I went to a pain specialist after 20 years of looking for an answer. What IS this? The pain specialist took a different approach and thought MAYBE it was related to an interior ear virus. Like zoster. So he prescribed Valtrex. I took the Valtrex for one month. I went 5 solid years with no recurrence. I suddenly began experiencing the pain again and went back on the Valtrex. No more issues until recently. I am online here to see if anyone has found newer information.

This is exactly how I would describe mine! What is it? Years of novicane from dental work was one guess of mine. So glad it is temporary!

Hi! I just read this as I was searching for a diagnosis/cause of extreme ear pain (mostly outer) and I could not figure out for the life of me what caused it....but I broke my tailbone 6 months ago and have been experiencing LOTS of back pain and tailbone pain. So crazy that you had something similar! I never would have related the two!

Rediculous, I have this's pain as well, it is nerve pain , not skin pain. It comes and goes at will. The only thing I noticed, is poor fitting reading glasses that press against the side of my head behind my ears MAY. agrivate it.
My chiropractor confirms this area is full of passing nerves close to the skin because of your scull.
She is able to help .

That is what mine feels like, I can best describe it as a bunch of spiders crawling on my ear but I can't make them go away. They treated it as shingles and it got better but did not go away and is getting worse again.

I am a healthy 34 yo female. I get debilitating pain in my helix at least twice a month. It can happen at anytime. Never at night but it's VERY painful for about 10 seconds or so. And I mean painful. I can be driving and will almost wreck because I close my eyes in pain. I pinch my helix and rub rub rub...then it's over. HELP ME!!

Me too! I went to doctors, dentist, the ent at Duke said i'm having migraine in my ear (!?) Physician says tmj, denist said it would go away after root canal (it didnt) It hurts during the day, it kills me when I wake up and my ear is folded (omg...it's the worst), it feels like a Charlie horse in my ear during the day. At night when I wake up and unfold my ear, it's excruciatingly painful.

I have the same issue. Mine is usually caused by pushing my earlobe too hard in its opposite direction, probably overextending the cartilage causing excruciating pain. But your suggestions of pulling on the lobe ever so carefully in different directions is the best suggestion yet and seems to be effective over time. All this other stuff about back pain, infections ,etc I don't think are not related to our problem.

I have been reading about 3 pages of these posts and as a student of Traditional Chinese medicine I can see a pattern here that makes a lot of sense. Many of you are describing symptoms that appear with what we call a 'Kidney deficiency' in Chinese medicine. The fact that you get relief from rubbing creams to the area, or applying heat, and rubbing, just means that you are stimulating or warming the accompanying channel (meridian) in your body that is related to the ear. We say that the 'kidney' opens into the ear. The ear is a fascinating thing to us TCM people. Its also interesting to note that many of you say this happens in the late day or night - this is when the Kidney channel is most active around 5-7pm. You can actually search on the internet for ear diagrams in TCM and see what the associated organ or problem is with your ear.
Here's a brief list of POSSIBLE symptoms that go with a Kidney disorder (don't panic - it is probably not serious but could be the longer it goes on).
List:
Back and lumbar issues
Knee weakness or soreness
Hearing issues/tinnitus
Bladder issues
Throat illnesses/weaknesses
Breast lumps
Solar plexus/diaphragm issues
IBS/constipation/diahhrea
Fluid issues/edema
Infertility
Leg issues - shin bone, swollen ankles, sore feet
Varicose veins
Vertigo
Blurred vision

Press your thumb into the middle of the sole of your foot and see if its sore, sensitive or painful. If yes, then this could be your answer. Go see a TCM practitioner and ask about your kidneys. I could be wrong but it sure does look to me like the pieces of this puzzle all add up. Hope this helps.

BTW - just because you've had a Gall bladder removed, this does not fix the root cause of what first affected your Gall Bladder nor the symptoms usually - there is more to that story. Its can be a sign of liver issue - these are common problems in TCM and healing can be achieved.

I get this on and off during the night if I sleep on either side. But I have found that if I sleep on my side without applying pressure to my ear, it doesn't happen. I use a memory foam neck pillow over my regular pillow so it supports my cheek and my head behind my ear, and the ear is just sort of suspended over the other pillow and not in contact with it. It seems to help a lot. It usually comes on when I'm having sinus issues so mine may be some kind of blockage and vacuum formation. It does feel better when I gently pull on the outer ear, when it does happen.
