting rheumatologist asked me was if I had strained my eyes in any way. Such as repetative strain, (staying up too late), or frequent use of computers and things. I do have bowel problems and eye irritation does occur quite frequently so I'm assuming this is the reason, have had my eyes checked and they are fine just the slightest stigmatism in one but not noticable and doesn't seem to be getting worse thankfully. So make sure you have them checked regulary if you have any concerns about your eyes.
