Have him see a neurologist to see if it is Trigeminal neuralgia. I had a painful exterior ear and that is what I was diagnosed with.

I'm new here (male, late middle age, average weight/height, good health except for occasional lower back pain...but not the tailbone) and glad to find I'm not alone in this strange ailment. I've had outer ear pain off and on for about five years and I too have had every doctor look at me like I have two heads when I mention the problem...they have no clue. I found years ago that a contoured memory foam pillow helps alot but recently my left ear hurts even with the pillow.

So, reading here the various things, I tried tugging the ear..didn't work for me (I pulled down holding the ear lobe..is that the way to do it ?) I tried pressure behind the ear, didn't work.

So I tried the only body lotion I had lying around "Extra strength medicated body lotion with Aloe and Vitamin E". Actually made matters a little worse at first, as it was done in the daytime when the ear was almost ok and the lotion caused my entire outer ear to have a burning sensation. Perhaps that was the "medicated" part of the lotion acting on the sensitive skin. It wasn't horrible pain really, just a bit annoying.

Anyhoo, the burning sensation faded after thirty minutes, I went to bed a few hours later and guess what.....no ear pain during the night ! One night doesn't mean I have found the silver bullet but it looks hopeful...and maybe your "pregnenalone" cream might work even better and without burning...will have to try that next. I wonder if someone needs to create an "Outer Ear Pain" forum ;-)

It is definitely a matter of pillows. It was first brought to my attention by my dermatologist. She showed me "pressure sores on my ears" from side sleeping. I now awake every few hours because my ear hurts. It is becoming a major sleep problem. I never thought to try a firm pillow, but I will. Thanks h.c.

That makes sense. I used to get pain in my left ear when I slept on it. I thought it might be from cartilage damage from an old injury when I was young. I just started a course in Reflexology, and learned that there are many points on the ear that correspond with many body parts, as well as on feet and hands. It made me think of my old ear pain, and I thought of the hard chair I used to sit in at work. When I had the ear pain, I just tried a new pillow, but at some point I took a cushion for my chair also. I never thought that might have stopped the ear pain. I have only had it once since then.

This happened to me once. I tried to book an appointment but my appointment was the next day. I HAD to atleast ease the pain. You will get antibiotics but to ease the pain do the following: 1. Take a paracetamol/ painkiller 2. Take Nurofen ( a type of medicine, search it up) 3. Take a peace of cloth and heat it up any way. But I would not wet the cloth, but you could. I put it 25 seconds in a microwave. 4. place it on your ear and just leave it there until the pain goes away.

Just got back from the dermatoligist and had the exact problem as mentioned above.  He told me that since I had to have "shoulder surgery" three months ago I've had to sleep on that side all night and it has caused this.   He has given me a shot of Cortizone and said it should go away quickly and told to try NOT to lay on this side.  The name he gave for this was "three words and very, very long"

I do not know how old this post is but it caught my attention because my left ear has been causing me a great deal of pain redness and some swelling in the Antihelix area and outer fold and the outer edge. It was so excruciating it wakes me up. It lasts day and night. Now you also mentioned gall bladder problems. I have gall stones. I had this once before and then I had taken some antibiotics and my gall had calmed down and my sinus had gotten better. So I think there must be a correlation there. I am having both these problems again. My doctor also gave me some acupressure in the ear to help as well. Have you come up with any more in

I have had this pain for several years and sometimes using Arnica gel helps. Usually I get the pain at night, but today I have had it since early morning about 7 hours ago.

Yess there is!!
Although most doctors will prescribe you painkillers to numb the pain, or suggest surgery...there is an Ayurvedic herbal pill called Niargim that helps rebuild the covering around your trigeminal nerve. Essentially it is the exposed nerve that causes sensitization and subsequent pain. Accupuncture has also been proven to be an effective remedy.

Hey, this may be the answer to my outer ear hurting when I lie in bed. I have been having bad sciatica pain for a couple weeks and this ear problem came about shortly after that. It's not as bad during the day and neither is my sciatic pain after I get moving about more and limbering up. How interesting!
