I'm 54 years old and I woke up this morning with the same thing. I don't know what happened - It feels bruised on the outer part of my ear and hurts at the base of my ear when I chew food. What can cause this? It's driving me crazy.

The most common problem is an ear pimple or black head found in the folds of the cartlidge of the outer ear. This is why it is painful when pressure is applied such as sleeping on your side and why doctors cannot find anything medically wrong with your ear. Inspect your ear and pin point the pain. Use a warm face cloth to wipe the folds of the cartlidge and soften and black heads or pimples. If the black head or pimple is found then in should be squeezed a little everyday until it is ready. Some pimples may be "blind pimples" and cannpt be seen but the pain at a certain point can be felt. THe black head or pimple causes the gathering of fluid under the skin and is a sharp shooting pain. Don't pay thousands to have a doctor tell you you have a rare disease! Simply clean your ears everyday! they are covered in SKIN after all. Hope this helps

That is absolutely not what it is.

I have had this for 10 yrs. I get it only in my right ear and pain is triggered for me one of two ways:

1. I sleep on the ear
2. I touch my ear and can feel a subtle click in the cartridge.

The only thing that helps once this happens is a heating pad on the ear. It usually takes care of the problem in a reasonable amount of time.

What condition is it?? Seems like no one on this blog knows. I suspect it has to do with either a cartidge issue or something getting displaced like a disc in ones jaw, but the latter i doubt. Whatever it ease, when heat is applied it cause the blood to flow and somehow temporarily cures the symptoms. I really wish I could figure this out once and for all.

I've had this for 20 years; horrible burning, aching, lingering outer ear pain when I sleep on them, but only occasionally- maybe once a month. I've also had my gall bladder out for 20 years. I wonder...

So, the gall bladder question...   I had mine out  about 2 yrs ago, after more than 10 yrs of problems, which incidently is about the same length of time I've had the ear pain. Well, for at least 8 months after the surgery I had no ear pain at all! I thought I was home free! Then I had a short episode or two. Then  more than a year after the G.B. surgery, the ear pain returned with such strength and frequency, I went to my  new young GP for help. She had never heard of such a thing [my previous GP had retired] and referred me to an ear/nose/throat guy. He was openly baffled.  He listened intently to my story, and I'm sure he believed what I said. But he had no idea what the actual cause could be.  The severe pain and duration and frequency eventually subsided, and I have only had the occasional flareup.  I'm  now using a piece of pricey memory foam as a pillow, and have not had even a single 'close call'. It's been about 3 months.

I am 56, female and do have lower back pain,.Boy, it is amazing that after 30+ years of having this pain in my right ear, i find this blog and know i am not crazy!! I always tell my husband it feels like i "broke" my ear. For the longest time it was always when i slept on my right side. So i have stopped sleeping on that side. This least year or two it started happening when i was awake without any touching of the ear. Like earlier this evening, I barely touched the Back of my ear and thought, here it comes. Went to bed, taking my pain pill for shoulder surgery, thinking that would help, but woke up 4 1/2 hours later almost in tears. So at 2:30am i get on my phones browser, and looked it up again. (i have researched it before, just never asked using the right description) after reading this blog, i guess it is useless to see a dr. About it. I did try the damp clothe and lotion, neither work, i guess i will go back to sleep and hope it is gone when i wake.
I am just glad i am not crazy!

I have shingles on the right side of my face and have suffered outer ear pain with it. The blisters are mostly on my lips and in my mouth. Apparently it is possible to have the pain of shingles without spots!! Maybe that is your problem.

I have had this quite a few times recently and was diagnosed with MS and trigeminal neuralgia last week. Was wondering if this ear pain is part of the TN pain as it's always the same side as I experience pain in my jaw.

My Rheumatologist was just asking me the other day if I had ear pain, red swollen ears at the top, especially in the morning, nose pain or rib/chest pain; these are all signs of relapsing polychondritis a condition that starts with inflammation, redness, and pain in the outer ear.

This is an excerpt from Medicinenet explaining the symptoms:

"Typically, relapsing polychondritis causes sudden pain in the inflamed tissue at the onset of the disease. Common symptoms are pain, redness, swelling, and tenderness in one or both ears, the nose, throat, joints, and/or eyes. The lobe of the ear is not involved. Fever, fatigue, and weight loss often develop."

If you have these symptoms with the ear pain, you will want visit an internist, Rheumatologist, or regular doctor to have lab tests for this and/or other auto-immune disorders since they often overlap. I have been suffering with an autoimmune disorder for two years and am just now getting it properly diagnosed and treated. My doctor said autoimmune disorders are like a jigsaw puzzle and it can take years to put all the symptoms together. I hope this helps!

Just found your post, whatever happened after your surgery???

Well, for awhile I thought I'd won the battle. No ear pain at all for about 7-8 months. It was wonderful! Then one night, a minor attack. Maybe a month later another minor attack, but a bit worse than the first. Then for a time the attacks were really bad, so my new, young G.P sent me to an E.N.T. Since that time I've had enough episodes to say that they still happen, but you know what? They really aren't nearly as sever or as frequent as before the G.B. surgery. I think the memory foam pillow is helping, too. Coincidence? [I did post a bit similar to this a few months back, but thanks for asking anyway]

My symptoms are exactly the same and no back problems either. I however did read of one other person that had nasal congestion or swelling in the nasal passages every evening, as do I. I do have a solution that I am currently trying, will let you know:)
